update: dxdiag is fine => pagefile in dxdiag refers to committed ram. (I assume it counts the GPU)

if you look at the resource monitor it does work out -- close enough (see what i found out)

Hardware Reserved => reserved for use by the BIOS and some drivers for other peripherals.
In Use => used by process working sets, drivers, nonpaged pools, and operating system functions.
Modified => Memory whose contents must be to disk before it can be used for another purpose.
Standby => Memory that contains cached data and code that is not actively in use.
Free => Memory that does not contain any valuable data and that will be used first when processes or the operating system needs more memory.

I will try the fans at a manual setting of 100%.

can bioware please fix the "very high" mode on DX11. "high" mode is running smoothly whereas "very high" is lagging horribly and has missing textures at the starting battle

SPECS:
Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU T6500 @ 2.10GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650
512MB VRAM
Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit
Signature Edition of DA2

PROBLEM:
I click "Play" from the DA2 launcher and it crashes instantly, saying "Dragon age 2 has stopped working." I have tried virtually every solution in these forums to get this fixed. "Checking online for a solution to the problem" just does nothing. I tried running it in compatibility mode for XP SP2, running it as administrator, reinstalled DA2 three times, ran it with DX9, NOTHING works. It STILL crashes. I have already submitted a report on the main page's technical support.

Im having the same issue here, I got mine from steam and i figured it was a intergrity issue but it's not all the files are validated - so i deleted the game and dl it again and im having the same issue, i checked if it was my dx-11 and so beeeee it, it was

come on Bioware test games b4 u release them, and please don't say OMG could be a driver issue like Apple was with there crappy iphone 4 bumber "quick fix"

eD1s0n, if you check fps with fraps, you will see that high mode is not right either.
Some fps from my system:
1920x1080, 8x AA, 16x AF no aa/af
dx9 medium: 102 fps
d11 low: 108 fps 137 fps
dx11 medium: 90 fps 112 fps
dx 11 high + ssao: 30 fps 35 fps
dx11 very high + everything: 17 fps 25 fps
aa 8x + af 16x drops ~15% and coming from miduim to high drops insane 300%.

DA2 Max settings but with AS/AA turned off and with the hi res textures enabled

Outside of the city the ground loosed textures (blacked out) and during battles the game nearly becomes a slide show. In the city the game is sluggish, but no texture issues.

I play this res & settings on other games, Rift, SC2, DA:O, CoD4, L4D1/2 and no other game has this issue, this is issolated solely to DragonAge 2.

Guys/Gals if your video card is NOT DX11 capable you're NOT going to get DX11.... regardless of the game. AND as I noted - DX11 is hardware based in the video cards...... it has to be built in!

You're correct, but there's some confusion for Dragon Age 2.
There are two options for this game: DX9 and DX11. However DX11 mode also works for DX10 cards, but is limited to High settings in this case.

So, the topic name is confusing: are we discussing "DX11 cards" (Very High mode only) or "DX11 renderer" (High and Very High modes)?
I, personally, think that it is about the latter, so it is applicable to older cards that only support DX10.

Yeah I can understand that. Just want to make sure people with DX9 or 10 cards know the game won't run in DX11. Doesn't mean you can't use the hi-res textures, just means you can't use them in all their glory.....

Note: In order to enable the "Very High" setting you will need a video card that supports DX11 and the latest drivers.

Anyway my experience thus far is I do notice slight stuttering at the highest setings using the texture pack in DX11 mode. I also get the occaisional tearing from time to time even with v-sync on. I'll have to give the new ATI Catalyst 10.4 preview drivers a try later to see if performance improves.

Same as everyone else. Really annoying stuttering every second or so. Stuttering gets worse when panning the camera around the screen. Frame rates maxed out on 1920x1200 are in the 10's in DX11 mode. With advanced DX11 features off, aa 2x, af 2x, I get 40. This just isn't right. Why must everything AAA title from EA include performance issues. You guys have enough money and followers to release the game when its done RIGHT!

Wow!

Okay loading the Nvidia Beta drivers did the trick.

Everything high, everything on and at 1600x900 and it's running smooth as silk even in outdoor fights. I bumped it up to 1920x1080 to see and it was only slightly jittery. I'm downloading the high res texture pack now and will report on how my system handles it.

I can play on high settings at 70 fps when i up to very high it drops me down to 7fps and the game is not playable. also, when using high res texture pack the entire games goes rainbow colors and does not stop until i control alt delete to exit the game. Do not have this problem in crisis on max res or any other game.

Thanks, Shpydar. I was waiting on your followup to see if that worked. I see the same Beta on the Nvidia website, but haven't downloaded it yet. If it seems to work that well, I guess I'll give it a shot.

Double Wow

Okay the system is still running smooth as silk at 1600x900 for me., only slightly stuttery for me at 1920x1080 (staying with 1600x900) The new texture pack is amazing.

If you are running an Nvidia video card get the new beta driver. It fixed all the screen tears, jittery, and frame rate issues I was having. My specs and link to Nvidia driver page are found in above post.

Running DX11 with the GeForce/ION Driver v267.24 BETA Drivers Clean install

I run with everything maxed out at 1920x1200.

The only problem I have is during combat I get some odd Shadow glyphing on the left side of my screen. It also did this on the demo. I can actually make out bodies swinging swords which is kind of cool. Its just a blob of blackness when casting spells though, which is most of the time.

First off what driver number is it if its 267.24 or 267.31 those are old news and only fix the black texture problem. Word is nvidia will be releasing some new beta supposedly next week that actually improves the performance. Realize that the very high setting activates the tessellation via dx11 in game that is whats causing the crazy slowdowns on peoples systems. I run to 580s in sli and average somewhere in the 50 fps with everything maxed out minus AA which is at x2.
Hopefully bioware and the card manufactures get on the phone and fix this sh.. as its pretty retarted its running this badly, but i will say i love the game and it looks awesome way better looking than DAO.

A lot of folks here (myself included) can run the game great on high settings with high res textures, and most of the other goodies turned on but can't run it in very high setting. Solution? run the thing in high settings and enjoy the game. Why on God's green Earth does anyone need very high to work? Just the "principle" of the thing? lol!

Plus, some of the complaints here are probably not actually real problems at all. They are simply bound by their hardware. Very high maxed out settings isn't going to run very well on many systems anyway,.

I think the main issue here is that it runs great on "high" but the bottom drops out on "very high". Like from 50+ fps down to 5 fps. There shouldn't be such a significant drop, IMO. This seems to be the most reported problem. And I'm pretty sure Bioware is aware of this issue and is working on it.

Now the extreme problems that are getting reported probably have their root cause on the user end. Like game crashing every 5 minutes no matter what the settings are, and things like that. And "this other game runs just fine" is no argument either. Different games bring out different problems.

What makes you think that? I have a high-end computer, and have been gaming since the early 70s, before there even was an internet. I'm using the exact same system I used to play DA:O, which I ran on full-tilt-boogie with no problems at all. You think I can't tell when there's a software problem as opposed to some issue with my set-up?

I spent over an hour last night with tech support live-chat, and THEY couldn't diagnose or fix the problem, referring it to "higher level". From whom I haven't heard back, btw.

Further, I'm on hold right now with the phone line tech support, in queue, and that line for this game just keeps getting longer and longer. When I called in, 10 minutes ago, the estimated hold time was 12 minutes. It's now up to over 20 minutes. You think that many people don't know how to run their computers?

Please. This is a seriously buggy release, at least for PC on DVD. Plain and simple.

Catalyst 11.4 Beta fixed my crashing issue. The game works now on any setting. The only problem is the frame rate. Maxed out(with Hi res on) I get an idle 24fps. Lowering AA and AF to 4 and 2 brings it up to a jumpy 30fps. It drops down to the teens when the action starts.

If I uncheck shadows, blur and depth, it goes up to a jumpy 54-60 fps. It's definitely playable now, just wish I could get a steady framerate.

I have tried the direct x 11 drivers for ati and I am still getting the cursor being off to the left and bottom of the screen to scroll down the menu.
I have tried running the three aspect ratios that it allows, and even on normal screen I still get it where my mouse is off kilter.
Also, I did try different screen resolutions to see if I could use it to centre the mouse, still to no avail.

Other than that, It now allows me to use direct x 9 option in very high mode. I would still prefer to be using dirext x 11.
Mind you the newest drivers have made the rest of my computer pretty.

The 267.26 nVidia drivers somehow work better than the 267.24, despite the difference claimed to be only the support of 5XX series cards in the 26th. To install it on lower model cards, edit the INF file to include the [Manufacturer] section from the 24th version instead of the one it originally has. Seems to have eliminated the in-dialogue slowdowns for me entirely (I'd say it's about 30-ish FPS, more than enough for me), and cut down the in-combat slowdowns to small jitters -- running 1920x1200 at High with the high-res textures. As a reminder, my video card is a GeForce GTS 250.
