As for Bethany, I thought it very funny, in that her first appearance is just ridiculously huge (the only woman I know built like that had surgery to 'reduce' due to a bad back) but I thought that was Varrick's exaggeration, since she's pretty normal throughout the rest of the story.
I was, it must be said, wildly annoyed to have the old lady mage gowns, while Bethany gets to trot around in Cute Wench attire. Could we have NO pretty dresses? Geez!
