Speaking fom a statistical standpoint axes have the best of all worlds: Good attack speed, good damage, good armour penetration, full strength bonus. Other weapons sacrifce one or two of these citeria to be better in others, which makes them less well rounded.
And backstabbing looks ridiculous with an axe - may as well use a cheesegrater...

The Pen. Well, it's mightier than the sword at least.

That's on my desk at work.
Also have a bass, catfish and walleye for dual-wielding.

After all, you can cut down the tallest tree in the forest with a herring.
But only after you get the shrubbery...

The toolset.
Seriously, Im partial to daggers, once you fix the dex bugs. A dex-fixed dual-wielding dex/cun rogue with the str>cun talent can be absolutely lethal, with the right weapons and "Enchantment!", I havent seen anyone come within a mile of that single target DPS.

Dual wielding daggers with 5 paralyze runes (total) and crit on disabled targets talent = win.

So multiple paralyze runes on one weapon increase the chance? Really? That's very interesting...

Axes successfully...combine the weaknesses of swords (poor armor penetration) and maces (less damage). So yeah, I absolutely agree. Not.

Or the strengths as in "Not so poor AP/DMG".
Also don't forget the 1.1 strength modif.
On a high str. build that easily (at least) makes up for the diffenrence in base dmg to a sword, leaving you with higher AP too...
