Ok... I've been putting this off because I have an affinity for the Dalish and had high hopes for their story line in DA2, but I have to rant.

I couldn't believe how stupid Merrill is.  The mirror, OMG... if my Mahariel ever finds her and sees that sitting in her shack, she would go all Elgar'nan on her.  But even beyond that, her wide-eyed innocence put me off rather than charming me.  I do have a low tolerance for cutesy characters, but the fact that she would not know that a mugging is bad, that's worse of a Dalish stereotype than Velanna and her terrorist act.  The Dalish can't be that stupid and have survived.  Like they don't know what bandits are??

I'm still processing the conclusion of Merrill's story.  I know I'm supposed to find it emotionally wrenching and I did, but it's like I can't believe the entire Mahariel/ Marethari clan is wiped out over a misunderstanding revolving around Merrill.  That is just... too much.  I think I'll have to replay it again and maybe try to romance Merrill eventually to see if it makes more sense to me than it did the first time.

End rant.  Image IPB

The clan was never wiped out in my playthrough. Does this even happen? Marethari gives her life for Merrill out of love. Merrill was attempting to do what she thought was best for her clan. She was also performing her actions out of love for the clan. It really was a tragic story.

Yeah I'm inclined to agree with you. Also the clan for the most part was sort of a clean slate to me... same goes for Merrill especially. The clan was basically paranoid of outsiders as is typical for most of them, while Merrill was separated from most people while she studied magic and history.

You know, for some parts I thought she was just ignorant due to being so shelteredd and other times.... I could have sworn it was sarcasm (such as the muggings being exciting).

Half the time I don't even know.

Not necessarily of outsiders, but humans. Given their history, its not really paranoia so much as healthy suspicion.

This is what I believed as well actually.

In this sense she really is like Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. She acts all oblivious and naive sometimes, but then you have to wonder if that's all just sarcasm, or a show. Part of the fun of her character is you really DONT know.

*SPOILER ALERT*

Varric said Isabella stayed w/me at the end, even though I fully romanced Merrill. I had the post-quest dialogue before the quest, and supported her fully. Even chose the peaceful option to get out of the cave w/o slaughtering some Dalish douches. Why would Isabella stay w/ me and not Merrill? Is it because I had a little *ahem* distraction with Isabella first, even though I turned her down afterwards?

Def a bug. With my surround sound turned up fairly loud on my first playthrough (360), you could hear Varric say Merrill and Isabella at the same darn time. "Isabella" was much louder though, so I would assume most people don't hear Merrill, or maybe it only works that way on the 360.

Or do you?
Nah, but really she was my favorite character all throughout the game. The convo's w/ her and Varric killed me. :o

Indeed Keeper Marethari goes out like a boss. Merrill's background story is extremely tragic, I was actually surprised that it wasn't addressed more during her companion/romance dialogue and/or quests. Being exiled from all that you know and losing a motherly figure like the Keeper in the manner in which Marethari died would be extremely traumitizing, I imagine. Especially if you chose the wrong dialogue option and had to wipe out the clan, dirty business man.

Oh I didn't realize that you could keep the clan from attacking you.  In my pt they all attacked me, and I'm sitting there casting fireballs at Hahren Paivel just wanting to bawl.  But afterward I thought... no.  That didn't just happen.  I keep thinking of my poor Mahariel off doing her Warden thing, when she gets that news.

I don't know that character, and I did wonder if her innocence was an act, but what does that say about her?  So she's either completely dippy or manipulative?

I would say neither. She simply is who she is. Maybe a little weird in a good way.

Major bummer: I got her as a friend asap, romanced and then I didn't help her with the mirror. Guess what happens? The dialogue so far afterwards suggests that I did help her with the mirror (didn't give her the tool). Sure, she got mad at the Dalish camp, but when we got back to her house, nothing changed. Either it's a bug, or Bioware simply didn't anticipate this. Which means that how you go about her quests doesn't seem to matter really; only thing that matters is what type of romance/relation you go for :(

Odd from what I've seen there should be a conversation where she tells you that she never wants to see you again. Followed by the love scene when you go back to your estate at night.

Yes, but it seems to be based on friendship/rivalry, not quests.

I'll post my question here, i couldn't find a answer anywhere, i just hope it'll be answered before i start the game up again. ^^

As many here know her act 3 quest is bugged for most players.

I just really wanted to know how her quest actually activate. A new path i think it is named.
Do you also have to go to her house for this to start?
I was just wondering if you could avoid the conclusion until you have the actual quest activated and completed.

I think, this is just speculation, if you avoid her house until the quest itself is triggered then you should be able to avoid the bug. I could be wrong, but do not think I am.

Due to the bug the way you end up triggering her quests seem to need to be. Talk to her at the estate if your romancing her, talk to her at her home see the end of quest line, talk to her again. Do the quest for Meredith, then do a new path. Which will let you complete the romance near the end of the game

Can you still keep the full romance if you take responsibility for her ? (to avoid killing the elf hippies)

She's such a ditz and a juvenile, but that's why I gotta love her. It reminds of unbridled, idyllic youth, facing the harshness of reality ; a coming of age if you will. Thanks for the quick reply.

Can anyone clear out for me what happens to the Mirror on the friendship path?

I've played through 2 times now but it leaves the state of the mirror confused.

On the Rival part. The destroys the mirror herself. but on friendship path it just disappears after a conversation.

Anyone?
