I was not expecting Merrill to be so full of adorable. I was actually expecting her to be kinda boring based on descriptions and her short story. Interacting with Merrill was pretty crazy though, because even though I'm a mage lover I definitly don't condone blood magic so I ended up being rivals with her.
Why must she be SO cute, but SO stupid at the same time?

I found a pretty interesting tidbit, though I'm not sure the parallels were intentional. When Merrill asks you to strike her down if she's possess, Hawke's reluctance to do so mirrors her own reluctance to do the same to the Keeper later. Probably makes her think about what a terrible thing she asked you to do.

Man, I just did her quest with the pride demon at Sundermount. I feel really, really awful for her. I figured there would be some way to make the Dalish accept her again, but.. damn. When we finished off the first group of elves after killing the demon and she started losing it, I reloaded and took the peaceful conversation route. Reeeeally did not want to traumatize her any more by having her slaughter her entire clan, even if it's in self defense.

But I'm still not sure if that was the right decision. What did you people do there?

Quite tragic.

I assumed responsibility for the Keepr's death and they let us go. She's still heartbroken though. Very sad.

At the start of my "valiant hero" run, I was of the mind to romance Aveline (I didn't know at the time she couldn't be in a romance). But the moment Merrill came on the scene... love at first sight. It really helped when Aveline had another suitor come in the picture; it took the pressure of not leaving the Fereldan widow alone off the shoulders.

As for Isabela, she's was gifted with a great body! But... I just can't imagine taking her to have brunch with "mom" at the estate on a lazy Sunday morning. KnowhatImean?

Merrill all the way.

Certainly not the wrong place for that kind of question, but Im a bit confused as to the problem. You have the gift but whenever you talk to her the quest wont trigger/dialogue wont trigger wherein you give it to her? I think in Act 2 you have to do the other dialogues first before that one triggers at the end. Have you completed all of her other companion dialogues/quests for Act 2?

Also, you can only give gifts by starting a dialogue when in a companion's house. You don't do it from the inventory system anymore.

I may be wrong but if he's having the same trouble as me, I gave her the gift and it raised her rivalry instead of friendship. Is there a dialogue route that raises friendship instead?

There should be, just stick to 1 or 2 (the upper two of the options) and it shouldnt be a problem. I have no idea how people can generate rivalry from gifts.

I just started act 2 and tried to give it to her there on the mountain. I'm used to the other system in the first game. I think I have done one of her dialogues. it was the first thing i did when i started act 2.

Weird after I finished off the first group she didn't even say anything to me. Then after we slaughterd her whole clan in self defense she was pretty cool with it.

I have to say Merrill has to be one of my favorite LI's in any Bioware game.

It wasn't an interactive conversation, just situational dialog that companions tend to say as you run around the world. Once we'd killed the first group she said something like "Please let this be a nightmare, I'll wake up and everything will be fine" and sounded like she was about to break down.

It'd be easy to miss if you went down the mountain immediately.

Is she a masochist or something? I mean, it's driving me nuts, i'm trying to raise my friendship, trying to be nice, and what she SAYS in game sounds like she appreciates it, but then i get +10, +15 rivalry every time.  It's kind of annoying, i think i'm screwed for romance in this playthrough, since i didn't read any spoilers and whatnot, and tried to go with Aveline.

Buddy of mine was having this issue with the game. I don't really understand why that would happen, the only rivalry issue I had with Merrill was taking her or not taking her into the fade. Which was odd.

Damn Tricsun, thats a pretty harsh playthrough. You could always try loading up from a previous save (I don't know how deep in you are). Still at least you get to enjoy Merrill hilarious dialogue.

I love that Merrill is a sweet, adorable, naive, darling little Dalish elf who is also incredibly dangerous, does blood magic, deals with demons, and can wipe out her whole tribe with bullheaded decisions.

She's a flip.

Unfortunately i'm about 26 hours in, so no chance of that.  I don't get it though, i even just recently gave her a gift, she told me a story about it, thanked me for it, and after that, +15 rivalry.

You could always just go full rival with her. I did full rival and it was amazing. My favorite relationship in the game so far. You don't have to be mean or anything, just disagree completely about her resorting to demons. My Hawke was just trying to protect her, and she saw that in the end. Also, I had Fenris and Anders with me during her final quest with the keeper, and their dialogue was perfect. That whole scene was really powerful.

Is it still as good if you go full rival just as a companion, not a romance? My mage-supporting snarky Lady Hawke is going to try rivalmancing Fenris this time around, but wants to be Merrill's big sister.

How did she 'see' that in the end, in the sense you were referring too.

So, having gone through the dialogue and romance I asked her to move in and she agreed. When does she actually move in? Done several things since then and she is still living in her shack.

Also after asking her to move in I went to The hanged man and when Isabella confronted me about my relationship with Merrill I chose the Jealous? (You're the only girl for me dialogue) option. I have had relations with both girls. That doesn't cause Merrill to hate me or anything does it?

Ahh so it does force a confrontation!

I think youll take a friendship at the very least Warp, as you would in DA:O when you were forced to choose. As to how it will work out, I'm entirely unsure.
