Is there a reason this thing is about 18 times harder than anything else in the game so far? It takes barely any damage and is immune to all of my cc.

Good thing you added CCC bioware considering it doesn't work on any of the difficult mobs.

I can barely get this thing down 1/3 of its health before my health poultices run dry and my squad is flattened. If anyone has any tips (other than "turn down the difficulty") I'd love to hear them.

Personally, I'm waiting for the "killallhostiles" cheat. That stupid thing is way more difficult then it needs to be.

I'd also like to know how to take down this thing. Heals are on huge cooldowns, limited on how many potions we can take and this thing just wont take any damage. plus it goes after my healer half the time for some reason.

Really it comes down to the thing being too stupid to focus your rogues. If it attacks your rogues you will die, if your rogues can manage to not draw it's attention it will die from what I've found.

1. Hide behind pillars when it is charging up in the middle. (Click H or the hold position button at the bottom left of your interface to prevent your characters from wandering off. This will greatly reduce the amount of healing that your mage needs to do.

2. Get all your characters out of the way when it turns into a rock and rolls towards them. Make sure your range party members are always standing far away and away from each other.

3. It is best to have a warrior with taunt to protect your rogues and mages. Lightning resistance and physical resistance helps a lot. Always killl off the adds first. I didn't AOE them down since I have 2 archers dealing lots of damage to each of them.

Good luck!

Had to switch to easy to beat it. Still fairly tricky, though.

Fantastic Boss fight.

Took me 2 tries (on normal) with Warrior Hawke, Bethany (mostly elemental, but with heal and its upgrade) Avaline (tank) and of course, Verrick. First time Beth went down too early, and she's my main source of DPS. I've found the trick is not to be stingy with mana/stamina potions, and just pop them as soon as you're low, rather than worrying about regenerating. First time, I didn't drink potions enough, and my dps dropped to practically nothing, then Beth and Verrick got taken out, and my two warriors didn't have enough firepower or healing potions to kill him before he downed me. This was my first total party kill in the game.

Second time around, I chugged stamina and mana potions and focused on burning him down as fast as possible (remember to hit him when he's in the middle without his shell and the adds are summoned) I used Hawke, who's got the best gear and best single-target sustained dps with just regular attacks, to just wail on him, while the rest kept the adds busy. Repeated that 3 or so times, while obviously hiding behind pillars when appropriate, and I was able to bring him down with no losses on my side. Probably used 4 or 5 healing potions, 6 stamina potions, and 3 mana potions. It helps to manually control all of your characters. Whenever he's stopped moving, switch to your mages and archer rogues and dump all of your aoe/dots on him like Tempest, firestorm, etc. Even though they'e meant for multiple targets, every little bit you can put on him counts.

Definitely a fun boss fight though, really required some effort.

DW rogue and used "toss the gauntlet" so i could kite it. had varric, merrill and isabela do crowd control when the rock wraith was "broken" in the middle of the stage. you could manually heal w/ potions or set up a tactic for potions. not too bad... and i'm REALLY glad i didn't bring my sibling w/ me

This, also he does another ability that looks almost the same, but its like a magnet(Kocks you down and pulls you in). If one of your party members gets sucked into melee range, say goodnight!

Also the warrior spamming taunt is a must, as he will 2-3 shot a rogue or mage.

Only played this on normal difficulty, but essentially you use the pillars to your advantage. If it's in that mode where he's charging and then spewing those sparkly needles, you need to hide behind the pillars. When it's rolling around you can actually kite it around the pillar while the rest of your party beats away on him.

Honestly it kinda felt like I was playing WoW for a moment there with the boss, it was definitely one of the more creative and fun bosses of DA so far.

How to take Ancient Rock Wraith down on Nightmare:

Hawke: 2-handed, must have Taunt and upgraded Stonewall
Bethany: must have Firestorm or Tempest
Varric: must have Hail of Arrow and upgraded Fatiquing Fog
Ander: must have upgraded Heal, upgraded Haste, upgraded Heroic Aura, Pancrea, and Aid Group.
Consumable: 4~6 Health pot, 4~6 Stamina pot, 2~4 Lyrium pot

Ancient Rock Wraith has a few attack type:

Basic attack:
1. swings his arm horizontally, hits an arc infront of him, quite wide, low damage
2. Shoot out lightning like regular Rock Wraith, low damage but fast attack speed
3. transform and hit in all direction, mid damage
4. swings his arm downward in a forward straight line, mid damage
5. transform and kicks out with his feet in a forward straight line, high damage

Special attack:
1. Teleport to the middle of the stage, goes nuclear and shoot out red light for a few seconds, summons a group of 8 Rock Wraith around him.
2. Turns into a ball and rolls forward doing damage and knocks down on the way
3. Transform and causes a black hole on top of him, sucks nearby enemies in in a 15m circle.

So basically, have your range DPS together within range of Ander's Pancrea aura, move them at least 20m away from the boss and ideally near a pillar. Have your Hawke engage the Ancient Rock Wraith and repeat an attack pattern of one attack, strafe left or right, one attack, strafe, rinse and repeat. Use your Taunt and Shieldwall whenever they're availible if Ander's heal is on cooldown, otherwise try to do as much damage as possible while dodging the most damaging attack from the Ancient Rock Wraith.

When the boss telepoert to the middle of the screen and starts charging up, put all your characters behind a pillar and wait it out, as soon as it's over, have Ander activate Haste, make Beth use Firestorm and Varric throws a Fatiquing Fog on your team (with the upgrade that gives 100% obscure chance) and then use Hail of Arrow on the 8 Rock Wraith adds that shows up. Once the crazy AOE ends, run your Hawke up to attack the Ancient Rock Wraith. Once Varric and Beth clear what's left of the  adds, focus your whole team on the boss until he transform back to humanoid form.

When it turns into a ball and rolls, follow it with Hawke and make sure your range DPS ball gets out of its way and runs 20m away from it. If your range DPS ball stand near a pillar, the Ancient Rock Wraith will usually hit the pillar and stops, use that as a guide to judge how far you must run. When it use Blackhole, just keep attacking and use Aid Group after it finishes. Repeat this proccess until it dies.

This thing decimated me on hard. In fact I am not going to go to easy and finish it off. I tried a bunch of times.

I even somehow got it to randomly glitch and all my party members resurrected. But the glitch stopped working when he was about 90% down and then he wiped my party.

I mean I carry some resistance gear but this boss fight is something totally out of the blue HARD.

And I cannot go back to camp or anything to prepare. I have to go through him. I really did not want to turn down the difficulty but its the only way. I got about 5 health pots and 8 lyrium. I dont have a chance...

Ah well, amazing game so far. Gorgeous !!!

Just finished it on hard.
It took over an hour. Similar to my first time fighting the High Dragon in origins.
Maybe on my next play through (Nightmare) I'll be better prepared.
But Naitaka is correct; Stonewall (upgraded), and the other stuff is a must.

I feel this is the first boss fight that requires any sort of tactics beyond just tank and spank. It's nice to see a boss that requires actual player skill beyond creating intelligent character builds and passable tactics settings. Having just completed the game this afternoon, I will say this is my second favorite boss fight (save the last one against: *spoilers*

Meredith, since i sided with the mages.

I played this on hard and boy was there a difficult spike here compared to the other bosses. I didn't find the dragons to be that hard, but this guy provided a challenge. I had to constantly pause the game and carefully maneuver my characters out of harms way. Its HP was going down REALLY slow. By the time its HP was half way down, I was praying to myself not to screw up, cause I really didn't want to start over again. I think it took me like 30 minutes to finally beat him.

I appreciate the challenge though, since I thought the game up to that point was a little easy even though I was playing on hard. Might need to kick it up to nightmare =P

The Rock Wraith was the only enemy I've had a lot of trouble with for the most part, although, knowing Dragon Age and its difficulty spikes there will be more to come I'm sure. :P

Is it SUPPOSED to be immune to all flanking attacks? My ranged rogue hawke does absolutely no damage whatsoever if it isn't facing her. Even my 100% crit assassinate skill misses. I've tried this fight about 6 times now, and the one time it looked like I'd actually win (all 4 allies still alive and he was at 25%) the game froze on me... I don't really want to lower the difficulty, but this is just stupid. I can't pull hate off my healer or varric because every time they pull hate they get pushed into a corner and none of my attacks do any damage.

What gives?

So I still can't beat this on hard... BUT thanks to this massively difficult fight I came across kind of an awesome bug on PC: Anders will still Aid Group even though Panacea is not activated - it only works via tactics, it's still impossible to manually click it on. Not sure if it makes a difference but i have Self: Any - Activate panacea turned off in the tactics menu. It's possible this is what is tricking the game into thinking it's cool.

From what I can tell, taking out this dude's health is all about class combos - as in that's the only way you're going to get a significant amount of damage. Sadly the only debuff I can manage is disorient and crushing prison is the only ability I have that can take advantage of it. Heh.

Yeah this boss seems ridiculously hard. I'm playing on hard and up until now I've had very little trouble and then just out of nowhere this guy shows up.  I'm not really prepared either. All I have is six health potions and normal heal. Looks like I'll have to turn down the difficulty to normal and plan for this guy the next playthrough.

This was indeed a brutal fight and it took me 3 times to realize what was REALLY killing me. The Rock energy blast nuclear blast was one and the WRATHS or whatever they were that spawn after the Nuclear Blast....shooting that electricity at me and my characters. THAT Electricity killed us like every single time til I realized they had little health and were easy to take down with my mage. Once you realize that the rest is cake....CAKE OR DEATH!
