Ancient Rock Wraith

I also don't see the point in having any special attacks against the boss itself. Mark of Death - couldn't tell the difference. Assassinate... Hardly any damage. Just one long fight running around and telling party members three hundred times to stand behind the bloody pillars.
All in all it felt exactly like playing WoW again. You tell people to stand behind a pillar and they go "oh well, what's the worst that can happen". SPLAT.
Could be an epic boss fight if I didn't have micromanagement issues and if autoattack wasn't 95% of my damage. Maybe I'll figure it out the next time around.

My general guidelines for the the boss:
- Get behind pillars when he charges up and hold (use Bolster here if you have it or clump up on a Panacea/Healer mage). You see energy lines pulsating towards his center and he's clumped in a ball.
- Focus down the Profanes he spawns after then DPS the boss before he comes back together.
- Once he's back together, he'll transform in a Shield + Flail form. I just had my Warrior Hawke running in and out doing the dash attack to avoid unnecessary damage. Aveline tanked through it while Varric and Anders DPS'd.
- When he turns into a ball, figure out who he's targetting and move anyone out of it's path. You only have to move just out of it to dodge it, so you can keep DPSing as he passes.
- You can outrange the gravity pull ability. If you can't, just clump everyone up on your Mage/Ander while in Healer mode.
That's pretty much it. It's a long fight, but hardly hard. Just avoid the damage and DPS when it's safe.
I will say having Bolster for Aveline REALLY helped here in retrospect. I was able to get her to max Stamina basically every LoS AoE, so she could Stonewall and/or Taunt freely.

I beat it on hard. It took me a few tries, but 45 minutes total from beginning to end of the successful attempt. That's not easy even if you did it on your first try. Here are 3 things I did that I didn't read in this thread:
- Laser show phase - Hide your entire party behind the same pillar. Clear left and right post-laser as the spawns are... spawning... aggro rest and dedicate ranged dps to boss. If they attack anyone else you're wasting the opportunity.
- Rolling boulder phase. The goal is to get the wraith to roll into a wall or pillar that's closest to him so he rolls in place. If you can't get him into a wall, stand your tank in front of him to slow him down so your melee dps can go to town and your ranged isn't interrupted running out of the way.
- Panacea bug I mentioned in an earlier post. The mage will still cast group heal even though panacea is not on so long as group aid or whatever the damn thing is called it is set in your tactics.

My solution there was to have them prioritize weaker enemies, then they will finish off the profane while you're tank can whack away at the wraith to maintain enmity.
Also in my experience the stand your ground command only works so long as hawke stays within a certain radius, a radius that happens to be smaller than "ranged attack skill" radius. meaning that if your team is 20m away on one side, and hawke is 20m away on the other side, your team will move to be closer to hawke...
which if you are trying to park them behind a pillar will mean they move out of safety. it's much safer to just have them free to move, I have yet to see my group not run behind the pillar if I don't as well. Of course if you have aveline sporting her immovable toggle, you may need to click it off for her to get to safety in time.
My biggest obstacle throughout this fight though was that the wraith seems totally immune to all attacks from the flank, If he wasn't being attacked head on when in humanoid form my attacks wouldn't land, even the attacks that aren't supposed to miss. playing through the fight with no tank, meant I had to keep close tabs on everyone, and keep them moving so no one ever got cornered. yet needed everyone close to the front of the mob to keep whittling him down.

It isn't difficult, it is annoying. Huge difference. You have to constantly micromanage your party via pausing and positioning them like children. I haven't beaten this yet, and I'm playing on hard. I have Hawke as a warrior, tank spec'd, with taunt etc. Yet taunts seemingly do nothing against the random roll attack stuns.
I can only do so much with positioning my party, they simply can't be out of the way 100% of the time. They get rolled over, stunned, then the golem gets up and 1-shots my healer and mage.
What a stupid fight, seriously.
There has been nothing, absolutely NOTHING even remotely similar prior to this boss. They just throw you into this mess of a battle, and boy is it an irritating chore. As if I have to even consider moving difficulty down for this.
Honestly, I don't want to do this. I do not want to micromanage my party's exceptionally poor-AI for up to an Entire Hour.

Basically, I used Hawke to hold aggro and soak up damage, while summoning the Dog every time I had the chance - it would fight til it died, and then when the timer was back, I would resummon it. I kept my party on hold position - my mages and archer were positioned out of the way, but where they could still shoot the wraith. Every time the wraith would move around, I would reposition anyone who needed to get out of the way. Heal spells and potions to keep everyone alive. Long and exhausting, but it was good.

How to take Ancient Rock Wraith down on Nightmare:
Hawke: 2-handed, must have Taunt and upgraded Stonewall
Bethany: must have Firestorm or Tempest
Varric: must have Hail of Arrow and upgraded Fatiquing Fog
Ander: must have upgraded Heal, upgraded Haste, upgraded Heroic Aura, Pancrea, and Aid Group.
Consumable: 4~6 Health pot, 4~6 Stamina pot, 2~4 Lyrium pot
Nice, so in other words they had no idea what they were doing when they made this boss, and have no concept of balance. Needing a very specific setup is horrible. The difficulty of this creature is about thirty times that of anything up before it, including any of the dragons.

Around 60% Aveline and Varric died so Merrill and I had to kite him to oblivion. Took me like 30/45 minutes and every health/mana potion I had (around 9), but we made it in the end.
Made me love Merrill even more.

People are used to "tank and spank" encounters, and personally I'm happy that these require some sort of strategy.
Anyway, some tips:
Keep any DPS and healers away from the front, he has a cleave.
Try to keep him facing the middle, so none gets cornered, especially when the roll move comes around.
When he becomes invincible and goes to the middle, get behind the pillars to avoid damage. Then take advantage of that extra time to do some free DPS (once you kill the adds).
Other than that, be smart and don't get cornered and manage DPS.

I disabled movement, placed the mages and the dwarf ranged attacker with some distance in between them so the wraith could only attack one party member at once and repositioned when the wraith started his rolling attack, i used carver to take out the little guys that spawn when you temperairy take him down.

It's all well and good for people to talk about strategy when they already have the optimal set up for this fight. But there really is no effective strategy if you don't. I went into this fight with bethany, anders and varric, with myself as a range specced rogue. I spent more time fight with the literally retarded ally AI than with the wraith himself.
Indeed. I went in with rogue hawke, isabella, varric (who is for most intents and purposes a mage) and aveline. I -barely- survived on casual.

It took me about 10 tries, but once I started to use my mele DPS sparingly and kept the ranged characters safe, the rock wraith became managable, albiet very tough.
