Many years of MMO experience caused me to 1-shot this fight on hard. It was painfully obvious what the pillars were for. And ranging him. It was a VERY long fight. Add to the fact that you basically have to position him to face your party every time he moves so their attacks actually hit and you have one odd fight for this game.

Same MMO raiding meant easy 1 shot, though on normal   But i did enjoy the fight and hope i come across more similar awareness battles. Just started act2.

Be aware and react when he changes phases.

I felt this encounter was a tad ridiculous for the game it was in. If this was in a game like WoW where each of the characters was controlled by an intelligent player, then fair enough, but according to the designers normal difficulty was meant to be of a difficulty where "you only worry about playing Hawke efficiently." Well, I can tell you, on my first try when I did that all other characters besided me and Aveline my tank died rather quickly.

In addition, it's completely melee unfriendly. Any melee, no matter where positioned, will always get slammed by its close-range AE attack (where it expands) and it does about 50% of Isabela's HP in a single blow. Unless you have 50 potions on you or something I simply can't heal anyone except for my tank due to the lengthy cooldown on the healing spell in this game, which means she will inevitably die because she's too much of a mana sponge.

I did do it eventually but I found it a rather infuriating fight. In a different game it could've been rather cool due to the phase transitioning, typical of a raid boss in MMOs, but basic AI controlled characters simply don't suffice in an encounter such as this making it annoying. Also, this fight would've been 10x easier if I'd taken a second mage along, once again making the game significantly easier when you have 2 mages in your party (the same issue DA:O had).

Even the XP it gave seemed out of place. The huge spider before it gave 1700, the dragon gave 1800, and then this thing gave 10810...:? - not that I'm complaining but it felt like an FF optional boss encounter (like the Weapons) insanely difficult but the rewards completely out of whack.

In all my years of gaming, this is the longest and hardest fight I've ever had with a boss, in any game.

I'm playing a Mage on Hard difficulty, I brought Carver (stupid, stupid me...), I have one Mana Potion, but I have Makers Sigh (Respec Potion) and have a spec in Force Mage, but the majority of my ability points are in Fire's section of Elemental.

I get it's health nearly to half, but then Anders gets butchered.

At first, I kept dying to it because I didn't build my characters well. This caused me to reload a save before I left to the Deep Roads and respec my party.

I play on Hard, and I beat on the 2nd try after optimizing my party.

I have to commend Bioware on this encounter. Much more dynamic and engaging than most bosses in DA:O. Reminded me a little of the mechanics of the various bosses in games like WoW, where team work is a must.

I hope we find more bosses like this!

I finally pulled it off on insanity as well as a two handed warrior. I had Anders, Merril, and Varrick in my party.

What was giving me trouble at first was I thought I had to dodge the big swings. I was losing too much dps plus the range on the attacks is huge and could never get out of range unless I didn't melee at all. I also seemed to take more damage, I am guessing it is because the strikes were hitting my back.

I have to echo my biggest frustration was the AI. I had a hell of a time with party members getting stuck and not moving or when I was meleeing running right up to my Hawke to shot the thing.

One thing that helped me is I saved haste for when it was in the vulnerable state. Allowed me to squeeze in some extra dps.

I thought it was easy O.o jsut set everyone to stay staionary when he charges his aoe attacks and hide behind the pillars, and when hes on the ground use your aoe spells/abilities for the lesser wraiths, keep your mages and rogues in the fire of the aoe tho so they can be protected jsut in case. and when he gets up just rines and repeat til hes dead. did this with minimal heals

Difficulty: Normal

My team
Hawke (sword and board warrior)
Merril
Varrec
Anders/Fenris (I played it a couple times because it was so damn fun lol, and with Bethany but thats for another foum)

Fenris got decimated my first few tries. Bloody thing hit him for 192 at one point. Luckily I brought some Maker's Sighs, so he's now got upgraded Stonewall and as many other damage mitigation talents I could squeeze in.

Got Varric (ofc), Anders, DW rogue Hawke besides. May need to go back 25 minutes or so before I dumped my last good bow and turn Hawke into an archer.

Would the people who use "It was easy" and "Difficulty: Normal" read the thread title again.
It's pretty sure that it is easy on normal.

The only difference between Nightmare and Normal for this fight is, that it takes way longer to finish on Nightmare, but it is by no way harder.

If you know how to dodge all of his abilities, you'll need close to no healing at all.
After that it's just how much damage you do to make the fight shorter.

How to easily beat the fight:
1) Put each of your characters behind a different pillar.
2) Control the character he's charging/attacking and hide behind the pillar.
3) Run around in a circle with all characters, from pillar to pillar. That way you have enough room to dodge and no character gets hit.
4) If he teleports to another pillar, do the same as 2 and 3.
5-a) If he teleports in the middle, hide behind pillars. This will happen 3 times in the fight.
5-B) After he finished channeling, kill the adds. They should be 2-3 hits.
6) If he begins to cast is pull-in AoE, hide behind pillars.

Killed him after 7 attempts in Nightmare. Fight took me 40 mins. Reminded me of a WoW raid boss. Lucky I raid alot back in Vanilla WoW, so I get used to this sort of fights better.

Just did this on nitemare with the following setup (this is my first playthru):

Hawke - 2H DPS warrior 1:1 Str/Con
Varric - Range DPS 1:1 Dex/Cun
Anders - DPS/Backupheal 1:1 Magic/Wiz
Merril - Spirit/Entropy DPS 2:1 Magic/Wiz

Had some trouble the first time learning the mechanism, the second time I died due to me paying bad attention to my positioning. Whats most important is that know where the dmg comes from and just avoid it. It is also important to remember here is that this boss in no way need to be tanked. Once you realize that he is fairly easy. I'll try to list what I learned:

* The first phase just burn him down, keep squishy cloth users out of his melee cleave and force him into the next phase. I managed to get him into the middle with only 1 teleport.
* When he stands in the middle and explodes, spread out and hide behind pillars during that phase. Try not to hide all the chars behind the same pillar, if you spread out the party over the room you will be able to kill off the adds faster and get more time for the next phase. Then fast as hell burn down the adds when they spawn.
* When the adds are down, pop haste and blow all DPS cooldowns on him until he is mobile again.
Remember to keep max range on him ALL the time until he have decided what char is he is gonna roll/walk for. Just use that characther to kite him. Stand still on max distance until you see the animation that he starts to morph into a ball. When you see that animation, run as far as you can from your current position while the rest of the party just burns him down. It is perfectly safe for melee chars to DPS him from behind/side when he is rolling. For a Warrior/Rogue this makes sense since you just run around and wait for all your CD's when he is targeting you, and when some range finally manage to aggro you run in and blow up all CD's you have. Ppl keep stating that this is a range fite and I only give them partly right. Clever played melee-chars will be able to deal ALOT of dmg here as well. Make sure not to have ppl in melee range when he stops rolling tho. This is NOT true for the last 50% or so when he starts doing that "pull everything to him" move. Then its pretty harmless for a melee to just charge in and go balls-to-the-walls with his or her dps on him. The dmg you take is neglectable.

Then the fite just turns to a rince repeat pattern, avoid his rolling, kite with the current threat holder while the rest DPS. Hide behind pillars, burn down adds.

Note: I have only played on nitemare and have no idea how you do it on other diffuculties.
I guess you can pretty much cheese alot of the moving in less diffuculties.

I beat this fight first try on hard.

Here was my party:

Hawke - AOE specced (Force tree, elemental) , heal
Aveline - Tank specced ,
Anders - Pancea specced healing mage , barrier
Varric - Ranged DPS

Picking the right party composition is key for this fight. If you can, having 3 ranged characters in your party will help a lot by avoiding cleave damage and the vacuum attack.

Also having a properly specced Tank is vital. I noticed a lot of people saying they are having trouble, but their party's tank is a 2h warrior. Having Aveline dedicated to Tanking talents made really easy to keep up heals. Use stonewall & Barrier (mage cast) whenever the cooldown is up. These abilities allow time for heal / potion cooldowns to run out, while the tank is safe from damage.
Important tanking talents to have:
  • Lvl 2 Stonewall  - Putting 2 points into this gives your Tank an inuvlnerability mode on a 10s cooldown timer.
  • Immoveable (Aveline Only) - Really helps her stay alive
  • Turn the Blade - sustained tanking bonuses
  • Shield Defense - sustained tankin bonuses
  • All the passive tanking talents

Another key is having multiple heals availble. Between potions, two single heals from my mages, and AOE heal from Anders I had 4 potential heals on my tank. If my ranged took damage I could always run them to Anders to gain HP regen. Use your heals smartly! Don't waste a heal on your ranged dps when they can use potions. You will likely need all your heals for the tank.

Tactics:

Vacuum
Keep your ranged at range to avoid the vacuum. I actually didn't know about the pillars when I beat this, but that would have made things much easier. But using stonewall during the vacuum helps keep your tank up until your healers can get back into position.

Ball Attack
When he does the ball thingy, see what direction he is going to roll and move your characters out of the way. I never had trouble with Avaline taking too much damage from the roll, so I just kept her on the boss, but you can have her dodge too.

Vanish
When he vanishes, get ready re-position all your characters and send your tank back on the boss. This is a good time for your to use taunt. If you're having aggro problems when he uses this ability, have your ranged members restrain from attacking until your Tank gets in a few hits.

Minions
Burn these guys down as fast as you can while using effective crowd control. You have a limited amount of time before the boss comes back up, but you should be able to kill most of them before he does. They don't take much to kill them, but they are all ranged (correct me if I'm wrong).
He summon minions at 75%, 50%, & 25% for me, but I would need others to confirm as well. The boss used a vacuum and becomes unable to be attacked right before the minions come. Try to move your ranged characters away from the center, and keep your tank on the boss. The minions spawn all over the room, so its likely that some will be right on top of your guys. Have your ranged characters stick together and systematically take the adds out. Be smart with AOE spells and crowd control. Your tank should suck up about half the guys if you get your taunt right and have the rest of your part on the edge of the room. Kill the minions on the tank last.

Its a really tough fight, I've played a bunch of MMOs so I felt right at home. But you'll have to pause the game alot to heal at the precise moment. I hope this helps some of you who are struggling atm. Unfortunately I don't think you can respecc or change your party in the deeproads so if you are having a lot of trouble with this fight, it may be wise to load an old save and start the deeproads over again.

I'll try to record and upload a video in the next few days.

I last did this fight with Me (Elemental mage), Varric, Isabelle, and Merril, so no healers at all. It's annoying but it's mostly just about positioning and spending 30 minutes wearing him down. Like so many others have said it's all about positioning. The only time I used 'hold position' is during the 'lazer light show' phase, other than that I just let people roam, mostly because the boss was on my **** like glue. I am pretty sure I lost everyone and ended up kiting him down but in nightmare, you lose people a lot. Especially since I hate Anders, will never use him, and don't like to play healers ;)

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh............

So aside from having the perfect party for this situation, how do people propose you beat it with one dual weapon rogue Hawke, Bethany, Anders and one USELESS Varrick? Also, I'm playing on hard and refure to turn it down.

It seems to cleave me a mile off, even from behind the pillars, dealing on average 100 damage, sad face.

Managed to take it down first time on Normal with my Hawke(2 handed warrior), Aveline(Tank), Anders(Pancea Healer) and Varric(Ranged DPS).

Just have Aveline take as much damage as possible and had Varric do as much damage to it as possible. When the mine-rock wraiths were summoned, I had Hawke take them out as quickly as possible.

EDIT: One thing that helps: Health Potions!!!! Have at least 20 with you!

Tried to take this guy on with no healers and ten health potions, could never get him past half health. My mage is usually my main source of dps but was primal so I barely dented the thing. Luckily I had a black emporium respec potion on me and switched my mage over to a spirit healer to keep Aveline, Carver, and Varric alive. This fight still took around 30 minutes or more. Fantastic fight just absolutely fantastic. It had the mechanics of an mmo boss fight with hiding from area effects and avoiding aggro. I would love more of this.

Well beings you have two rogues, two mages, and no tank your going to have one hell of a time. This is the only point in the game so far that I've noticed you truly need a tank for. Goodluck. Also I get some good use out of Varric how do you find him useless?

Meh, I'm just not a fan, never liked Dwarves anyway, also I think maybe because he's manditory at this part, I never would have chosen him with my party lineup.
I managed to get it down to 2/3 just by positioning  Bethany, Anders and Varric together and shooting while my Hawke runs around like a headless chicken, but that didn't last for long. The beast decided it would change its ball rolling course and corner my three companions and pummel them to death. Sigh.

Is anyone else bored with the consistent number of enemies you have to face and how each encounter comes in waves of three? I find it so loborious and predictable, suprised Bioware didn't spawn another one of those rock things after you've defeated the first one ... bloody action RPGs.

I do tend to get sick of the three waves deal. A better idea for you that I would recommend is spreading out your 3 ranged party members so that when he starts his rock roll you can quickly pause switch characters and get whoever hes headed for out of the way.

This was a refreshing sight to see a boss that actually had you think, though with my years of MMO raiding it was fairly obvious to me what you had to do. Beating him on Nightmare was a pain considering I had no idea I was going to be walking into this guy and my team builds were far from ideal.

Killing this guy and the High Dragon have been my two favorite moments so far, and I look forward to stomping this guy next time with a better build.

I may just do that, that and lower the difficulty to Casual, don't see this encounter as one worthy of spending my time on, it's a write off. Do the Deep Roads last for very long? I want to be rid of Varric as soon as possible ...

I managed to beat him on hard with relatively little trouble, but there was one aspect of the fight that kept messing with me: the energy blast you need to avoid by hiding behind the pillars. That should have been the easiest of his attacks to dodge, and doing so was quite easy to set up, but my ranged allies (i.e. everyone but Hawke) would blatantly ignore my hold position order and run back into the attack. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm guessing there's some non-obvious reason in my tactics setup that caused this (ranged behaviour, maybe?), but hold position seems like a fairly basic order that should override everything else: don't do anything unless you can do it from where you are right now.
