System:

Vista 64-bit sp2
4Gig ram
HD5870 (catalyst version 10.8)

I keep freezing and crashing when escaping lothering(always before or at when you meet avaline)

Do I need to update my display driver? Really dont want to if I dont have too.

I have the same problem after doing the first job for Meeran to get into Kirkwall, during the cutscene upon entering the city. Had it once before but it didn't reappear after rebooting, but now i can't finish the cutscene, the game always freezes/crashes at different points.

Vista 64-bit sp2
4 GB RAM
HD 5850 (Catalyst version 10.6)

It still happens at different parts of the game... Sometimes while starting it, when i'm trying to enter the black emporium, at cutscenes...

Unfortunately, Dragon Age II was made with the most recent display drivers in mind and as such there are a lot of issues with older drivers in some cases. I strongly recommend getting the most recent ones.

You forgot to mention that Nvidia graphic cards users should refrain from playing, since you developed the game with AMD...

Thanks for the answer Luke but i already have the newest drivers and the problem actually got worse when i installed the newest catalyst-version and i've never gotten past the opening Bioware-credits yet.

But i've seen that this problem has already been discussed here recently. Could you or anyone give me a link to the solution or a short summary what to do? The "Known Issues and Drivers"-thread already has 62 pages...

Thanks!

Hopefully this will not anger him but I suggest PM'ing 'Gorath Alpha', he is a community member that knows a GREAT deal more than I do about all things video card related and can likely give you a hand or point you to a decent resource for your issue.

his name implies overclocked hardware... if that is so, then I can guess were the problems come from...

Yeah, i think my hardware was delivered with a certain amount of overclocking. I've already heard that that might be a problem.

I think it's the drivers though: I finally managed to start the game last night, but i had to turn the Graphics down to DX9 and also turned down the resolution and details. So i'm finally able to play the game now but this can't be a permanent solution. I don't think Bioware can do much about it though and ATIs driver-policy just sucks.

But thanks for your help so far guys! Do you think is should still PM Gorath Alpha, Luke, or is the current status probably the best i will get?

I don't know what Gorath Alpha can say about this error, but if I might make a suggestion: Try underclocking your card with the Catalyst Control Panel to the "regular" settings of the gfx chip, you can find those on wikipedia for instance.
Then try using it again with the DX11 Renderer of the game.
If that helps, then you know that even with factory overclocking your card is not as stable as it should be (Factory-overclocked chips are painstakingly tested for this, but sometimes "bad" chips slip the net).

So you think it might still be a technical issue with my card and not a driver problem?

I've asked quite a few people now and heard both answers pretty often: "ATIs driver policy sucks", "install newest driver", "install older drivers", "your card/chip is malfunctioning, exchange it (ironically, this was what AMD told me^^)", "turn settings down to DX9" (which seems to work) and now "try underclocking your card to the regular settings of the chip" (your suggestion). I must say i'm pretty overhelmed by the complexity of the problem.
I'm happy with how the game works at the moment but i might still try your method. But if underclocking solves the problem, does it really mean that there is something wrong with the chip? It might still just mean that the game has problems with overclocked cards, something i've ready around here as well.

Again, thanks a lot for your help so far!

Just in case some of you want to know: I finished the game on DX9 now. After patch 1.02 came out i tried it again on DX11. At least i could start the game now and even play for a bit, but it still kept crashing and i could barely play for more than 10 minutes, so i turned it back to DX9. Definitely some strange driver issue. The problem was there on 1.00, worsened with 1.01 and now is abour back to irs 1.00 status with 1.02...
