I went into DA2 thinking that I would build my character as a tank.  Turns out, no matter what I do, he will never be as good a tank as Aveline since only she has access to the Guardian talent tree.  Right?  Am I missing something here?  I really hope so because it doesnt make sense that companions can be better in their roles than the main character because they have access to a talent tree not available to the player.

Um, I half-way agree and half-way disagree with this. I like characters that have talents that mean something. Their specific trees lock them into a role for the most part, making them masters of their own trade, whereas the PC can be a master of whatever you feel like (but still be a jack of all trades for the most part).

Honestly though, I don't like sword and board for nightmare... you just don't do enough damage to justify the extra health, you'd survive easier with a 2h warrior going all out mobs imo.

Well, honestly tanking on nightmare is all about burst damage and using Stonewall at the right time for that 100% damage reduction. As long as you get that combo down, it really doesn't matter what skill you have beside that.

I like the new extra talent trees that are character specific. In Origins, everyone could only pick from the same specializations...so really if a character already had a specialization ( like Oghren being a beserker) and you were playing as a beserking 2 handed warrior too then...your really no different from Oghren. Now, not only do they have a different specialization but you have a few totally different choices as well.

Hate on it if you want, the old way basically made it so you were a slightly stronger version of everybody. Now you are actually a different character that has his/her own specializations that give you different benefits over everyone else...uniqueness, which was forgotten about in DA:O that it seems nobody else noticed.

Think you might be missing the point of compainon - specific (and the playable character specific) talents/specializations.

This was meant to be an essence of uniqueness in the game that was missing from Origins, and yet nobody else seems to have noticed. Think about it, in Origins everyone got the same talents and the same skills due to their class. Now, not only does every companion get a different specialization to make them different and special and all that nice stuff...but so do you. You are no longer just a stronger version of a group of characters (e.g. if you made a 2 handed beserker...you'd basically turn out to be another Oghren just with a few more stat points and a few more abilities if you bought the tomes).

So what if Aveline has got a few nice perks to be a 'better' tank? You can still tank if you want to. I am with my 2 handed warrior...sort of...hell I haven't used her with either him or my assassin rogue that I got. Just ignore her existance if it makes you feel better. The point was uniqueness, and I'm happy that it changed.
