So after realizing that your companions act exactly like yours did in mass effect 2 (visual wise), will there be alternate costumes/colors for your party members after you complete their origin background? do they even have an origin background like in mass effect 2? hopefully there will be!

I think they get upgraded armor and weapon when they get to higher levels

There are upgrades to your companions armor. However I do not know if these are just stat upgrades or visual upgrades/changes as well.

In the screenshots at leas Aveline and Carver can be seen in different armors so I think there will be some visual changes too. Although I don't know if the different armor appearences are connected to the level of the character. More likely it will depend on the current plot of the game or something.

Armor visually changes through stages of the game. Upgrades alter stats.

Merrill's armor changed when I romanced her, I don't know if I completed a certain percentage of her background or it was the romance itself but it changed.

I wondered about this because you can't buy armor for your companions. Everything is restricted to Hawke, male or female. It seems to me that companions need upgrades too, for more defense.

You can find upgrades for your companions at different armor shops through out the game under the "others" tab (at least I think that's what it's call) it looks like a gem and it's positioned just to the left of the junk icon.
