Thanks to Jam 442 for this fix:

The best fix i have found so far is to the following..

1. Download Riva Tuner (do google search..its free)
2. Click on Customize, Low Level System Settings
3. Lower Core clock 50 points       example: 800 down to 750
4. Lower Memory Clock 50-70 points.    example: 1170 down to 1095

Has worked flawlessly for me. Though i'm not sure if its totally safe. Can't imagine it doing any harm to underclock.

You may have to experiment with the settings. Should be around 10 to 15 percent underclock.

Edit: And yes, it works for both Nvidia and ATI

I have the same problem with the ATI HD 3870. My monitor acts like there is no signal almost as soon as the game tries to load the outside world. I can sometimes hear the background sounds but there is no way to get the display back.

- The game played fine through the mage section, up until it went outside.

- The game played fine through one of the other beginnings, up until I had control to move around.

I have almost the exact same specs:

Windows 7 32-bit

Dual Core 3Ghz

4GB Ram

Two ATI HD 3870 (Tried in crossfire mode and normal mode)

Bump - this appears to be happening across the board to a lot of ATI users as far as I can tell from other posters.

I really hope there will be an official word / fix soon - it currently renders the game unplayable which is really not very good at all!

I am told that underclocking your GPU (or minimalising the graphics) should provide a temporary fix for the time being, as apparently the game makes your GPU think it is overheating (when it's not) and spazzes out!

What version drivers are you using? You may need a different one. I'm using CAT 9.9 which I hear is buggy, but i'm having no problems. I don't have that card but my point is try different drivers. The newest may or may not work for you.

With Vista and older CAT drivers I would get black screen when ever it came out of sleep mode. With CAT 9.9 it doesn't happen for me, and i'm not saying it's the same thing, just try different drivers you may get lucky.

Ok, I'll give that a try - not entirely sure which drivers am currently using, but I believe they were fairly up to date (since I updated them a few weeks ago when I installed Win 7.

I have contacted EA with no word yet. (about 10 days)from what i have seen it looks like a driver issue and possibly a conflict with nvidia's phisx software on ati graphics cards.

I have also opened a support ticket with ATI about 2 days ago with no word. If I hear anything i will post on the forum .

the game has been unplayable since day one for me :(, I have tried every driver from 9.7 to 9.10 with no luck.

I think I have the same issue with Win7 64bit and the gForce 8800GTS. So maybe it is a game-problem, not one of the graphics card?

Ok i didnt fully read through everyones posts. BUT i noticed two big problems with two posts. Two of you said you had windows7 32bit system but you have 4gb of ram. You need 64bit to use the full 4gb of ram.

As for me, I learned that there seems to be a problem with the 64bit Windows (Vista or 7) and the 8800-generation of gForce cards. I cannot tell about the ATI cards, but there's no help in sight for me...

Its not only on ATI cards, i have an Nvidia 8800 GTS. I've tried like 20 different things with no decent results. I'm currently upgrading to windows 7 (just because i was gonna do it anyway), hopefully that for some reason it magically fixes it haha. My roommate also has the game for pc and his is working flawlessly...so idk.

I've just underclocked my card (3870 Radeon) and I'm about to go test if it works better now.

Edit: Now an hour later I've been playing on a new Dalish Elf and it works perfectly. Before I couldn't even play 2 minutes on a elf or dwarf.

32-bit versus 64-bit is irrelevant.

You cannot address all 4GB of the RAM, but you can see more than 3GB on most systems.  It's kind of silly to try to put in exactly ~3.5 GB of physical RAM in a system.  Eventually, a 64-bit OS might be used, in which case you'll get the full 4GB.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people act like it's a big deal.  We know that we can't access all 4GB.  We just don't care.  (I upgraded from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Win7, and I'm starting to worry about that decision, based on some compatibility issues.  It's probably just DAO, though...)

Well it didn't help. I updated my drivers and it made it worse I get the black screen and need to hard boot a lot more than before. So far no word back from support. Perhaps us ATI people are s.o.l? I may break down and buy the 360 version because I can't justify buying a new video card.

I tried reinstalling and that didn't work.

I have this issue as well.

Windows 7 64bit

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750

4 GB Ram

Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX 191.07 Drivers

It really freaked me out the last time because after the hard reboot, the video card wouldn't work, screen just stayed black when Windows was reloading. I had to let it rest for a little while, then it worked again. I'm trying the beta 195.55 drivers now.

I'll have to try to remember to come back and update my post later if the new drivers help.

Very strange, I JUST got this problem now as well - after having played for 25+ hours or so.

Was there some kind of "ninja" update to something so that this would happen?

I did not change one single thing since I played for 10+ hours yesterday, now I get this pretty much right away (I'm in the dwarven tunnels thingy).

It can be solved to running in windowed mode but I really don't like that.

Windows 7 64bit
Intel i920 CPU
12 GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce GTX285 191.07 Drivers

*SIGH* running in windowed mode apparently doesn't work either.

Now I can't play, this is the second time since at first the game wouldn't start at all which I solved by buying win7 and doing a fresh install (I still havent heard from EA about that yet).

I'm seriously VERY unhappy about this.
