Very strange, I JUST got this problem now as well - after having played for 25+ hours or so.

Was there some kind of "ninja" update to something so that this would happen?

I did not change one single thing since I played for 10+ hours yesterday, now I get this pretty much right away (I'm in the dwarven tunnels thingy).

It can be solved to running in windowed mode but I really don't like that.

Windows 7 64bit
Intel i920 CPU
12 GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce GTX285 191.07 Drivers

*SIGH* running in windowed mode apparently doesn't work either.

Now I can't play, this is the second time since at first the game wouldn't start at all which I solved by buying win7 and doing a fresh install (I still havent heard from EA about that yet).

I'm seriously VERY unhappy about this.

This happened to me first after playing nearly 20 hours. After that it seems to happen more often. I get this crash as a dwarf when you seek the bloods and papers in the wilds. Other than the dwarf problem, the black screen crashes are random.

I guess I'm lucky that L4D2 came out so I have something else to play. I ruffs my goat seeing the TV and inter net ADs. I want to play this game so bad.

Well.....   I've decided to stop playing the game for awhile.

Its pretty obvious that Dragon Age still needs some major work done to it and was released in a pretty buggy state.  I don't think I've played a game in the last several years that has consistently locked up a PC and put it in an unrecoverable state.  Hate to say it, but I don't particularly care for my PC locking up to a black screen with the occasion stuttering music playing in the background that requires a hard reset to get running again and the deletion and reinstallation of network devices everytime after reboot.

I'm also surprised that all of the folks that lauded and reviewed the game didn't seem to encounter any problems.  I was looking forward for Bioware's other game (Mass Effect 2), but after this I might just wait for it to show up in the bargin bins before trying it out.

Anyway, it was fun between the crashes.  Hopefully it will be more fun when(if) it's fixed.  Back to Modern Warfare 2

Yeah I guess I need to dust off my 360 and spend more money on the same game. As for mass effect 2 I have my main save on the 360 version so I will play it on my 360.

Also the black screen thing is evil in that it will quite possibly ruin settings in programs you run in the background - I know at least I get logged off from the forum and it forgets my password.

UPDATE:

Can't be 100% sure yet but it seems as if my GPU fan was being blocked by a molex-connector so it didn't actually run, hope that is the solution to my problems. If it is the problem is simple GPU overheating.

I posted this in another thread but might as well post it here:

I am having the same problem with the same video card(ATI HD 3870). I have a duel
boot vista32 and xp64 pc and have installed it on both drives. I can
play a new character, but right after I load an old save my monitor
goes blank and goes to sleep. I try to turn the monitor on and off and
it tells me there is no input signal.

Trouble Shooting steps i've taken:

Changed game and monitor resolution.
Tried on 2 different OSs on 2 different hds.
Uplugged one hard drive to give the PSU more available power.
Updated drivers.
Tried multiple monitors.

Ok, well after my most recent hard boot from this game I had to replace my hard-drive. I'm a glutton for punishment so I installed Dragon Age and I thought it worked....sadly I was mistaken. Since I had to get a new hard drive I wont be getting the 360 version of Dragon Age. Still nothing back from support.

Either they are flooded with this or they don't care? I want to play this game so badly. ^Bump

The best fix i have found so far is to the following..

1. Download Riva Tuner (do google search..its free)
2. Click on Customize, Low Level System Settings
3. Lower Core clock 50 points       example: 800 down to 750
4. Lower Memory Clock 50-70 points.    example: 1170 down to 1095

Has worked flawlessly for me. Though i'm not sure if its totally safe. Can't imagine it doing any harm to underclock.

You may have to experiment with the settings. Should be around 10 to 15 percent underclock.

Edit: And yes, it works for both Nvidia and ATI

Perfect, Jam442!

I've given this a try myself and so far it seems to be an ok fix. Though underclocking every time I want to play this game is awkward, it's not too much hassle.

I'll keep you posted with any problems I encounter.

CPU is still maxed at 100% which is annoying, though!

Has been about 2-3 hours now and I have just completed the Warden's Keep quest line without a single crash to black screen using the underclocking method above.

It would appear that the game makes yuor GPU think it is overheating. THat's why it crashes out each time.

This fix has worked flawlessly for me. (apart from a very slight decrease in graphics detail which I can live with! )

I have this issue as well.
Windows 7 64bit
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
4 GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX 191.07 Drivers

It really freaked me out the last time because after the hard reboot, the video card wouldn't work, screen just stayed black when Windows was reloading. I had to let it rest for a little while, then it worked again. I'm trying the beta 195.55 drivers now.

I'll have to try to remember to come back and update my post later if the new drivers help.

Just wanted to update everyone and let them know that the 195.55 drivers did not solve the problem.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to underclock my video card. I have too many other games to play, I'm just going to go play something else, come back in a month or two, and hope that Bioware has finally fixed the issue.

Have "fun" guys.

I can confirm the fix has worked for me as well. I'm a few hours in and extremely happy.

Yeah I back dated my display drivers and used Riva Tuner again. So far so good. I would feel better if bioware patched the game so we don't need Riva Tuner, but at least I can play.

Glad to hear it helped some people. Helped me get out of Ostagar and into the next town.

Odd thing happened though.

I loaded my game, which i saved in Lothering, but i had forgotten to underclock the gpu as usuall. The game was running fine again without riva tuner.

Hopefully it was just a Ostagar problem, but time will tell.

Ohh and for A7las. As long as you don't apply the settings at startup (it's a tick box) then the setting will go back to normal when you reboot. You can also just tell Riva to go back to default without a reboot.

Originally the Riva Tuner solution worked for a couple of hours but now it's back to the random freezes and crashes. I'm running an ATI HD 4800, by the way. I turned down the resolution and texture quality but still to no avail.

Does this crash seem to happen more often during cut scenes or dialog, by the way?

Same ****n' here!!! I got so pissed off, that I had to hard reset my PC about 10 times now. It has never happened to me before. I can play every other game with no problems, but DAO is just trying to kill my hardware. I want official answer whether I can get a refund or not, gonna ask D2D UK about that. It's £30, and I could have spent that on another game, that wouldn't want to **** on my PC. I don't get it, even if a game crashes, it does that in civilised manner, without the need to do hard reset. I'm so disappointed with BioWare.

Been running my game in 4:3 aspect, even though i have a 16:9 monitor.

Still looks fine to me. Can't be sure if that is helping or not, but it seems too.

I've got the black screen of death consistently when trying to leave the starting castle at the end of the human noble beginning. It's 100% reproducible and the underclocking mentioned above does nothing.

Sounds like something more serious. I never had a problem with anything until i got to Ostagar and saved my game. After that it would crash 10 seconds after loading the save.

I'm going to send an email to Valve/Steam soon just so I have it recorded with them and if this isn't fixed with/by the next ATI driver update I'm going to get a refund.

well, since running my ATI 5770 slightly underclocked, AND setting the fan manually on the card to at least 80% has resulted in zero crashes.

if i try to overclock, run the fan on auto settings, or run the fan less than 80% max i will get a black screen.

definitely seems to be an issue of overheating the graphics gpu for me.

must be a driver issue not allowing for appropriate fan increase.

hope this helps!
