So, I've managed to get the game to display again by waiting long enough and then hitting escape a bunch bringing up dialogue. Going through that I then was at Otagor camp and the game was visible again.
I hope this won't happen all the time or else it's going to get real annoying real fast. Wait, more annoying as I've already wasted more than enough time on this problem.

Jesus.. first take a vallium or something.. secondly BW was bought by EA which has hurt BW... turn your anger to EA as they have one of THE worst customer and tech support out there....
and if you have to underclock cards to play an intensive game.. especially when it's from the same manufacturer, the cards are probably overheating and came factory overclocked. Don't blame a game for pushing the limits of hw.. if you have to underclock a card by 50Mhz BIG DEAL.. that's what? like a 1% performance loss? WHO CARES?! if that makes the game work fine.. then go with it!

Tall, please calm down. If a game is causing a card to overheat while nothing else is then it's the games fault, but that's not the case here. It's happened in the past though. Here it is clearly a different issue as if it was overheating and a 25 mhz drop, which is more than 1%, fixed the problem opening the case will lower the temperature much more. So if underclocking your card fixes the problem, but increasing the airflow doesn't, it's not the temperature.

Interesting.... I have kept the settings and played for DAYS! without any issues at all. To me if it's not broke, don't fix it. So the Riva thing worked for me and I will just keep the settings till I finish the game.
I even forgot about this post I have played for many many hrs and days as it's been a holiday. I a, very disappointed I had to do so much work to get it to work right. This issue made me put this game on pause till I found a solution as total system crashes like this are not good for an OS at all. I hope everyone finds a good working solution. Some might have to upgrade there cards though. I dunno. It's not ATI as Nvidia cards are having problems as well.

Here is my unfortunate solution. Originally I had random black screen crashes and had to force a reboot to recover. Even underclocking reduced, but didn't eliminate the crashes (increasing the average time between crashes from 30 minutes to maybe and hour and a half).
I finally fixed it by 1) Underclocking 2) Turning down settings 3) opening the side of my case and 4) OPENING MY WINDOW in Wisconsin with the snow outside and dropping my room's temperature to low 50's. It sucks, but I'm a Wisconsin boy so it's ok. At least I get to play now, and it shouldn't have come to this.
P.S. yes, I tried all the fixes in the order I listed them. It was the window and a Wisconsin December that finally made the difference.

I had this problem in Mass Effect 2. I used the RivaTuner suggestion, never crashed again. Was able to complete the whole game on max settings, just turned down the clock. Didn't seem to effect game play at all. Was very happy, didn't have to buy a new pc/vid card.
