I am half-way through Act I and I want to romance her already. She meets my expectations so far.
Absolutely adorable, I agree with that!
She surpasses Tali in my books already.

She's more likable than I thought she would be.

The weird look of the elves aside, Merril is a cheap attempt at mimicking the success of Tali. Tali was awkward, but not so annoyingly so as Merril. "What's that? ME nerds loved Tali? Well lets create a character that out Tali's Tali." Seriously, I got tired of her "stop mumbling Merril" comment.
And the VA may be Welsh, but I couldn't stop thinking of the Dalish as leprechauns.

I found her to be eerie and even creepy. Totaly agree with Fenris who kept telling her that she was a monster during her Mirror quest.

I don't like her. I find the trying too hard kid archetype irritating (cough, mission vao, cough) On top of that, I don't like her very much in gameplay either. I think you really need to micromanage her to be any good. To further confuse things, she's a mage who heals/damages enemies in close proximity. Why would you have enemies in close proximity if you're not screwing up pretty badly. Also, she has no heals, which I think is essential for a mage (even though they nerfed healing from DA:O) I used bethany (pretty much pure elemental with a dash of healing) and switched to Anders once I lost her (primal, spirit, healing, and his unique tree which is... more healing) If you're smart about your tactics, he's a death machine at high levels, and can also keep your party fighting fit. Just bring lots of lyrium potions, because he gets thirsty.

She reminds me of Liara's inexperience with other people. Settled with her, considering the alternative was a backstabbing ****.

All the elves look bad in this game(compared to DAO elves).
Marethari looks nothing like she did in DAO(and the change of appearance confused the hell out of me).
As for Merrill, I refuse to use her for one reason only-
Her hands.
(Come back once you've checked)
(gives a minute to look at the hands of every other character including hawke.... .yea they are all like that)
I started with Isabella but i went with Merril in the end, i thought i would like her character at first and sometimes she is questionable at best but just couldnt help myself. It still felt a little creepy though just due to the design of elves in DA2

Merrill was cute up until that time she asked me to kill her if her precious ritual turned sour. After that, she was just a psycho who is living with me and whose romance I can't end for some reason.

Her dialogue is all pretty adorable, and her accent sounds nothing like a Scottish one. How can people hate these characters so much? I've read a couple people saying that they actually loathe the sweeter characters. Seems a little psychotic.

I was pretty "bleh" about her pre-release... She's grown on me a bit since then -- she'd had some cute/awkward/funny moments. There's some banter between her and Fenris that made me laugh.
