This page has a number of common problems and possible fixes. Worth checking out to see if maybe it can help.

If these are good suggestions, why not do a file import, and then a copy-paste, so it becomes local? Just thinking . .

Yes unfortunately the fixes there didn't help me either but did give me reason to suspect that the graphics card fan's auto detect settings were bad so I manually set them to make sure the card was a cool as possible.
I also believe now that my crashing issue is related to the brand of Nvidia card I have and not Nvidia or the drivers themselves. I only recently purchased my MSI N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC and have now learned that it has known stability issues with CTD and black screens common while running a number of applications. The apparent solution is to tweak the voltage of the card and/or to downclock (it comes factory overclocked) until it's stable. I've yet to try these things as I'm at work but I'll give it a go tonight to see if it helps.
P.S. If one can't be bothered to copy the URL into the broswer then that's their business. Besides, if the site updates with new information then a copy here would become obsolete.
However in an effort to make lives easier!
