Targeting Issues

I noticed this in the demo and I'm noticing it in the game now, too:

Sometimes it seems I become incapable of targeting anything anymore. I can't click on another companion, I can't select an enemy with the spell cursor. I can only switch to another companion via the F buttons.

Is there something I'm missing that would cause this to happen?

It only happens sporadically, and seems to resolve itself for reasons unknown. There don't appear to be any status effects at work.

edit: to make it more clear, I'll add this follow-up post to the OP, which better explains the issue--

I seem to have pinned down what's causing it. I use the right mouse button almost exclusively to change camera angles. When I click on a character's portrait and then click and hold the right mouse button to rotate the camera, it causes the portrait to remain highlighted after I move the cursor somewhere else. I need to move the cursor back over the portrait and away again to reset it.

This is very annoying, though I suppose a workaround is not to click the portraits to select, but to use the F1-F4 keys.

In case anyone else runs into the same problem, I've found that it has to do with the character's portrait being highlighted. Running the mouse over the portraits seems to fix the problem, though that can get a bit tedious if it happens frequently.

I have similar issue that occurs quite often. After some time the character just stops responding to mouse actions: I can't set a target for attack or move or anything. The workaround I found is to switch to another party member and the back to the one I want to command.

I'm having a similar problem. It didn't happen in the demo. It won't let me click on an enemy to fight or to pick up loot. I've tried AnKor85's workaround, but I am still having problems.

I'm having a similar problem and I'm at the very beginning of the tutorial where you can't switch to another character.

Neither my left or right mouse button are being recognized in game. can't click to move or get past the tutorial because I can't attack anything - even with a queued up attack, target icon remains grey when I mouse over a mob instead of turning gold.

Is one of the portraits in the bottom left corner highlighted greyish? Try moving the mouse over it and then away from it to unhighlight it. That seems to do the trick for me... tedious though it may be.

Hopefully whatever's causing this gets fixed soon.

Yes! It's very annoying, especially since I'm playing in nightmare. In fact I just quit out of the game to scour Google for a solution. For the record, this thread is the first result for the query, "Dragon Age II PC can't target." I remember encountering this bug in the demo, but at the time my mind went all "Mage One," I thought to myself, I did, "This here's just a demo, bound to be full of bugs and glitches as demos are wont to be. It's just their way. Don't you worry none. The final release'll be polished like a bright penny, it will."

I don't know why I trust my mind when it thinks in such bizarre speech patterns. Regardless, I'll try these solutions and pay close attention to by habits. I'll post the results and anything new I figure out here.

This is separate issue. I don't have a link right now, but someone here found a solution that seems to work (I don't have your problem so I can't confirm it):
"First create a shortcut for Dragonage2.exe file, which is located in
the bin_ship folder. Right click the short cut and choose properties,
in the compatibility tab check the "Disable display scaling on high DPI
settings" checkbox. hope this help."

Please, let's keep this topic about the original issue.

Good find! I can reproduce the issue in the same way as you described. Really annoying one.
Can anybody report it to the Bioware/EA support to make sure that the devs will fix it? I'm just not sure how to do it.

So, I have reported the issue (with a link to this topic) to the support. I'll post here when I get something from them.

I've noticed it seems to happen when my mouse interacts with the character portraits. That is definitely the trigger in my case. As the OP noted, when this happens, a character portrait is stuck highlighted for some reason, and this somehow interferes with targeting. Brushing the mouse back over the highlighted portrait or switching characters with the F keys fixes the problem for me too. Odd. Thank you, by the way, for the temporary fix. I very well might have stopped playing in frustration for a while without it.

Bump just to say I'm having the issue as well. I'm sure the workarounds will help but it would be nice if BW could fix this.

Having similar issues, usually only whenever I'm inside mansions or buildings within Hightown.

P.S. Thanks Will!

Thank you, Will. I'm glad you guys are looking into this so promptly. Also, to clarify, using the F keys "fixes" the problem by preventing it.

Will, thank you for filing this issue. When I noticed this in the demo, I thought it will be fixed in the game. I guess I was too optimistic :P

Right now, this is the only annoying issue I have encountered in the game.

Thanks for this information, I had the exact same problem, and never figured out what was causing it. Now when it happens I'm able to fix it, it definitely makes the game more fun when you can actually target the ones you're trying to target :) .

Same problem for me. And I've noticed it in demo... It is like this:. What happens is that suddenly I can't select targets, move with right click, AoE spells are stuck around the character that is casting it, and when I manage to survive the battle with all this problems, I can't loot, move with right click, open doors, and the cursor is behaving as though it is over one of the characters. It looks like a conversational balloon, and no matter where on the screen I click, on the left click it selects random character, and on the right it is making that character talk. Only thing that works for me is restarting the game...
