I seem to have pinned down what's causing it. I use the right mouse button almost exclusively to change camera angles. When I click on a character's portrait and then click and hold the right mouse button to rotate the camera, it causes the portrait to remain highlighted after I move the cursor somewhere else. I need to move the cursor back over the portrait and away again to reset it.

This is very annoying, though I suppose a workaround is not to click the portraits to select, but to use the F1-F4 keys.

Thanks for the  help!!  :D
This ˝solves˝ the problem, or at least makes the game playable, as I don't have to restart the game every fifteen minutes, but I realy hope that Bioware will fix this...

The issue seems to apply to anything you can highlight. If you click and hold the right mouse button while your cursor is over a talent on the quickbar, the tooltip describing the talent will remain on the screen until you move your mouse back over the talent a second time.

Ok, I have tried the solution with the "disable display scaling on high DPI settings" with my right click pointer moves .5 cm to the left every time in windowsmode, which did not solve the issue, then I tried to tick the "disable visual themes" only and that solved the problem.

For Devs:

I had absolutely no bugs or problems with a complete playthrough as 2handed Warrior.

Now, as a Mage, a few times I cannot target anything without restarting the game. During combat, my movement and AoE targeting ability stopped on main character. These problems have been confined to the Docks, Act I, so far.  I have travelled elswhere and fought elswhere with no problems, but am still in Act I with this character. (In the demo, the only time I saw this bug was when Main was Mage as well.)

Have you tried the suggestions mentioned here? Is one of the portraits a bit cloudy-looking when you lose the ability to target? Does moving the cursor over said cloudy-looking portrait clear up the targeting issue?

I'm playing two-handed warrior, and I had all those problems that I wrote about earlier.

But since I started using Filament's (thank you again :D) workaround, and switching characters with F1-F4, it seems that everything forks fine. Maybe it's because I've finished Act I...

So Gloatie, my advice is to be patient and play trough Act I, and if problem persists, wait for the 1.01 patch, it will be out soon.

Thanks for the input, fellas. (And the encouragement.) I haven't had time to test all the suggestions yet.

The details I included were not to dispute anybody's experience, but to catalog for developers.

Happy hunting!

same issues, can't target people sometimes. Only able to continue game after pressing F1-F4 to get another character to do an action. Please fix this Bioware.

I had an issue come up where I couldn't activate an object/character to talk to them, but switching characters back and forth fixed it every time. (So I went from, say Hawke to Isabela and back to Hawke, and suddenly the clicks would become responsive again). Could be related.

How did you switch characters, with the portraits? It seems to me that the issue is specifically related to the portraits being highlighted. If you switched with the F keys and that alone fixed the issue (i.e. your mouse didn't "touch" whatever was previously highlighted causing it to go back to normal), maybe the issue isn't quite what I think it is.

First off thanks for the redirect, Filament.

I have also been able to replicate this issue using the description above and now realize why during intense battles this annoying bug seems to happen more often..because i often find myself switching characters more (with left mouse on portrait) and of course holding right mouse ( or just releasing it while already pressing left mouse) to rotate camera at the same time..that is what seems to be triggering it...nice one Filament...glad to see the post, too, that Bioware is aware and looking into it.  Like one person commented..this is a frequent and really one of the only interface/interaction bugs i've noticed in the whole game so far..bugs the tar out of me though

Wasn't a problem in DA:O cause i know i played the same way/style/timing and i'm sure many of you did too with no issue...

Will, thank you for filing this issue. When I noticed this in the demo, I thought it will be fixed in the game. I guess I was too optimistic :P

Right now, this is the only annoying issue I have encountered in the game.

Me too.  Thanks to everybody for posting this info; it has made my gameplay a lot less frustrating, because Hawke was really embarrassing me in battle by not attacking while his companions were taking care of business just fine.

By holding down the left mouse button after left-clicking on a character portrait while pressing the right mouse to rotate the camera i have been able to replicate this bug almost on a loop so that's definitely the problem. That is simply why the F-keys don't trigger it and re-selecting the portrait again (making it not grayed out) "fixes" it.

Still bugged in 1.02, sadly.

You can also 'unlock' the screen again by casting a benificial spell on your party members by using their portraits. Heal and/or similar spells will work. It's how I get around it.

Yeah, I've found that you don't actually need to "unhighlight" the highlighted portrait to regain input functionality, you just need to mouse over any one of the portraits. So if Aveline's portrait is highlighted, you could mouse over Hawke's portrait and then start clicking stuff, even as Aveline's portrait remains highlighted. Still basically the same level of annoyance, though.

FYI, this still isn't fixed. Thanks, Filament, for the F1-4 suggestion (I had already figured out the other workaround).
