Yes the DLC is annoying, and yes the trailers were a turn off... but the game is still worth it.

So far DA is definitely better than anything I've played from Bioware since BG2...
As for EA, yes the marketing was ridiculous and a turn off, and yes the DLC is absolute nonsense, but you know what? Sex sells, and I have a feeling that those trailers really helped make Dragon Age a success with the more mainstream fans. I noticed that a mediocre game like Age of Conan sold insanely well during its first week or so. I can only attribute that to the over the top marketing for the game. I remember when the "Sex & Violence" trailer hit youtube for Dragon Age, kids in the comments section were pissing all over themselves saying stuff like "OMG IT IS LIKE 300!!!!!"

And if EA's marketing machine can make sure that old school RPGs like Dragon Age make a comeback, and introduce such CRPGs to a whole new generation of fans, then it is a trade off I am willing to accept.
I can put up with the DLC nonsense, and the stupid trailers, if it means that I don't have to wait another decade to play a proper CRPG. BG2 came out in what 1999? 2000? It's been too damn long.
Here's to hoping that Dragon Age is a success, and games like this come back in demand.
While I do own an Xbox 360 and a PS3, there is absolutely nothing like playing a game on a PC. Image IPB

+1 :D

It warms my heart to hear the game is selling so well. I haven't played a game so immersive and full of possibilities in a decade and I'd started to fear I never would again. I haven't geeked out on a game like this since I first discovered Final Fantasy and Baldur's Gate.

I bet this game will be one of the most pirated yet also one of the top selling games of the year.

Hopefully those who choose to play the pirated version will be so happy with the game that their conscience will dictate to them to go out and buy a legal copy to support the developers.

Or perhaps I really do live in a fantasy world.

I'd like to think anyone who pirates is does so to get a demo ... and after liking it, then go and buy.

I was pretty amazed by the advertising, too, just because of the amount of money EA was pumping into this game. TV advertising isn't cheap, and especially not on some of the programs where I've seen the ads. The DLC, as always, is a ripoff, but if enough of it was bundled into a CD, I'd buy it that way.

What really disturbs me is not the DLC itself it is the way they implemented it. There is this dude that you get to see every time you set-p camp and when you talk to him you start the quest even if you don't own the DLC and at the end of the conversation "Oh by the way you have to pay for this" that is just wrong besides being an immersion breaker it's just a cheap tactic to get to your wallet, why the F is he there if we don't own the DLC?

So you can download the DLC while still dicking around in game. I on the other downloaded all the DLC via the mainscreen of the game so Dryden became just a normal NPC asking for my help.

It's worth every penny and greatly exceeded my expectations. That's not to say it is without flaws (texture issues, enemy AI, no combat log, etc). But BioWare will most likely patch up a lot of issues, if NWN is any indication. They supported that game for years after release.

I'm looking forward for worthwhile DLC, an expansion, and a full sequel. *cracks whip at BioWare*

What about people who don't want to buy it? Should they be forced feed advertisement down their throats in a game they bought?

Yea that was crossing the line, I thought. Apparently a lot of people who have bought the DLC are just having problems with equipment disappearing too. That sucks as well.

But my point was that I am willing to put up with a little nonsense, if it means that games like Dragon Age continue to be released. Until Dragon Age, it had been years since I spent so much time hooked on a PC game.

I have been waiting for this game for years, I just didn't realise it until I decided to give it a try. The marketing campaign is a bit misleading, but I understand that it will attract more mainstream audiences to the game as well. DLCs, achievements and fancy marketing tricks are what people want to see these days I guess, and I'm pretty sure DAO wouldn't be such a big hit without these to go with it. Gaming in general is more casual now, I don't think people would've had much interest in the game if Normal was the easiest difficulty and there were no fancy cinematics to lure you into buying the game.

I was hooked on BG1 & 2 like it was crack, and DAO is doing it to me all over again. This is a brilliant game for anybody who enjoyed BG and IWD-style games, no matter what EA is painting it as. :)

I agree with the original poster, the marketing was dreadful but if it was the price that had to be paid...

DLC, XP and DA2 please, plus an Icewind Dale style game where you create your own adventurers.

Well done Bioware.

Here is to hoping that Dragon Age sells 4 or 5 million copies and results in more RPGs. Perhaps something like another Planescape Torment... or perhaps a Baldur's Gate sequel. :)
