I found it really hard so I thought I'd share.

NIGHTMARE MAGE winning tactic.

I was about to lower the difficulty.  My mage only had heal, mindblast and winter's grasp.  I had 3 heal potions (couldn't open the chest). 

The tank and the 2h warrior died after a while leaving me with a mage.

I just kited the ogre and blasted him every now and again and a good bit when it would stop for the special attack.  I would also kite in such a way as to interpose the darkspawn between me and the ogre so it would kill them when it would throw its boulder.  I would also summon Dog now and again.

The ogre killed all the darkspawn for me while I was wearing the ogre's life down.  Then the ogre just died by attrition.

Whew that took a good 40 minutes!

and if you had taken a 3rd damage spell instead of heal you would have had no problem.

40 second cooldown means I dont pick up heal.  That fight is over in 40 seconds.

I'm surprised more people aren't having trouble. But more people probably aren't on Nightmare.

Played mage nightmare on my second playthrough... so i knew what was coming.. but it wasnt that hard... warriors die right away in this fight.. but if u run around kiting its actually quite easy since the ogre is so slow..

More people aren't having trouble because kiting bosses in DA2 is so powerful.

Killing him as a warrior is probably the most *challenging* (As challenging as dodging the blows of that thing is - not at all, unless it bugs out again)

Kiting is exactly how I beat him too. Everyone wiped but my mage in first minute. Then I just ran about and took pot shots at him. He eventually killed his own minions via area of effect. I just wore him down.
