I had posted this in the general discussion, but think it got lost in the shuffle.
I have a question on how Friendship/Rivalry works when it comes to a companion's sticking-point issue vs. how they generally view the world and how they would react to smaller quest decisions. For example, Anders has his mage freedom thing, Merrill's seems to be blood magic rights, and Fenris's is "mages are so ebil!1!" But these three seem to be fairly honorable characters who like "good" decisions otherwise. How will this affect the friendship/rivalry meter in Hawke's interactions with them?
For example, if I'm playing a mage character who generally takes the high road and practices "white magic" so to speak, but believes in mage freedom, am I going to be stuck in neutral with Merrill and Fenris by gaining friendship points when making "good" decisions while questing but rivalry points when it comes to their personal issues? Or are their issues more heavily weighted?
I'm wondering if I need to take a harder line in order to push a companion all the way to end of friendship or rivalry. If anyone has any insights, please do share!

No insights but to say yes, it seems tricky. I keep getting +/- with Aveline because I do good-ish things (which she likes) but then kind of chaotic things (letting mages go, hanging out with thieves), which she dislikes.
If you game the system a bit and try to take along characters that likely have strong opinions on a quest (say, any quest that deals with mages) you might have better luck.

I get what'cha mean! I'm playing a mage who knows mages are dangerous and should be watched over (sorta like Wynne), so that's friendship with Fenris and rival with Anders. Though sometimes I end up with 5+ rival points with Fenris and I'm like, "WHAT DID I SAY WRONG?!?! D:"

I'm in the same boat. I can't keep a consistent side with Fenris or Anders. It's actually pretty hard. The only one that was pretty easy was Bethany but Anders is just difficult.

It's all so confusing! It was so much easier to make my companions (in DAO) like me. This friendship/rivalry thing is messing with my mind. lol My character was flirting with Fenris. The first encounter went well and I got friendship points. But the second encounter I got rivalry points!
Is he competing with me for himself? Darn you sexy elves!

I'm fairly consistent with Fenris as Im playing a mage that is very liberal-she just wants mages to be left alone. so getting full rivalry with him is almost too easy. Actually its almost maxed out in act 1 already. Being sarcastic instead of kind or evil also seems to net some rivalry points. Poor guy hates me
With Anders is a little more difficult as I've only just got him, but he keeps varying between friend and rival

Anders is tricky. I can't keep him in one side or the other. I have done so far 8 hours of gameplay and I'm almost done with Act 1. I'm thinking of going back in my save game, at least 4 hours back, so I can pick the right friendship path with him from the beginning.

Yes, I can't seem to understand his angle. He is very much "freedom for mages" but seems to take negative stance towards Merrils free use of blood magic. I can't figure this guy out...
Oh, and did anyone get to flirt with Isabela? Ive gone through her recruitment mission and spoke to her in the tavern, even took her to some of my quests, and never any reaction from her. Am I doing south wrong?

Yeah that's the thing with him. I went into this game supporting mages for my first play but surprisingly I'm leaning toward Templars. Anders is not helping with his conflicting views. He doesn't approve of mages using demons yet he's possessed himself proving the Templars point and want mages to be free. I mean I guess the point of rivalry is you can love someone but you don't have to agree with his believes if he's thinking about Vengeance. Ugh....I think I'm going to side with Templars to get his rivalry up faster. That will give me Fenris friendship points and I can romance him while I figure out Anders since he's supposed to be my Lady Hawke's main romance.
Has anybody released a guide or something for romance. Not as easy as I thought it was going to be.

It’s great reading everyone’s responses! I’m glad I’m not the only one. I’ll keep playing my character as I have been, but maybe take a slightly more extreme edge when it comes to decisions (ie. choosing the placating choices less), and see if that provokes stronger reactions. And if I don’t become close with anyone, then lesson learned for the 2nd go-around.

Might anyone know the console commands for adding friendship/rivalry points? I'm also nearing the end of act one and making no real headway with anyone. Maybe that'll change in act 2, but... doubt it.

He's such a little twerp brother, but pretty awesome nonetheless. When he defended me to Fenris I wanted an option to go "Aww... [awkward shoulder punch]"

The friendship/rivalry system being different from DAO's notwithstanding, will companions leave the party if you push them too far? Any chance of them betraying you a la Zevran?
I'm not seeking spoilers, just a general sense of what consequences our choices can have.

I try my best to get "friendly Carver", I finally got him to neutral then he gives me +10 rivaly for accepting a fetch quest...

***minor spoilers ahead****
It's in the end of Fenris's recruiting mission. When Fenris mentions that my Hawke is a mage, Carver immideately says " If you have a problem with my sister, you have a problem with me". Which was simply adorable. Also I noticed that Carver likes when you ask for his input in various conversations and his friendship goes up a bit.
Other than that - rivalry/friendship system is hard! (but very fun). I just want everyone to be friends with Hawke

I like this system, it's really keeping me on my toes. Took awhile for me to decide this, however. I can't wait to do my next playthrough as a good mage and see how it differs!
