I have no sound of any kind in the game. Sound works fine in Windows and in all of my other games. I have sound at the splash screen, but as soon as I click "play", I have no sound in the Bioware "opening trailer" or beyond that.

I've never heard of this company before; it's odd that Creative hasn't sued them for using X-Fi as a brand name (unless they've licensed the tech). did you try using an alternate output, like plugging headphones into the card directly? And, does the game recognize it correctly in the config program?

They have licensed the tech. There is an actual X-Fi chip on the board and it uses Creative ALchemy. I do not have any headphones to test. The game recognizes the sound card in the config program.

hmmm... if it uses Creative Alchemy... have you tried the Creative autoupdater on their site?

Edit - nm
Still waiting to hear back from EA tech support.
As far as I can tell, I can't use the Creative updater, since it isn't a Creative sound card. (only the X-Fi chip is)

I see you have your own thread so I'll continue here. You aren't using Alchemy with the game currently are you? DAO shouldn't need Alchemy at all. As for the sound output. If you don't have any headphones readily available to test with then just disable the DTS encoding and it should at least output stereo from the game if its an encoding issue.

After further testing (with and without headphones) I have narrowed the problem down to the DD/DTS encoding. If I disable the encoding, I can get stereo output through the optical digital to my AV setup, so that is something at least. I wish I could have surround sound though. 2 channels bites =/

Sorry to ask again, but can you reenable 5.1 and DTS and then load DAO and then post the log. This log must have been from the headphones as it is stating 2 channel stereo.

I don't know why the log shows stereo sound. Everywhere in Windows and the sound card control panel it shows 5.1 surround.

Is there any way to force surround sound through the INI file or something?

I have windows 7 x64 and I also have the prelude sound card. But in my logfile for DAO it says I'm getting 5.1 audio. I'm using dolby digital live instead of dts. I'm not using an optical cable as I use the barracuda 5.1 headphones.
I'm not using alchemy for anything, sound works fine for me with any game. Check the dragonage.ini for the line UseStereoSound and make sure it says UseStereoSound=0.

Usually when I get problems like that, I check and doublecheck the simplest of things. Settings in both the sound cards options and windows, cables etc. Hope you get it to work. I'll be checking if I can force my system to load the game with stereo while using 5.1 without using the setting.

Do you have the DVD version? Or Steam? Did you install the 1.01a or 1.01b patch?

What mode do you run the game in? I just ask because I've met people who use entertainment mode for everything. Try running in both entertainment and gaming. The only difference between our systems that I can see is that you use the optical cable and dts.

Bollwerk, try this:
1) In Windows 7, in the sound properties. Have you tried going into "Configure" for your default sound output device and checked to make sure it's on 5.1? If so, test it and make sure you get the test chimes in all your speakers. If so, your sound in Windows is setup fine, so now we narrow it down to the game only.
2) When you launch the DA:O launcher, does sound play in all surround speakers? If yes, click Play to go into the game. Do you hear the dragon in the initial popups? If no, then there is a conflict with your encoding specific to launching the game. Possibly with your DD/DTS encoding.
3) If you get to the in-game DA:O menu and you hear the theme song, but it is in stereo only. Don't worry, it's supposed to be like that. I thought it was weird at first too. Once you play the game, your surround should work for certain sounds like voices behind you, and other ambience.

Never mind. I finally fixed it. I had to set the default sound output device in Windows to "speakers", rather than spdif out. Not sure why this only affects Dragon Age, but now I have 5.1 sound. Yay!

Hey i am having a simil probloem.
My audio card is a realthek HD (chip is the AL1200). I have a Logitech 540 system for (5.1) + a separate amp for the surround back speakers. Of course i am using multichannel since my audio card had DD live and my speakers can't decode.
So basically i have 3 cable running from mobo to Logitech and and 1 more cable from mobo to the external amp. In windows all worls properly (i can run the 7.1 test in control panel-> audio and when every speaker lights up the correct speaker sound properly).
Well finally in DAO (who correctly recognies the 7.1 since it reads the info it from win vista).
I can't hear the lateral speakers.
I tought:
- is DAO 5.1? Nha cant be i read of people running it in true positional audio 7.1. Morevoer: in a 5.1 i should listen to lateral and not to rear speakers.
Moreover the Windows fill-option should fill my lateral speakers if there is no dedicated sound for 'em. i dont hear from 'em ---> there must be a problem!
Solution = go creative?
Thanks ppl
