I've updated my NVidia drivers, I've made sure to flip Configuration from DX11 back to DX9, I've updated my firewall exceptions, I've run as administrator.

I successfully downloaded & completed the demo multiple times when it launched. I've lowered all my settings, uninstalled, & reinstalled.

I successfully reach the DA2 Launcher & hit "Play" then wait. Within 10-30 seconds I get a window stating (No details given) "Dragon Age II has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. WIndows will close the program & notify you if a solution is available."  (Of course it doesn't have one yet.)

Laptop Specs:

Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU     T7700  @ 2.40GHz
2GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Microsoft Windows Vista (SP2)
DirectX 11 (Jun2010) or later (I have the settings set to DX9 which I am happy to use just an FYI)

I just want to play the game I've paid for. :(

Update: Updated to the current (Non beta) Nvidia graphics driver for my card.
Installed game via DVD/CD
Problem Occurs 100% of the time ever since first attempt to start

Anything else I am missing?

As I understand it dozens of forum posters are having this exact problem or something similar.

I've tried everything directly listed. I'm about to try shutting down my anti-virus, anti-spyware, & firewall just to see if I get anywhere with that. I've posted emails, chatted up people in other threads & I have yet to see a response from a Bioware rep or any of the "technical experts but not officially with Bioware" people who are nice enough to try & help...

Will update this thread with anything else I try.

Updating. Turned off Avast Anti-Virus, turned off Spybod S&D, turned off Window's firewall.

Still crashed upon clicking "Play" in DA2 launcher.

Update:

Just remembered. I have downloaded all existing DLC/activated all existing DLC for the game (Signature edition, Black Emporium, Exile, all weapons, etc etc etc)

I have no idea how to *uninstall* them if necessary & go from there...

mangor, I have tried everything listed. I've tried everything not listed. One question I would like answered, is if the Demo requires the same specs as the full version, if it does, shouldn't the full version be able to play as well?

same problem here, the funny thing though, I installed the game on my newer laptop and the game launched into "release date checker" and after that loaded the game launched, anyone know of a way to manually start the release date checker?

I assume that the Demo would require the same specs so you would know in advance if you can't play the full version. I would also assume that the "Configure" screen would tell you if you do not have the equipment to play the game when it scans your computer. I'm uncomfortable making such assumptions without any actual knowledge of them being true however. I believe the GFX card listed is of sufficient level to allow me to play the game.

Anything not listed that you've tried so I can try it as well?

I'm about to find the first born child of some family in the area & sacrifice them to Baal and see if that works... (JK :) )....

Same issue here. I get a generic runtime error as soon as I click "play." I can either skip the Bioware/EA splash or allow the dragon to fly around but either way the game crashes and I get:

Runtime Error!

Program: c:\\programfiles (x86)\\s...

The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I should note that I was able to launch the first time and play up until the first city....Kirkwall I believe?  At any rate, I saved and quit and the game hasn't worked since.

I do not try dealing with more than one per thread (original author). Try a Geforce driver from the 19x.xx series of older ones, other than 196.75 (I don't know that there was one for Win 7 old enough, though). Your graphics card has gotten quite old by now, at least for modern games, and nVIDIA is really having a terrible time with newer drivers, especially as those affect their 7n00, 8n00, and 9n00 cards.

Well if you want to give me $300+ to get a new vid card & then help me install it in my laptop I'll totally get a new one... (Would a $300 even get me a vid card that is an upgrade on mine right now? The vid card market moves so fast & they have such a ridiculous numbering system that with a job + everything else in life I haven't been able to follow that.

Anyways I digress. Thanks Gorath I'll try downloading an older driver (I was orignally using a 186. or some such driver before the DLIng the newest 216. driver & was still having problems. At this point I'll try anything.)

Is there a way to find & download old video driver software through Nvidia? I went back to their site & the page for my card & they don't seem to have old drivers for me to go through.

It's usually further down on the page. I'll look again, and here is where I always start:

http://www.nvidia.co...aspx?lang=en-us

Right. Halfway down that very first page is a block of links, the first of which is "Beta and archived drivers". Go there, click on that.

For the other member complaining about Bioware not answering, they do not have any Tech Support staff at all. EA pays those on the EA Help site. This is a Self-Help place, and we do get some interaction with some of Bioware's personnel on their newest releases while those are still brand new, but it never amounts to anything but a small minority of the answers.

Thanks Gorath. Hopefully this works (Crosses fingers) I've put in a ticket with EA but we'll see... well

Hopefully Bioware buys itself a support staff before SWTOR launches because MMO's need a full time massive staff for that sort of thing (If that MMO actually wants to succeed that is...) Going through EA for support well... I'm just not optimistic about that.

Your craches connected with DragonAge2config.exe file. You need to bypass it starting directly DragonAge2.exe in bin derictory.

Alright installed driver version 195.62 & still no joy. I also tried version 186.81.

I guess I'll have to call EA Tech Support after work tomorrow or hope that whatever response/answer they give me via the website actually works.

Just saw this. Thanks. If this works I'll declare my undying love for you.

Nope didn't work just crashed way faster this way (Didn't bring up the launcher)

Went to Program Files>DA2>bin_ship>DragonAge2 & it just crashed.

I'm tempted to uninstall DA2>Reinstall & attempt to boot up the game for the first time directly through the bin_ship file. Would that help?

Bring back your 267 beta drivers and try again. But you still won't save you game progress

Probably it is also connected by that default settings is DX11 which your video card doesn't support, and to replace it is possible only through options which cause failure.

ivmindigo I haven't even seen the very first second of the game. I have no saves to save.

Also I've changed the Configs on DA2 several hours ago to use DX9 not DX11 because it seemed like DX11 was making everybody crash (not just me).

What I'm thinking of doing now is Uninstall>Reinstall>Launch via bin_ship file

I'll probably just wait until 2morrow afternoon tho so I can talk to EA before I try that.

I've never had a Bioware program do this before... ever. Spent the last 6 months playing through Assassins Creed II, Civilization V,  Fallout New Vegas, Starcraft II (And of course some replays of Dragon Age)... The only game I had trouble with was starting Civ V > DX11 so I played it using DX9, once I did that it played perfectly.

I could careless about throwing the graphics up to the highest level, I don't have the money to get that kind of rig. I just want to play the damn game period.

Also on a side note: If DA 2 was unplayable on my comp *period* why did Bioware let me play the fracking demo? Why not tell me weeks ago so I could cancel my pre-order & keep my money?

My computer specs are theoritically within the minimum threshold of DA 2... but in actuality they aren't? Then why release incorrect minimum reqs? Doesn't seem like a very customer service friendly thing to do.

So still no resolution to my problem & coming up on 24 hours & no response from EA on my official trouble ticket with them. Not like I should expect anything this far in...

I'm having the same problem here. I'm getting pretty ticked off that this kind of thing hasn't been addressed by someone from BioWare. I put in a ticket to EA yesterday and still have yet to get a response. I have yet to be able to play at all. : /

There is no official support for laptops.  The manufacturers won't adhere to standards, particularly with regard to video hardware.  A desktop 8600 GT is most certainly above the minimum.  A laptop 8600M might be anywhere in the entire performance spectrum.  Personally, I kept warning people to take the Demo's performance as only a general idea, not really a proof that any Low End anything might work in the full game.

I'm sorry you didn't understand the disreputable reputation of laptops, but that is what the facts happen to be.  I don't know with any certainty that the card you have is your reason for trouble, but it's the only thing that has shown up here in the thread that might be a cause.

Sigh. Having this problem too.
