There is no official support for laptops. The manufacturers won't adhere to standards, particularly with regard to video hardware. A desktop 8600 GT is most certainly above the minimum. A laptop 8600M might be anywhere in the entire performance spectrum. Personally, I kept warning people to take the Demo's performance as only a general idea, not really a proof that any Low End anything might work in the full game.magor1988x wrote...
So still no resolution to my problem & coming up on 24 hours & no response from EA on my official trouble ticket with them. Not like I should expect anything this far in...
I'm sorry you didn't understand the disreputable reputation of laptops, but that is what the facts happen to be. I don't know with any certainty that the card you have is your reason for trouble, but it's the only thing that has shown up here in the thread that might be a cause.
So I have no choice but to lug a massive desktop to all of my college classes & back & forth between CA & Washington DC?
I've played Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age:Origins & Awakening & a crap ton of other recent titles just fine. I've only had two titles with any problems whatsoever in the last 3 years.
Dragon Age II & Civ V . I solved my problems with Civ V in less than 5 minutes on my own & haven't had a problem since. I've bought every Bioware game since KOTOR launched, including preorders for ME2 & DA2...
If EA Cust Serv won't respond to my ticket via their support site the one time I actually need it they may lose me as a paying customer forever. I was planning on pre-ordering SWTOR & ME3 (And virtually any other title that Bioware comes out with).... But they may have lost me forever cuz their lack of service.

I'm with you on this one as well. I hit PLAY in the launcher and the game crashed immediately after the validation check went through OK. Restarted it, it crashed immediately. Rebooted, restarted, it again crashes.
All I ever see is the splash screen, and a second later, "Dragon Age II has stopped working" ...
Great. Just great. The demo ran fine and the system is well above minimal specs.

Alright things to try:
Empty your temp folder
Turn off unnecessary applications using windows task manager
Turn off your anti-virus software.
----If it still doesn't work----
Update to NVidia's BETA version of your driver (Both NVidia & a lot of DA2 players have said this has helped- I'm about to try it myself)
Be sure to uninstall/deactivate any old Nvidia driver software if you are going to use this method
Restart your comp
If it still doesn't work
Uninstall DA2 completely then Reinstall
Restart
This is where I am at right now. The first three steps I mention is exactly what EA support reps will ask you to do.

I'm having the same problem. I'm a desktop user btw.
Can't get further than the launcher, the game crashes when you press 'configure' or 'play'. Magor, I followed all the steps you've written down, but sadly they don't work for me. Thanks anyway:P

Yea nobody is getting info for why. I have been in contact with EA support & a friend who works for Sony Santa Monica who is a tech genius type.
Basically my friend from Sony is having me try the beta NVidia driver (which hasn't worked so far).
EA gave me the steps I used above (haven't worked) & bumped my ticket.
They did however confirm that my laptop meets all the requirements to play DA2 (So it should work & its not 100% my fault its not working).
I'll keep updating this thread with any info or steps that EA tells me to take. I may even post links to screenshots of the live chats/emails with EA support.
This is very frustrating. I've had the game in my postion for 28:30 hours now & I still haven't been able to play it.

Same problem (press play, brief DOS window, then nothing)
laptop with T7500 dual core 2.2 GHz, 3 GB RAM, nVidia 8600M GT with 512 MB RAM, Directx 9.0C
updated drivers, etc. etc., no luck yet. I'm currently reinstalling
I am running AVG anti-virus. The first time I started the game after installing, AVG popped up saying it detected the "Vundo" virus in two files in my Temp folder, but associated with the Dragon Age application. I let it quarantine the files (since they were in the temp folder, figured it shouldn't be an issue). After re-installing, it will be interesting to see if I get the same problem with AVG. If I do, I won't quarantine the files, and will try running without AVG.

My specks (same problem, I hit play and it shuts itself off)
Intel Core i7 CPU 860 @ 2.90GHz 2.70Ghz,
Installed memor 8GB
Operating system Windows 64 bit
Updated nVidia drivers
Updated audio drivers.
I switched to DirectX 9
IT WON"T START!
This really sucks that we're getting no help for the good money we paid. I guess EA doesn't care if they have loyal customers or not.

I had the same problem and I figured it out. Go into configure and turn off both options under online. It allows the game to load and you can still access all the online content

Got it working. I re-installed, disabled AVG anti-virus, and when starting Dragon Age, I kept it with the default video settings until getting into the game.

yeah ive turned of Avast AntiV & it still wont work. I've also cleaned out all files associated with DA II Demo & my My Docs>Bioware>DA2 folder (didnt have the demo installed but left the My Docs>Bio>DA2 Demo folder in my docs until just now) still crashed.
apparently this could be an Nvidia problem or a problem with a certain set of Nvidia cards. Will keep tracking down possible solutions.
