I don't care for Carver.

Is it possible to play as a mage along with Bethany? Or will she always get Ogre-stomped?

You could always try not to be her Rival in the beginning. I think the Rogue should choose which one dies since neither Bethany or Carver are Rogues. I find myself needing him more than Bethany since i wanna use Merrill as my mage with my Archer.

not possible. if you are a mage Beth gets stomped. warrior or rogue, then Carver gets stomped

I suggest staying with Carver and making him your rival

Eh, I'm more interested in watching him die and not having to suffer through the game with him at my side. Guess it's rogue for me.

Well you could start out as a Warrior or Rogue, then change your class to a Mage after Carver dies using the console.

... Right? I heard Dragon Age II uses the same console commands as the first. It may give you some "iffy" dialog situations throughout the game, and nobody will realize you're a mage, but oh well.
