Done it in Hard Mode. Hate to think what it would be like on Nightmare level. Came down to just me(a mage) and AWR. But the dodging and continual summoning of the Dog got me through.

This is just impossible for my group on hard difficulty. I will reduce the difficulty and laugh at the poor level of designing a difficulty level. Difficulty is achievable, not impossible like this. Hawke Rogue, Bethany as Healer/supporter Varric and Aveline as Tank, this is just impossible. He hits so hard, you cannot outheal it.

It is a fool's errand to play this game on hard.

Me and many others have done it multiple times on nightmare.. without to much issues. Dont try to tank him, if you dont have too. People can kill him under a minute pre patch, and speculated is that it can be even faster now

Read the forums and watch some movies, you`ll see its far from impossible

I recorded the fight earlier today with a very similar group to yours, instead of Bethany I have Anders.
Maybe this video helps you. It's far from being under a minute but at least under 1.40.
Key talents are upgraded Lacerate and Shield Bash.

I just redid the battle on Hard diffulty using a rogue-Hawke on the new patch. The new patch actually makes this particular battle much harder than it was before. It's true the Ancient Rock Waith has far few hit-points, but that means he spawns more Profane, more often and almost immedately goes into "rolling rock" mode which is viscious ESPECIALLY when the profanes he summons in the new patch now hit much harder than before and have significantly more hit points which means they don't go down with a single fire-storm (like the did before). It also means the run and regen strats don't work as well, but they STILL work.

My major suggestion from what I've seen so far in the new patch is when the Ancient Rock Wraith summons the profane you need to make the profane a priority target (unless you know you can kill the Ancient Rock Wraith in under a few seconds) because otherwise the Profane will tear your group to pieces.

I just redid it on nightmare with an old party. have no DLC items at all, party has horrible skills for this fight and i made it. The fight is way easier now. The profanes died very fast, so not sure why you said they were tougher now.

I think that with an optimized party this guy is a cakewalk now (as in speedwise, as he was never hard when you understand him). Cant wait till my new partys reach this fellow.

Profanes are tougher now. All "mooks" have more hit points in 1.3. The thing is that the Ancient Rock Wraith has far less but this is a MIXED BLESSING becaues you get the spawning and party-hoser triggers much faster and closer together.

Well like i said, i redid it with a old party, my first nightmare run actually. My rogue has no special items, all whites, save for 1 dagger. I still pretty much one hit all the profanes with decent cunning + pinpoint strikes. I can only imagine how fast they'd die if i had those nice DLC items on me

Anyway , i always had atleast one guy prioritize profanes over the ARW to clean them up since they tended to stagger my squishies to death otherwise

I don't know about under a minute, but you can destroy the boss in good time (keep in mind the cap on rogue damage). As long as you use assasinate as your go to, you can do significant damage, but you have to chain with the entropy DR reduction and twin fang to get the same effect as last time.

They don't stagger you. They're not as bad. The fight is still a terrible drawn out pain without a rogue Hawke. Isabella is a help with twin fang + weakness, but it's not the same as an assasin.

Post-Patch SnS Warrior - 20-Second Ancient Rock Wraith Kill

for those still playing unpatched:

Pre-Patch SnS Warrior - 40-Second Ancient Rock Wraith Kill

If people are still struggling with the ARW, I can tell you exactly what I did to kill it so fast, as it's something that can easily be replicated if you know what to do.

edit: and yes, before a pc player whines at me, both vids are on nightmare, and no, I am not cheating.

Lol the ball roll attack deals damage? I was playing on normal, and Aveline had some pretty high damage resistance. I didn't notice. I kept wondering what the big deal was. She just stood there, back to the wall, swinging away as normal.

First dealing with this over-sized mobile rock on the nightmare difficulty by using the archer rogue.

My strategy is hiding behind the four pillars, that's also the vital place to evade all of the enormous damage of him. I tried to attract him by my archer as much as possible and prevented him from attacking the other allies. My dog was nearly useless in this fight since he did minor damage to the rock and with 2 or 3 hits, he dissappeared.

Honestly I spent more than 20 minutes in this fight. Hope I can reduce more with the next playthrough.

It does. But you instantly regen that damage back, as long as you're in melee with the ARW. You nearly instantly regen all melee damage in that phase - as long as you survive the hits, that is. I did bump my con a bit and had no problems meleeing the ARW with a DW Rogue on Nightmare in this phase (though did get knocked around a lot). But if you die, you stay dead. Also if you disengage ARW, you stop getting your health restored.

As I don't see this brought up much and mostly everyone advises to range the ARW in this phase, I imagine this life-sucking from ARW COULD be a rare bug.

did you use beraht's revenge?
if so that's probably where your 'life-sucking' came from- though I wouldn't have thought that it would be able to regen that much- maybe they nerfed the ARW's damage. in the past it used to be roll into fragile party member to send them flying and before they could stand up do a weird explosion and finish them off. The only thing that could withstand it was I think stonewall (which supposedly stopped the ARW in its tracks)

Nah, I don't have the item pack DLC. Way too cheesy for me ;)

And that was pre-patch, some time ago, so without any nerfs to damage.
If I'm the only one experiencing health restoration when hit by ARW in melee in its second stage (damage is applied, but almost instantly regenerated), perhaps that's some weird glitch.

Having a mage around with your melee rogue can't hurt either
- ice (and iirc electricity) - just take cover as close as possible
to the crates while the radiation attack after the arw's 2nd
teleport lasts (right before the profanes spawn)

i always win this fight, but usually with only 1 or 2 survivors...if im unlucky its just Hawke and i spend 20-30 mins whittling away at him...this is on hard...not sure how i would cope on NM...

I just wish i could keep my ranged guys away...they always seem to move toward it...or im too slow to move them when it does the roll thing

it's all about dealing lots of damage fast. that way you avoid the rolling phase.

i just did it in ~30seconds with a DW hawke and a completely unoptimised party. I even had electricity staves on for the first bit. I could record a speedrun if anyone is interested?

I'm thinking I could get close to the 20seconds that Arelex got for a S&S- shadow is that overpowered.

I think all the boss fightsd are really more an excercise in patience than skill. When I got killed it is because I stopped doing whatever I'd been doing and tried and fight "normally" because I'm bored. I beat all of them to prove my worth as a gamer and now switch to casual because the fights bore me to tears.
