Holy Moly, I've been switching between hard and nightmare for the battles just cos I want a challenging but not frustrating gameplay but had to go down to Normal for the Rock Wraith. Talk about super huge difference in difficulty.

I had Carver, Fenwick, Varric and me (mage), with no healing and only 10 heal pots.. I could not do it on Hard.

Ander: must have upgraded Heal, upgraded Haste, upgraded Heroic Aura, Pancrea, and Aid Group.

I appreciate the advice, as this battle is nasty.  But Anders' ability is called Panacea, which refers to something that cures everything, a cure-all.  "Pancrea" is similar to pancreas, which is an organ in the body that helps with digestion and produces insulin.

Nitpicking aside, thanks for the tips.  This battle is rough.

I am only playing on normal for my first playthrough. I am playing a mage and for the first time in the game I had to take full control of the my tank, who was Fenris, so that I could try and keep the wraiths attention away from Hawke, Varric and Merrill. I have Hawke set as being fully capable of all healing and I would switch to him for group or individual heals, plus use potions as needed.

I wiped on my first encounter, not knowing what to expect. The second time everyone lived and once I figured out that I didn't have to micro-manage everyone except during the explosions of energy and when killing the adds it went much better.

I agree with an earlier poster. Its hard on console to move and control your party like on PC. I watched the video posted earlier in this thread and it looks kinda easy. I haven't figured out how to move and control my party that well on XBox.

Played him on normal. I beat him the 2nd time through. I've read a lot of complaints about the boss being uber difficult even on normal. I found a lot of it to be heavy CCing, especially after the energy explosion thing. The rock dudes have to go down fast, though he will take damage when recovering. So, hop around, do a bit of group micro managing and you should be fine. Again, this is for normal difficulty, so no boasting here =P

This is ridiculous... Playing on hard...figured out both stages of the fight by myself..including the 'hide-when-he-laser-beams' ..but it was taking so long that I thought I was doing it wrong or that there was some other strategy. Unfortunately there is no short cut, it is a __MASSIVELY__ long boss battle..glad to have confirmed that...but this is such a _PAIN_ why can't bioware reduce his health or add some switchable element in the room that can increase the party damage when he falls apart ?

Just beat him on hard. That video on this thread really is helpful. Watch it. I play on 360 and I finally figured out how to move the whole party at once. You need to move far away from him. Get in his face with your tank and let the ranged guys hit from afar. You have to move a lot. Right after his laser fest, run in and do as much damage as you can. It took me about 20 minutes. I was taking 925 with Cleave and Mighty Blow when he was cooling down. It will keep you on your toes.

I was frustrated with this fight on hard. I had brought Fenris and Anders, my rogue (who was dual wield) and of course you're stuck with Varric.

Unfortunately my Fenris did not have the ability to stand there and take hits (as my buddy tells me his Aveline could) so tanking him was simply NOT an option. For the massive amounts of damage he dishes out as well, a dual wield rogue is NOT an option to melee him for the most part. Here's what I did, and would work on nightmare, since none of it was AE or at least the parts that were wouldn't have hurt me.

1.) I put all my characters on hold. I don't want them moving without me telling them where, because they're idiots. (Yes, I'm on PC)
2.) I equipped a bow on Hawke, although I have 0 skill points in archery tree. This is the only way I could keep my rogue alive and still have her contribute to the fight.
3.) I ran around like a jackass using taunt and the regain stamina skill on Fenris while trying to avoid damage as Anders, Varric and Hawke poked at the boss with ranged damage.
4.) Once the boss went into the middle and spawned the adds, I micromanaged killing all the adds, dropped an Assassin's Mark on the boss himself, and went in and UNLOADED all my stamina on the boss that had accrued while I was shooting him with my bow. Obviously you stand behind the pillars when he's shooting lasers. Wait until after this to spawn your dog, which you should do as often as possible as he's a great breather for Fenris, but if he's up during LAZORS he's dead.
5.) Keep dodging attacks with whoever he's looking at, hopefully Fenris. When he does his vortex things, if you're either a.) Far enough away or b.) Behind a pillar, even marginally, you won't get sucked in. Free chance to poke away with combat skills.
6.) Keep repeating until dead.

Only AEs I used was Varric's exploding arrow or whatever when the little rocks spawned and I guess Fenris' normal attacks, which are easy to stay out of. Should work fine on Nightmare. I do not have Ander's revive skill. I do not carry revive potions, if they were even available for this fight. I used maybe 5 health potions and 3 mana potions. No one died, no was even really close to dying except poor Dogface about 8 times over, but it did take quite a while. I don't think I even took a swing at him the entire fight except while he was down on the ground after the mini rocks were dead.

I tried melee engaging and tanking this encounter about 10 times and never got him below 60%. I tried this method twice, 2/2. The first time I had him to 10% when my game locked up (</3) so I'll count that as a win.

I have been getting decimated just on Hard difficulty. Thing is I do not have a bunch of those skills at all and I cannot respec my chars. I did not buy any of those potions from the black emporium.

So now I am left with the disgusting option of having to go down to normal or easy to finish this boss and then put the difficulty back up. Real shame :(

Me too man, I feel ya

I managed to beat him on Nightmare too, took me around 10 tries, although my biggest problem was getting enough threat on Fenris* at the start to last until the first explosion phase, so my failures were at least quick.

You do not have to melee it all, it is easier for your tank to kite it around pillars when it is in warrior mode, although I agree with others that it _really_ helps to have 3 good ranged characters for this fight, having a healing aura either on Anders or Hawke is also _really_ usefull.

Other than that though I killed it using mostly basic crossbow and staff damage. Once you have good threat on your tank the only difficult mode is ball, when he is in ball _always_ move the three characters he is not focused on to the opposite end of the room and spread them out..

*Have been using battle master aura for threat generation so my Fenris doesn't have taunt.

I dunno, on normal my 2H hawke practically soloed it, merril died when I was discovering that him turning red and shooting lasers hurts (hawke didn't notice)

Anders was healing (panacea on)
Varric was... doing something.
Hawke was using cleave/heavy hit/whirlwind/scythe

I think I needed one pot for hawke... the others never had anything. That was mainly because I never told the others to move (except for the glowing ball phase) and they got rolled (literally :D ) later on. This forced Hawke to pot once, after that it died.

2H warriors are pretty op'd.

i finally beat this guy on hard but it took like twenty five minutes of micro movement and auto attacking. basically you have to baby sit everyone and make sure they stay out of his range. i was happy when i finally won but this fight killed all my interest in trying nightmare mode though lol

Beat him on hard with anders varric dw rogue hawke and aveline.
In phase one the only problem is to keep the rogue alive so i just positioned anders and varric between the south pillars and pulled the wraith in the north. when he ports in the middle I moved everyone behind his own pillar. When the adds spawn you have about 3 seconds till they are active and thanks to the dw hawke you can kill about 2 sides off then bevor they even react. the other ones are killed bei the rest of the team.
in this phase you can get the wraith to ~60% by popping imp. haste (anders) mark of death, pinpoint strikes etc

in the next phase some micromanaging is required, but thanks to knockback imunity on aveline and the wraiths low damage on her she could even stand in the black hole without problems. Its possible with the rogue to dodge black holes and the small knockback if your fast enough. My ranged just stood outside the black holes radius(or behind a pillar) in the south.
I got him down after the third explosion phase.

I felt light a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders when I beat him last night without tanking and lowering the difficulty. I was in such a good mood for a monday morning all cause of this. Hahaha.

I am playing on hard difficulty and beat the Rock Wraith on my 4th try I think
My party was:
Archer Hawke
Varric
Isabela
Aveline

I was only able to use Isabela when the RW was focusing on Aveline. But her Unforgiving chain combo helped quite a bit.
It took a very long time and I used 8 health potions and 6 stamina potions but everyone survived.

Very annoying (as others have pointed out already): Even on "hold positions" the characters tend to run towards the Rock Wraith no matter what.

Its all about moving and dodging him by controlling all the party members at once (on xbox its LB and RB at once) then moving to a point away from the Wraith. Engage with Tank character and MAX damage when he cools down and spawns those additions. Have your party kill off those things while your greatest damage dealer can focus on the RW.

Ive done this game on nightmare until now. With the dragon boss before him I was able to leave the area, have everyone come back to life and go back and kill him as he was walking back to his room. Seeing as how Rock Wraith teleports around the room im thinking it will be more difficult to do this, Im using Varric, Bellany, and Fenris. If anyone has some strategies theyd like to run by me id be happy to listen.

fights like this show how badly implemented some of the "teamwork" things are. The amount of baby-sitting, as someone said, is unrealllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

Funny you should bring up "teamwork," as cross-class combos don't seem to work on the Ancient Rock Wraith at all.  This battle features a glaring difficulty spike that I foresee being patched.

I was using tank Hawke, Anders Varric and Merill.

I would always have my ranged on the opposite side of the room to where the boss was and hawke always taking the brunt of the damage rotating Barrier and Stonewall. I didn't need to use any health potions but used lyrium and stamina pots on the add waves and move from the aoe snare thing. Took around 30 minutes.

Good boss if it had 30% life... If you can last 30% of it's life, you can last the whole boss...

It took me about 25 or so minutes. I scored a couple of huge hits with Cleave and Mighty Blow that helped out. Key is to keep your other 3 FAR AWAY from the RW, bu you have to keep him occupied with your tank.

Hmm, come on now, the fight was easy, got it on my 2nd try... Just gotta do one trick !

Just attack him with all your guys, make sure you have mana for area of effect skills/spells whenever there are other critters around. The trick is, whenever you see him charge for a big move, pause the game, put the "hold position" on, select all party (ctrl+A), move BEHIND one of the pillars and you're safe until the highly damaging spell is done. Go back to fight him, rinse and repeat. It may be easier to take control of a ranged attack NPC during the fighting parts so that you can clearly see and react to the Ancient Rock Wraith charging a high damage spell.

Sage advice indeed.
