and i lost alot of xp by changeing the difficulty Oo not sure why. mayb the tome from bonus content got resetted. anyway lost a lvl oh well who cares. and i didnt get it back when i went back on nightmare after the boss.
but at my second play through i will go spirithealer + anders for deep roads and get him on nightmare ^^ lots of heal fenris and isabella.

You can definitely beat him on hard without a healer. You just have to pause very often. I would reload and try again instead of sacrificing all that xp.gr33n3 wrote...
i had the glorious idea to go without a healer. the dragon i had to kite summon dog do some hits kite till dog rdy again lol. oh and the rogue skill where u dissapear and create an dublicate is buggy. sometimes the bosses just stand around even after its dead. arthishok for example

I had a hard time on casual with a healer, for some reason. I just can't do good against this one boss, for Maker knows why!

Anders- Frost arcane and creation spec
Varric Bianca and Marksman spec
Fenris 2hander Vanguard Lyrium spec
Hawke Sword and shield battlemaster spec
I didnt have any of anders special tree and only had 2 health and 3 stam potions the real saviour was battlemaster which gave me improved rally and second wind to keep the parties resources up
Also i quite often had to switch to hold postion mode and manually controlled all the members (normally during the rolling phase) Varric with marksmanship maxed out has an absurd amount of damage and fenris really only shined when the adds came out id have him stick on the boss with all cooldowns blown damaging it.
I actually had alot more trouble with the Abandonned thaig encounter in act 2 with the evil tome

Hmm, come on now, the fight was easy, got it on my 2nd try... Just gotta do one trick !
Just attack him with all your guys, make sure you have mana for area of effect skills/spells whenever there are other critters around. The trick is, whenever you see him charge for a big move, pause the game, put the "hold position" on, select all party (ctrl+A), move BEHIND one of the pillars and you're safe until the highly damaging spell is done. Go back to fight him, rinse and repeat. It may be easier to take control of a ranged attack NPC during the fighting parts so that you can clearly see and react to the Ancient Rock Wraith charging a high damage spell.
Sage advice indeed.
What the heck is your problem ? The first sentence you put in bold doesn't reflect the whole strategy that I propose in my post.

Againt the Ancient Rock Wraith I get on average 315 to 350 dmg per hit using Winter's Grasp.
Also my Cone of Cold will 1 shot kill the standard rock wraiths. So if they are grouped you just destroy them.
Edit:
It's also weak to Spirit dmg. I can get 200+ dmg with Spirit Bolt from Anders. With my mage setup I would probably double that easily. It a cheap fast spell. Probably better to use than cold dmg. I wish my mage had it.
- I also found a spot where it can get stuck doing it's ball/arm spinning thing. Not that I take advatage of it

Has anyone tried "Crushing Prison" on the ARW? Any other spells besides cold based ones effective against it?
I don't have the spell to test but here is what I found out so far.
Weakness (From Highest to Lowest):
1. Ice/Spirit
2. Stone Fist
3. Lightning
I can get around 230 - 250 with Cone of Cold, 120 - 150 with Stone Fist, and around 100 +/- with Chain Lightning. As I mentioned above Winter's Grasp pushes 315 to 350 and I think Spirit Bolt is gonna be around the same. I can't test it with my mage but I get 200+ with Anders.
Edit:
I just wonder with a heavy mage party using ice/spirit how long it wouold take to kill. You're talking about a possible 1000 dmg hit from 3 mages combined. Also Ice works wonders on Dragons so that could work really well as a primary group.

Something to keep in mind when fighting him especially during the 3rd stage when he goes in and out of that attack mode.
Edit:
Also when Anders has his heal mode active and can't use offensive spells, that is like garunteeed aggro for the ARW. He's always attackign me or chasing me down when I control him.

I have met many stupid gamepla designs in my life but throwing this "thing" that came straight out of WoW in the middle of a game going gradually up in difficulty terms must be one of the top 10!

I think this is probably worse on normal than on higher difficulties. When you're on normal, most fights are pretty trivial. Just kill stuff. Even the dragon in the Deep Roads is a pushover. Then suddenly you meet mr Rock Wraith and you actually have to micromanage.
He's not difficult at all when you do micromanage. But it comes as a complete shock when you're not used to doing that on normal at all. There really should have been a learning curve, requiring more and more micromanagement before meeting this guy.
And bosses like the Rock Wraith should have just had fewer hit points if you ask me. But I guess nobody did

Plus I was getting 150+ spirit dmg with a Spirit Staff dmg while it is on the ground.
Hmmmmm, seems like if you can gut it out when it's up and walking, you could do some really good dmg while it's down.

Yeah, it seems immune to the CC, but it does take the damage.

Anyways I had to get passed it to continue on with the game. I'll come back to it and beat it on nightmare later.

"MOTHER @^@#&#$&*$%*@*%#*%^#*%%$%^&$*@$* STUPID ^$&#&*%$*$*$*^$$ PIECE OF ^@#&#$&*%$*$*$"
P.S. Only the second time it has ever crashed, so I never imagined this would be a problem

This guy is a joke, i was able to beat him quite easily even without a healer on hard. Really its reqiures a lot micromanaginc and manual dodging. But he shouldn't be too hard.

Pray...just pray. I'm just gonna suck it up and drop the difficulty for this one if I don't take him out in the next couple of tries. It's not worth the life of my ps3 controllers. Next playthrough, I'll be ready for that bugger
that's where i am. (pc version tho). considering just dropping difficulty lvl just to get past it. if i can swallow my pride for an attempt.
