Okay, given that I haven't played the game before it took me a while to figure out that this was happening. I kept thinking, "Huh, these conversations keep beginning on really odd, abrupt lines."

It's only by chance at my reloading did I somehow get one dialogue with Carver to start at the actual beginning and realized the first time it had skipped over the first two lines. It took about six reloads with this incomplete version showing up for it to start properly again. Now I've realized this is consistently happening with my companion dialogues as well. I'll miss the first line and it will start with the second companion's reply, often something like "What do you mean?"

EDIT: And that's not to say the audio simply isn't playing. I've looked for subtitles (which I always keep on), but there are none, and there is no long pause. It instantaneously skips to the second or third line, bypassing the beginning of the conversation.

It's quite frustrating, because I'm losing a lot of information and dialogue this way. Does anyone know what the problem is?

I had a similar problem with the demo (can't play the full yet).

Back then I had the theory that it was due to a lack of memory. Can't be sure though but at the time I had only 2gb of working memory left to test the demo and right now have the whole memory in for replacement.

I just had a lot of "loading" during the cutscenes and so on (which I am pretty sure was a problem of memory) and simply assumed that missing parts of the dialogues was another symptom or otherwise intentionally cut out in the demo to not spoiler the story too much.
Since I don't expect to get the replacement memory until the end of next week at the earliest I won't be able to test that theory, sry.

So if you only have up to 2gb memory yourself that could very well be the problem.
