Thought I'd post this here after reading just about every post in the forum regarding installation problems. Here's a brief summary of what I've seen and experienced and what others seem to have had success with. Please add to this list as you see fit:
-----
Problem: Failed install - retail DVD
Tip: Try copying the files off of the DVD onto your hard drive first and then run the setup

Problem: Failed install digital download (symptoms include CRC errors, specific rar files not copying over)
Tip: I had to re-download another copy of the installer files (yep, another 5+ hours of waiting ). Then I extracted the ZIP file with 7Zip and this time I did not receive a CRC error. Installation went all the way to the end and then failed (see next).

Problem: Installation process ends with a "Failed to Install" message. No additional symptoms or messages.
Tip: I ran the installtion process again and oddly, it completed without errors. I have no explaination for this.

Just another suggestion. My friend was experiencing installation failed issues but without any issues such as hanging up on the core_audio.rar or others. He managed to fix it by creating iso of DVD and then mounting it on a virtual drive. Might be a fix for anyone not experiencing the core_audio.rar hang up.

So I've been having problems with it extracting the audio file. Just for the heck of it I tried another disc drive I have installed on my computer. That seemed to fix the problem. I can't really explain why it did. Now I'm hoping I don't run into any other bugs!! Good luck all!

Lately, both Bethesda and Bioware have released games that are sensitive to the brands and types of DVD drives. Your work-around has been needed often for both companies' recent releases.

I had the same problem with the installer hanging up on "extracting core_audio.rar" on 0.0%. Altough, turning off Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware solved the problem, and now it runs smoothly.

I bought the Digital Version of DA2 from Direct2Drive.
When trying to install the game, I had the 'Installation Failed' Issue.
I found out it was my Internet security Suite which blocked certain files in the application (without telling me ofcourse)
I have Comodo Internet Security Premium.
How I resolved it:
1 - In the firewall tab I chose 'Define a New Trusted Application' and browsed it to the extracted folder('C:\\temp\\da2')
2 - In the Defense+ tab I chose the 'Trusted Files' button, i cliked 'Add -> Browse Files', browsed it to the extracted folder path, and selected that folder, you should see something like : 'C:\\temp\\da2\\*' this means that it will add all files and subfolders from 'C:\\temp\\da2\\'.

I then ran the 'Setup.exe' from 'C:\\temp\\da2\\' and it installed without issues. Hopes this will help anyone having a similar problem.
Though this apply to the digital copy, It may also apply if you are experiencing the same issue on the retail disc version.

Happy gaming.
