Is it worth keeping them at low levels? Should I sell them or do they get better over time? I figure at level 5 that I will find much more powerful weapons later in the game as I increase in level.
As a mage the only item useful to me is some staff that does 22 damage. Which never happened in DA:O for me.

You'll grow out of them. Except for maybe Fadeshear, due to its unique status.

Well I sure as hell keeping Ser Isaac's armor. But that is just me. Going to sell some of the DLCs weapons that are not currently being used by my companions.

The Blood Dragon Armor is a mess, it's a copy of what it looked like in DA:O. To me also the Staff of Parthagan is sooo over powered at low levels it's ridiculous.

Yeah, I"m currently wearing it but in Act 2 there is so much better stuff... kinda wish it had been more like Fadeshear and level up as you go. At least in DA:O it was farily powerful and you couldn't use it until late in the game, but then it was useful near the end of the game... with DAII its like Equip near end f Act 1, trash it in Act 2.

I like that the DLC items are only worth 1 copper, it prevents you from being able to totally skip the initial struggle of being a poor struggling refugee by selling all yoru "inherited" goods. I was glad to have them but nothing is gamebreaking imo.

Yeah, I mean I am still using the Staff of Parthalan, that's the only item that's really worth anything. The rest is just meh.

Well, we all knew that DA2 was going to be different than Origins and that includes the armor, weapons, and how much use you get out of them. I will probably keep the Blood Dragon Armor and the Sir Issac armor around and sell the rest when I need to or if I don't need them anymore. Same with specific weapons in Origins. You can sell Duncan's sword if you want if you find something more powerful, nothing says you HAVE to keep it.

here's a dumb question: Do we start with all our unlocks in the chest on another playthrough?

If you download the items you should be able to find them in the special delivery chest, whether you just downloaded them or make a new character.
