I was merely implying that simply fighting enemies head on will not work in all situations. Sometimes you need to fall back a bit and regroup as you'll frequently get ambushed. The cheesy was in quotes as I was purposely echoing the users word choice for the strategy. Personally, I find tank and spank to be 'cheesy'.

That said, the encounter is certainly possibly to do without this strategy, I would just recommend it if you're having trouble.

I'm finding nearly every encoutner to be "cheesy" on nightmare. Not only due to the fact that combat is essentially having someone pull all the agro and run around the room (Even my tank has to kite as they cannot withstand the enemies DPS combined with their massive amount of hitpoints) while ranged DPS kills mobs but also enemies constantly appearing out of nowhere. I feel like I've slain half the cities population.

Some of the fights on nightmare are incredibly gratifying but the majority are just stupid.

In DA:O when I wiped in nightmare I would think about what I did wrong during the fight and how I could initaite better.

When I die in DA2 on nightmare its due to 1 of two things. I didn't kite well enough or I didn't expect THAT many waes of enemies to appear randomly and I'm too stubborn to constantly run in circles until my cooldowns are back up.

Dragon Age 2 is a fun game in its own right but it doesn't deserve its name. It cannot compare to Origins. This makes me sad.

Logikal1, while I agree that Origins was easier, the game was also solo-able on Nightmare.

I believe that the Frederick encounter in DA2 is difficult due to the fact that Bioware expects you to use the guards. It's possible to beat him without the guards (see my video), but you do need to run away to regroup and heal. In my second play through, I ditched the Benny Hill tactic on my second playthrough and actually beat him without dying or running around in circles (I did run away when my health was low or when my mage gets chased, but that's just smart tactics. I never run away for more than 10 seconds before re-engaging).

I'm quite disenchanted with the hard difficulty so early in the game, what a jump in difficulty! the real bummer is not that it's overall too hard, but that this enemy just seems absolutely impossible to me while the rest is a fun and reasonable challenge.
But what really p*sses me off (sry) right now is that the (one) alternative way is a piece of cake! You walk up to that merchant, let Avelin put a knife to his throat and even get friendship with her - done - you're in the city. On the other hand we have Friedrich and his army who wipes the courtyard with your party. I kind of feel my self forced into the smuggler ring...

Not sure if posting URL is against the rules or not, here is the link for Frederick on Nightmare: without help from the guards.
