Might be that some suit allowed the art department to run wild, with the writers and lore experts getting no say. The more unsettling version is that the writers just didn't care to object about the newly fugly anorexic elves and silly non threatening hurlocks and other possible abominations I haven't even seen yet.

Well, example no. 1 for sure is one of the ugliest things either DA has to offer. But it is are extreme case, the others i have seen look good.
I don't think that there is any lore problem like some here suggest. Through history we have wildly differing beauty standards, so it is not a strech to thing the people of Thedas find elves attractive, even if you do not. (Well, except for the first example here...)

I guess I'm going to be in minority here, but I really like this change (disregarding a very unfortunate screenshot that OP posted).  Elves now look alien, mystical and somehow they really do resemble children of forests. I don't think they were meant to look like humans with pointy ears. In my opinion they now have a certain animalistic quality to their looks and it suits them.  As to their attractiveness, human tastes and definitions of beauty change constantly. It's not that difficult to imagine people in Thedas finding elves pleasant to the eye. ^_^

Never let the visual artists have the final say when you have an actual setting and story.  This applies to video games, comic books, and movies.

I think they wanted to define the difference between human and elf a little more.  As in, make elves a little more than just humans with pointy ears.  I agree, they overdid it a little bit, but I think I see what they were going for.

I think it depends on the elf, Deviana. The important characters have clearly had more work done than some of the character models that turn up for a single conversation.

The elves are making me go all uncanny valley. What's with the noses, are they Na'vi now? XD

And I know elves should be small and slender but their heads look weird on their bodies. Merill looks okay, but she's a main character and more work was put into her. I'm sure that'll go for the other elf character too. But the rest just look... weird.

I hope DA3 makes them look more normal... and lets us be one.. >>

There are a handful of attractive elves. I think Merrill and Fenris are nice-looking, along with a couple of NPCs. But for the most part, ugh... I hope we get a new toolkit!

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that those are Dalish elves aka "the pure blooded" ?_?
There was some talk about it in the Dalish camp where you meet Merill.

Yeah I think having them look like small humans with pointy ears was the way to go. Now they look like circus people.

I think this is one of the places where the change is going to be the most jarring for me (as a UK player I'm not going to be playing this till after the 11th), my Dalish Warden is going to be the playthrough I import (he was my first Warden).  And Merrill's clan will be his clan, and I'm going to be looking around and wondering who stole my Warden's clan and filled them with these creatures

Well, my City Elf Warden weren't no la-di-da mystical child of the forest, and that's the way she liked it.
She liked her mum's boots too.

I can't get over how creepy the elves are now (or Bodahn and Sandal... though they're not elves >_>;;). A lot of the females have heads that are wayyyyy too big for their bodies.

Sandal is the creepiest. He has a tiny head and a different voice actor that sounds terrifying rather than cute.

I am 7 hours into the game (round about), and YES. The elves do look really bad. Merrill included. The Quanari, however, looks great.

I second this...obviously the design team that redid the Quanari (The Qunari are HOT!) weren't involved in the elven redesign. Their necks and arm are too thin, in leads to some really awkward animations.

An abover poster said they now looked like goats with down-syndrome. I second that. (And methinks the elf redesign team had too much Avatar before working on the project)

Can someone explain to me all the redesign that went with the game? Some characters that needed a redesign (Flemeth, and Isabella) I can understand but they totally went in different directions with EVERYTHING ELSE. Why is that?

Yeah, the elves, the creepy eyed dwarves (don't even get me started on what they did to Sandal), and especially the Darkspawn all have taken a turn for the worse in looks. Not to mention some humans I've run into are just damn weird looking. I do appreciate them trying to make the elves more distinctive in DA2 as you could hardly tell them apart from humans in the first one (especially long haired females). But what they've done is just wrong...

Well... It's... A unique look? I guess... But wow that is a weird "design" or whatever you might want to call it...

this is hilarious. all the people who had dalish mains in DAO are getting so worked up about how non-human elves look now. this isn't Tolkien lol

btw if you want to find the "worst" one, pay 1/2 a sovereign and look around the Rose in hightown
