IIrc, they have changed the base head models from the first game in order to get better facial animations. That in itself wouldn't really require actual change to the shape of these models, but i'd guess they were trying to improve the appearances across the board while at it, by tweaking these shapes. And you know what they say about the good intentions -- in the end it didn't work out very well by the looks of it.Maj.Pain007 wrote...
Can someone explain to me all the redesign that went with the game? Some characters that needed a redesign (Flemeth, and Isabella) I can understand but they totally went in different directions with EVERYTHING ELSE. Why is that?
So, about the elven remake...

And... if you think that's ugly, check Oblivion's elves. Dear [insert deity or whatever you will here]... Some dunmer in that game are just so damn horrible (Morrowind did the looks right (not quite standard fantasy elves, though close), Better Heads mod even more so)

Reminds me of:

Personally i'm not against the crazy new elves. It's refreshing that the elves don't look amazing and ethereal and sublime and basically, Tolkienian. They are after all an oppressed race, and I certainly get that feeling, and can also see where the human prejudice against them would have come from with the new aesthetic.

They sure have Tolkeinesque names though. It's not so much that they aren't pretty, there were plenty of pretty average looking elves in DA:O. It's that their proportions are just weird. And not weird in an "other species" way, weird in a "wouldn't function in reality" sort of way. I don't think they'd need to look so radically different from humans to have prejudice set on them. It's also been established that humans and elves are biologically compatible to the point of being able to have children, would they really need to look that different?

Problem is, as it's already pointed out multiple times in this very thread, the game itself repeatedly makes a point the elves are supposed to look appealing, graceful and whatnot to humans. So when they aren't, well. It makes about as much sense as would having everyone in DA2 wax lyrical about quality of elf shoes.pumpkinman13 wrote...

The books perpetuate the "humans think elves are hawt" thing as well

I think they wanted to define the difference between human and elf a little more. As in, make elves a little more than just humans with pointy ears. I agree, they overdid it a little bit, but I think I see what they were going for.
This. I welcomed it that Bioware wanted to makeover the elves, but it did go a bit far with their creation. Some of the elves look nice and some look horrid. I definitely agree they are way too skinny, but I do appreciate that Bioware tried to make them feel different from a human.
