Which is the 'good' option according to you? Not in the sense of good versus evil, but rather - what do you think/feel is the better option between the two?
* Slight spoilers?*
- To either side with the Mercs and deal with their task, thus killing someone. (Or take option B, which leads to siding with the Smugglers; Take the money and fail.)
- Or to side with the Smugglers and (with the lovely help of Aveline) get the money back without any blood having be shed?
I find myself slightly conflicted - I want to do the right thing (in my eyes not killing anyone without good reason), yet find that working with smugglers might be the 'bad' thing to do here (the achievement/trophy is called nefarious for a reason
Opinions/thoughts? Any insight as to what effect this has later on in the story?(which one gets you the more interesting quests, in your opinion?)

I don't know about later effect on the story as I'm only here myself, but I've gone through every option (I like to save prior to things like this and test every possible answer you can give and it's outcome) and the best route I see is to take option B with the mercenaries and then go the smuggler route by having Aveline give her piece. You get money and experience from having to fight the body guards, and you get positive influence from Aveline by going with the smugglers. That's also the only way you can get any sort of positive feedback. If you take a bribe from the merchant OR say you're going to outright kill the other guy, you get negative feedback. So for the immediate future, this is the best option, in my opinion.

If you do it the other way around & bully the noble for a bribe to leave him alone I think you only get 2 sovereigns out of him.
@Kushems You don't get any further quests from the mercs or smugglers after the Loose Ends quest in act 1.

Do they even have a board?
No. It's just meaningless dialogue. Side quests in DA2 are reverse fetch quests (you find the item without being told to find the item and then go to the person who's missing the item).

With that said, Athenril, as a person, isn't necessarily morally better than Meeran, since Athenril employs children to do her dangerous jobs.

At least Athenril is only asking you to collect on a debt and you can walk away without blood being spilled.
She doesn't stay that gentle.
I don't really think assassinations are a mercenary's primary job. There would be some mercenary companies that are hired to fight wars, provide protection for caravans etc. Look at the Blackstone Irregulars in DAO, they may do some shady work but not all of it would be.
