I agree that Origins had the better story and companions overall, but I think this game had some strong points as well. The Champion's story lacked the epicness of Origins, which while cliché, was still very compelling and made you think you had accomplished something great at the end of the story.

In comparison, the sequel didn't really have any epic moments to it. Lore says that the Champion is the most important figure in Thedas but I didn't get that feeling; slaying the Qunari leader pales in comparison to the Warden's killing of the Archdemon and ending the Blight, and you don't really get to experience the Mage revolt in Thedas, you just listen to Varric and Cassandra discuss it.

Still, this game had a few things going for it. It was a very personal story which had some very unexpected turns. I was completely shocked when I finished the Deep Roads and discovered that Bethany had been corrupted. Same deal with finding out what happened to your mother. I think those were very deep moments and the game delivered big time. And what about Anders' little act with the Chantry? I don't think anyone was expecting that!

And there were some very interesting characters here as well. Varric was great (particularly when he was recounting to Cassandra his confrontration with his brother and the exagerated portion came into play again), Merril was charming, I enjoyed Cassandra (she was horribly underused), and the humor between Aveline and Isabella was great. Overall, there was some fantastic banter between all characters and made me wander aimlessly in Hightown just so I could listen to it.

TLDR; not as good as Origins, but still had some wonderful moments that made the experience worthwhile.

yes, that aspect of storytelling is something that DA:O could of used a little more of...   a few unexpected and shocking twists that leave you feeling sort of shattered...   but that's only one aspect of story, there are so many that are missing in this episode...   but it's still a good game - already on my second character now..   lol

So gathering all ingrediants for an herbalist relates to you rescuing a captured women, or klling qunari who rebelled, or helping your companions with their own problems. Yeah, those sound really connected.

This was the story for each act, plainly obvious, since you know, they were listed under "Main Quests" in the game.

Act 1: Gather money, this is the only time I would say that side quests are part of the story. But it is weak, Act 1 is nothing but gather 50 gold. That is a terrible way to design a game.

Act 2: The Qunari. At this point I was thinking oh cool, here we go, this is the story. End of Act 2 Qunari leave.

Act 3: Mages vs Templars. Wait, so the Qunari weren't the main story?

The Main Story was hawkes rise to power. But everything was so disjointed that it does not make a good story. A story needs a protagonist and either an antagonist or some sort of problem that has a crisis moment. Act 1 had no antagonist and no problem. Act 2 and 3 both had different antagonists, different problems.

But in my opinion, for a story that revolves around an action game, there was no urgency until the last 20% of the game.

First No A Story Dosent Need an antagonist, especaily not in a story like this

Second almost all of the Compaing quests conected to the main plot, its not Disjointed, It just dosent follow a linear straight line like most stories in video games do, it wasnt like the first one  were  they  go, "Here these guys are evil fo kill them", this is a story about people, people and their lives are what drove the plot.

Read my post again, I said an antagonist OR some sort of problem that has a crisis moment

you  had 2

Mage Vs Templar was arecruign theme through out the entire game, its not like it was sudenly just "there"

I'm 13 hours in. I've been making money for the last ten hours so i can go to the Deep Roads to make more money because if I have money then I have money, which is what I want. Money. But I've been spending all my money, so I'm still no where close to 50 gold.

You'll realize by the end what the main plot is. It was there all along. That's awesome.

Personally, I liked the non-traditional story that they told. The fact that there isn't one cliche' always evil, always the bad guy character for you to oppose. I spent more time sitting there staring at the screen trying to make a decision than I have in any other Bioware game. This is largely because the choices were not good/ evil.

^Yes. Though I agree with those pining for some purpose in Act 1, everything really culminates in Act 3. Just muscle through.

That did happen to me in Dragon Age: Origins - I spent a lot of time thinking about the werewolf and the anvil of the void decision. I'm not very far in Dragon Age 2, but I don't thinkin difficult grey decisions were lacking in origins.

Oddly enough it reminded me a lot of KotOR II, which is good in my book, since that's my favorite game.(the restored version anyway)

Actually, you know, I love the Sims games and I totally make up my own story there. My issue with Dragon Age II more has to do with the fact that there's so many -inevitable- story turns. I replayed and replayed DAO because I wanted to see how things would be different if I did *this* instead of *that*. But from what we can tell, certain things WILL ALWAYS happen in DAII. Several of them not necessary to the plot, even, but just because they didn't feel like giving us a way to avoid it. As for the things that had to happen for the plot, it's possible to still have them happen and still have everyone think your party was to blame for it even if you actually talked them off the ledge. You have Varric there telling the 'true' story. Cassandra believes a lot of incorrect things. So why not just go, well, yes, THAT HAPPENED, and everyone thought it was because of ____, because ____ wanted to do it and had prepared to so all the clues pointed to them. But in reality, Hawke had stopped their plans, it was really done by this other crazy person.

That one, right there.  That too is my biggest problem with the game.
I think a lot of the time in D-Age 2 you don't actually have a CHOICE
but you certainly have the illusion of choice when it comes to some very
big aspects.  Pretty much the ending of every chapter is going to end
up the same way.

Bethany:  You get back if you leave her, Templar found her.  Circle mage.
No anders with you while you go into the Deep Roads?  She dies.
Anders is with you?!  She becomes a Grey Warden.
-----------
You lose her no matter what you do.  Which is annoying.
----------
Qunari leader?  Fight him one on one, or with your group.
----------
Last
chapter?  You are FORCED to pick a side.  There is no option for peace,
or to do your own thing and let them rip each other's throats out.

The choices get harder as the game goes on, with practically none in act 1.

DAO was better on many accounts clearly. I knew from the start I wasnt going to enjoy this game as much for 1: Has nothing to do with the first game. So it wasnt gonna pick up where it left off from the first game. Sure flemmeth saves you, you revive her from a fragment of her soul, and she pulls a midnight creeper on sandals but nothing is explained. I need closure. And all DA2 did was give me more unanswered questions. So Im going nuts right now because I feel like bioware just screwed me in ass and told me to get the F out. 2: No orgins story concept. Meaning you couldnt play a dalish elf, city elf, dwarf noble, dwarf no caste, mage, human noble or a stable boy through the many unique story plots that those had to offer. DA2 youre just the champion and thats it. You already knew the ending you just didnt know how you became one. Nor could you alter that in any way. 3: Companions were ok. Varric was by far the best. I dont know why people didnt like alister however you spell his name. I thought he was a well made character and the part at the end if you choose to make him a king and he yells at you afterwards for doing it. That made me feel terrible. Ha I literally looked down slide my foot from side to side and said I feel like s*** now. I felt more with DAO characters than I do with DA2 characters. There was only two parts like that in DA2 that made me feel something for the characters. When bethany died, I was like "I should have listen to mother!" and what anders did at the end. All the other characters I couldnt really care less for. You got the ****, the ******, mage hater, and the clueless elf. Oh and the prince who reminds whole lot like the rogue acher dude from DAOA. The whole family background and the grandfather and the family bow. Sure they talked more during quest but I'll the camp site convesation from the first game any day. You got to know more about them and their past. It was very limited in DA2. Ha and the gift giving in DA2 was uneventful to me. Not to mention the similar dialogue like "Do you know what this means?" 4: Side quest and those other type of quest were a joke. You find a item you give it to a person and youre done. Only dialogue script was "Check your purse" blah blah. Seriously bioware? Ha why even bother with that crap. Talk about lasy. They just give you a codex and everything is sugar and rainbows. 5: The massive copying and pasting that bioware did in this game. This really bothers me. Having to explore the same crap 7 times is not fun. Im not a simple mind person. I get bored really fast if I have to repeat the same crap over and over again. The lack of designs worries me for futue bioware games. I perfered the DAO darkspawn model too. And did anyone notice that their really were only two types of darkspawns? Granted this game wasnt focused around darkspawn but still. The lack of content is extremely noticable. I feel like this is a halfassed expansion. They should have named this game DA Champion of Kirkwall really. And Im also wondering why I paid 60 bucks for 30 to 40 dollar game. And people keep saying their was no good or evil how is that true? Did he save Kirkwall from good people? Did he become the champion of Kirkwall by stopping the good qunarri people? There was plenty of good and evil choices in the game. And instead of one major threat you had two minor ones. So I disagree with the people who says DA2 is better than DAO every way. Youre blind if you can see the lack of content and laziness that was put into this game. Ha and I apologize for the bad spelling, grammer, and long post. :) Oh yeah did anyone noticed, assuming you didnt kill him, zavran in the final battle with the knight commander? I was fighting and suddenly see this piece of crap of poorly render, hardly any detail, and bad shading green armor of a character fighting next to me. So I pause and took look and it was him. Where the hell did he come from and why? He didnt bother to say hello nor goodbye.Ha pretty damn sneaky if it wasnt for the ****** poor armor design he was wearing.

I like the evolving life story theme where you sort of stumble into greatness rather than thrust upon you. DA:O story was too cliched at least this was somewhat different. There doesn't have to be a big bad at the end of every game.

after beating it i thought it was better than DA:O in terms of story and character development. not saying DA:O is bad ora nything mind you.

but the character DEVELOPMENT is really where DA2 shines, instead of just beating out all the backstory of each character, they actually grow and change over time. watching relationships grow was great.

DA:O's story was a bit too cliched and generic. i mean the darkspawn and archdemon have no real motivation other than kill everything. its story would have been better if it focused on loghain rather than the blight, hell lose the blight completely.

Act1 of DA2 is a bit slow, its mostly about meeting everyone and rising to power by doing dirty work for your deep roads trip.

after tha the game opens up significantly with vastly interesting dynamic issues that plague the city and world. its alot more, there is no clear good or bad at anytime in the game. its all shades of grey. i flip flopped like 5 times trying to decide who i was going to support. its great that the game can do that.

The thing with DA 2 is that it was never meant to be a repeat of the first game. You don't fight some evil dragon god of doom or stop a horde of evil corpses from taking over the world. It's all about the choices one makes in life. Besides, they leave it at a cliffhanger intentionally so they can further the story with either a sequel or DLC. The story may not be as epic as the first game but it's one part of a larger story. What? Did you think everyone in the series' setting were fighting darkspawn and archdemons? The answer is no.

I agree with most people here.

The story was alright, but I loved how epic the story of DA:O was, and this one pales in comparison.

I found myself wanting to progress only because I thought the story would actually go somewhere and eventually grow into something epic. However, in the end I just found myself wanting more.

P.S. I love Leliana, glad she was in this game.

For me the problem with the story was not so much the story itself but how it was presented to me and me experiencing it.

In the beginning I have a rush for survival so you don't get to learn your origins with my family as much as I should to care about them. Then the next thing I'm in a new city with no extra development about my family yet but I learn that my mother is suppose to be rich. I get having act 1 being all about side quests as it helps me learn the city lay-out. With a simple plot of getting enough money for the cross roads to get rich to provide for my family. I mean I'm expecting this it's the beginning of game. I'm sure the plot is going to expand slowly as I play to reach this goal. But no 12 hours later I've done my 100th side quest, met some knew people but nothing significantly new to the story. Though I keep hearing about this Merrideth person, got to watch out for her, and I'm left wondering do I have enough money yet I don't want to do anymore of these boring side quests I've seen all these dungeons and enemies and want to start seeing the new stuff so I can learn more about How I become an awesome champion. And hopefully get to visit many new places (boy was I wrong about that).

Act 2 comes finally and I get it. This games story is more about politics and about a rise to power for myself in this city and probably how I go about the Mages and Templar's. But whats with the concern about these Qunari are they the threat to the city and the people need me as a leader to defeat them. I'll find out later back to side quest. Well now I'm happy I did the boring side quest in act 1 cause they all lead to cool story driven side quest in act 2 that I wouldn't have gotten if I hadn't and all of them are related to the tensions between Templar's and Mages (except for the lilly killer). And now I have to fight the leader of the Qunari (wait already) I kill him and now I'm champion (again wait already). That was so much shorter than Act 1 I mean I got a lot of story but little game-play out of it.

It's Ok it's Act 3 it's going to have the most action packed game-play with awesome story building for the tension between the Mages and the Templars. Wait a minute all the stuff has already hit the fan and I got to make these choices with new information I wasn't expecting (awesome). Make a choice game-over. What that was it.

Sorry for the long post but my point was the story is not necessarily the problem. It's the fact that you have to play a fps campaigns worth of game-play before you get to it. Plus it's not balanced either, Act 1 is the longest to play but has the least amount of story. Act 2 less game play but much more plot development. Act 3 Least amount of game play with more story than Act 1.

As a video game I paid full price for, I was disappointed that in order to get to me to the stuff I wanted to keep playing. I had to keep telling myself get your moneys worth. Once in Act 2 I didn't have to tell my self that cause I actually felt that I did. And now on my second playthrough Act 1 doesn't seem that long to me.

Why does Hawke want to go to the Deep Roads so badly? I am having difficulty gauging he and his sister's motivation for wanting to do that. Apparently, it had something to do with money - but why can't they continue working for the Red Irons, then?

So they can move out of there Uncles Shack and live decently, the deep roads expediction promises great wealth so they can support there family. The Red Iron mercenaries can't offer that kind of money or freedom.

Yet somehow it's perfectly ok to share what you like about it before finishing it?

I agree with OP, it was hard to care about anything, especially in the first act... i'm going to the deep roads to do what now? Why do i want to make my home in Kirkwall? unlike some MMO,  i can't chose my own adventure and take on some random profession, i need to go along the linear preset paths towards some illusive goal i've yet to understand, want, or care about.

In fact... the "story" didn't actually kick in until the end of Act2, by then i was already 26 hours into the game burned out on grinding quests. Working towards a goal does help especially when the game is as linear as this... instead i dont have an overarching goal... just the fact that i know i will be champion, of something.

The DA2 plot has allot of different threads that all sort of tie together at the end. Your doing something important for the main plot by going into the deep roads, you just won't learn what until later.

Nothing wrong with sewing multiple threads... but it somehow has to present some purpose or goal that one could actually care about in the interim. Coming from a hindsight persepective i still find it hard to care about anything that went on in the first act, in fact... i would be glad to have a "skip act 1" like the skip the fade mod for origins. You can't really talk to your companions... maybe a conversation or two and thats it!. You're set on a boring linear path and you can't even explore your own companions.
