Yea he doesnt even look like a dwarf without a beard. What kind of Dwarf uses a crossbow and is agile??????

He looks like a perfume wearing pimp or a 'player.' No sign that he actually enjoys it underground, rocks or an axe. It's sacrilege.

I think it's mostly a matter of the DA team wanting to express individuals who don't fall into the stereotyping trap of most high-fantasy games.
Fenris is a another good example, as he's a lanky elf who prefers get into the thick of it with a massive two-hander.
Personally, I enjoy it. I like characters that are unique, but Aveline kind of irks me slightly.
