In Origins, I basically disabled tactics completely. Nobody did anything unless I gave the command. This included everything, even movement. When I gave the command for a companion to attack a target they did so until the target died. At that point the companion would do nothing until I gave them a new command.
So far I have been unable to get this type of behavior from my companions in DA2. There does not seem to be an overall "disable tactics completely" button for each comapnion like there was in Origins. So, what I have been doing is unchecking all of the tactics slots but, it seems that the companion beahvior is still dictated by the category or role that they have assigned to them. These categories were tank, defender, ranged, cautious, aggressive, etc.. None of these seemed to cause the behavior I was hoping for.
I could get a companion to not move unless I told them to but, that seemed to also cause them to not autoattck. I would issue them an attack command and they would swing their sword once and then stop. I would change to another category and they would now to continue to attack targets but, they would select targets and move on their own w/o specifc orders from me. Very frustrating.
So if anyone out there has figured out how to make companions work like they did in Origins with the tactics disabled (or if I just completley missed something) please let me know how you set it all up. Thanks.
