I romanced Merril and found it disappointing. (I still loved the game nonetheless) I can't be sure if this holds true for all accounts, but it much felt like all I had to do was sleep with her and then wait for the game to be over.
The companion quest didn't feel like it built off that at all, and the allusions towards our romance couldn't have been more disappointing. The only thing that comes to mind is when Merril called me some dalish word, Anders saying we shouldn't be dating, and Varric's final tack on. I would have loved an affection option like in the party camp in DA:O.
Maybe if there was a feature, or some kind of "minor" quest to make them feel more comfortable in the mansion (something that could have been done for any LI) I would have been more content with how it was set up the way it was, but as of now... all I am is kind of disapointed.
P.S.- All I've seen was the romance with Merrill, if the other LI's had more substance I would appreciate a mention.
P.S.S- I am fully aware that Bioware games aren't dating similators, but this was a feature I really enjoyed in DA:O, and I'm kind of sad to see it take a step backwards
I fully agree. Also romanced Merril, and though the overall relationship was sweet, it lacked substance. Or even allusion. I figured a shemlan woman dating a banished Dalish apostate would come with some sort of, you know, consequence. It didn't. And we were together for three years, but that was no big deal. Anytime I wanted to talk with her, all I got was, "I think somebody's
watching me."
It just ruins the immersion when not much happens on account of your choice. You're apparently the most important person in the city, yet no one cares who you've been sharing a bed with for three years? If only IRL celebrities had it so easy. The subjects of cross-racial and lesbian relationships and what they mean in this fictional soceity weren't addressed at all, nor was the idea of having an heir, or how a marriage could work, if it was necessary, what Dalish customs were and how they conflicted with humans'...
There is SO much meat there to expand a romance and make it something meaningful. Instead we got "moving in" and a kiss at the end. Granted, I liked the thought behind a goodbye kiss, but it didn't carry much weight because the results of your chosen mate didn't carry much either. There was no immersion.
