I don't know why everyone's hating on the GPS.
I've been playing my Vanguard solely with it and it never let me down. To each his own i suppose, but admittedly its quite different from the other shotguns in the game. The Arc & Velocity reminds me of the Half life 2 Crossbow, fully charge it can remove enemy protection over a significant distance. Which, if timed correctly ,can be shot prior to the Biotic charge for maximum effect. Close range isn't an issue if you don't mind finishing off targets with melee once in a blue moon. Preferably , if you get used to the orb trajectory, you should charge the flanks and have each orb hit different targets, pushing the damage through the roof.
Its different but i prefer it to the claymore. Although i only tried the claymore on my Soldier, perhaps i should have a go at it with the vanguard.
The GPS has a delayed reaction upon firing, thereby making it a use efficient close quarter weapon of choice. Moreover, devoid of a charged shot, it has an inferior DPS in comparison to the Claymore. It is arguably more forgiving despite the aforementioned setback but depletes ammunition relatively fast. Ultimately I qualm with it is that delay in between shots.
My weapon of mass destruction is and will remain my beloved Claymore. The reload trick may be unforgiving and I question the integrity of its design but when it does work, it is monstrous.

Claymore FTW.
+1.
There's just something totally fun about that gun. Maybe it's the epic sound or the effect of the recoil but I love it so, so much.

I do not hate the GPS - I just do not like it because it does not suit my style.
1 ) No loud explosive sound.
2 ) It fires on "Mouse Up" aka the Delay.
Unlike other Shorguns that fires when you press the mouse button, GPS fires when you release the mouse button because holding the button down means charging the weapon.

5 best shotguns of all time?
Claymore, Claymore, Claymore, Claymore and Claymore.
It's rather unforgiving, as far as missed shots go/and the reload trick, but you should be able to get it with some practice. When you do, that's when the real fun starts.
This was my experience of the claymore. First time I took it I hated it, restarted the collector ship mission and took AR instead, with by the way is awesome with the mattock and area reave. With my next vanguard I decided to learn to use it rather than dismiss it altogether and it worked out well. Even made a claymore soldier right after!
Before it's available though, eviscerator is my weapon of choice that thing is brutal at point blank range.

And I use the GPS on Adepts and Sentinels only.

The Geth Shotty wouldn't fit my playstyle & feel. I haven't given the others enough of a real chance to get a good feel for ....

Perhaps I'm more confortable with these kind of weapons.
I tend to see the "mouse up" firing mechanism as a plus given the opportunity to keep a shot that would have otherwise missed it's target.
Oddly enough I think the "No loud explosion sound" is a far better argument. Vanguard is all about style and i can see why some would prefer this kind of set up. I just have this nagging feeling that the claymore hype is just praise on the bandwagon. There is nothing wrong with that . Hell, you can play through the whole thing with the starting weapons , i just think the GPS dismissal can give the wrong impression ; That the Vanguard is limited to Claymore only.
Anyways it doesn't really matters, as long as you're having fun.

The result was pretty anti-climatic, for me at least: it makes no difference whatsoever, I went trough the levels with pretty much the same speed, killed single enemies and large groups in the same amount of time, taking similar damage, died in the same places due to tactical mistakes etc.
Only difference was that the Claymore has the advantage of killing with a single shot+elbow, while the Scimitar's higher rate of fire makes timely staggering of enemies easier, keeping you safe.
Bottom line is it doesn't really matter which gun you use, if you can use it, you will destroy eveything.

Without Squad Cryo, I've really had to pick my battles. For the platforms on the collector ship, I had to stay in cover and use the Locust. The charging was too bugged and even where I could do it, the Scions were eating me alive while I was dealing with Harbinger and other collectors.
My new rule is Claymore with Squad Cryo, Evi and Scimitar otherwise.

I went ahead and took the Claymore for this run. I'm playing on Xbox and sacrificed Squad Cryo for Shockwave and took Area Reave as a bonus. I think in this case I would be better off with the Scimitar. You can one shot mooks but bosses and mini bosses require several shots from the Claymore.

I normally play without squad cryo and don't usually miss it. My current playthrough is the first one I've used with Squad Cryo and honestly it doesn't do too much for me. I won't say that there weren't times that it was useful but overall I'd rather have another skill.

I did a Mattock Vanguard a while ago, and.. it was a bit TOO good, I think. I ended up using it almost exclusively.
Next time I'll stick with the Vindicator.
