Hopefully someone will make a small mod so we can either tell it to leave or kill it. I thought it was supposed to be a trained warhound that was highly intelligent. Its constant barking makes it seem more like retarded cannon fodder for the front line.
Also was there a way to get rid of or avoid keeping him playing as a human noble or did I miss it.

That's so wierd. Even after reading these complaints and paying attention, I can't really hear him bark. Is this a console thing, or something in the options?Luchaire wrote...

He's not even loud enough to be noticeable at any distance other than standing next to him.
Maybe it depends on your system or settings or something. But in my game, he's loud enough to almost completely drown out conversations with Zevran, Alistair, or Leliana when in camp. Sort of kills the mood when trying to romance these people.

(Pet Dog)
(Castrate Dog to shut him up)
Yeah... that could work

Personally it drives me nuts - you are supposed to be having an intimate conversation with someone in camp and all you can hear apart from them talking is this BARK BARK BARK in the background. I have no problem with it barking at any other time, and in fact it seems to make no bloody noise at all at other times.
I got the dog because I thought it would be fun to have it find things and interact with the others, but this barking during camp conversations makes me want to kill it. It really spoils the fun totally.
If they MUST have it do this (yeah like a highly trained war dog can't even shut up when you're talking?) then it should be able to be dropped from the party like other members.
I did download Luchaire's fix, but it still barks a bit. I thought the barking counted as 'speech' but when I turned down the 'sound effects' volume it seems to have shut the thing up. Hoorah! Slightly annoying not to be able to have the ambient background sounds of camp like the fire crackling but 100% better than barking dog.
Just annoying that we should have to do this though.

Perhaps some sound systems bring out the barking more than others....
Thats the problem I think.
I have a 5.1 surround system and the dogs barking did become very noticeable when trying to talk to other members in the camp.
Perhaps it's not so bad on just a stereo speaker setup?
Hopefully the mod posted here will help. Thanks for posting the link.

And he DOES bark over a lot of conversations. And for those of you who say "Dogs bark, it's what they do", consider TheDAS. He's letting every darkspawn in Ferelden know exactly where the hell you are. I'm uncountably glad that Luchaire did something to even lessen it

Get a roommate with a very forceful unfixed cat that is in heat for about 10 days every week.
You'll not even notice the dog after that.

I fiddle with sound settings a lot in games, especially in DA:O. At the beginning I couldn't hear battle yells over sounds of explosions, so I'm happy there's adjustment bars for everything in the options. Dog's barking is actually set as a sound effect and is NOT a voice, so all you need to do is turn down the sound effect. It's amazing to hear a conversation without barking in the background. Kinda makes me realize Dog adds atmosphere in the game once I turn it off, even if his barking is more on the incessant side despite the idle animation time.

Too extreme...it turns down ALL sounds except for dialogue and music.
Nope......imho that is not an option.
I'll stick with the mod

Yeah, I know all the sound effects are dropped, but since I'm using an unmoddable console version turning down the sound is my only option.

Dogs that bark all the time are retarded, or should I say their owners are. I'm more of a cat person myself, but my friend has bullmastiff and although that dog may be quite hugely large, it doesn't bark, ever. Also it doesn't lick you all over your body and crotch etc., it just shiffs you and looks you in the eyes to say hello. Now that's a proper dog, not some untrained loudmouth ultra annoying beast that they put in the game. Bah!
