As has been mentioned, the Elves, Dwarves, and Qunari all recieved an art change. Therefore, it made sense for Zevran to look different, and if we had seen others (Oghren, Sten, etc), I would have been fine with their change to the new style.
But the humans look the same. Nathaniel and Liliana still look perfect. Why did Alistair's face shrink, chin become less chiseled, and all around look like a different person. What happened there? Can't wait for the mod that fixes it...

Poor Alistair. It was nice to see him anyway.

Maybe it's the water in Denerim. Teagan looked like he got slapped in the face with a parasite-laden trout and then was healed by a blind blood mage.

I guess all that cheese was catching up to him.

Teagan didn't look too bad (certainly not great though). Or maybe I was too busy gaping at the horror that is Alistair's mug to notice it.
But Cullen puts them all to shame. Seeing him come out relatively unscathed just makes no excuse for everyone else.

I won't come across Leliana or Zevran in my first run through this game(I'm not done yet).
I carried over my first playthrough of DAO which is why.
Lilly died back in Lothering on my first playthrough of DAO and Zevran betrayed me.
So Alistair's all I've got. And its not a good change of appearance.

And the comparison picture of Alistair in DAO and in DA2 is enough to solidify my opinion.

I will never say the graphics are an improvement, at least not regarding characters.

I'm not saying that your point is invalid. I just prefer the new art style.
I however, can find some agreement with you in that the characters look a little "off." I feel that they should have aged a bit, seeing as they pop up 10 years later. I'm not ENTIRELY sure that the main characters in The Hawke Chronicles age, I thought I saw some wrinkles on Isabella's face near the end of the act, and (male default) Hawke does seem a little more ragged than at the game's beginning.
Either way, I don't find the somewhat minor differences in appearance particularly detrimental to my game experience. BW did that in other ways

People age; they gain or lose weight and develop wrinkles. Alistair having a rounder face after eight or so years on the throne is par for the course. Just how different does Teagan look compared to his Origins appearance, though?
Teagan looks like someone broke his nose a few times since Origins, for one thing. The poor Bann-Hammer... his fangirls will not be pleased.
I too was disappointed by Alistair's appearance. I can justify it as just aging and softer living, but DAMN, bro! It's especially jarring when Cullen got quite sexy compared to his Origins model. Quite sexy indeed.

In the long shots, Alistair doesn't appear to be heavy, so why would his cheeks be that round? Why are his eyes smaller? And where did his Theirin nose go?
Plus, most people's appearance doesn't change much between early to mid-20s and early to mid-30s. I could understand him looking a little softer and developing a few more wrinkles, but that's just...not Alistair. Maybe the Grey Wardens replaced him with a doppelgänger when he went to Weisshaupt Fortress.
So, in summary: Bad Bioware! No cookie!

What gives?
Alistair looks NOTHING like he did in DAO, and it seems that other than the main characters(which look great) all other characters that aren't significant look terrible.
What is going on? I'm afraid to see what they've done to other characters from DAO.
Thoughts? Reassurances? Give me something.
Well... It has been 8 years since the Blight... I imagine he would change some..
