I am planning to use a 2h warrior as a versatile character, meaning I want to be able to play with or without Aveline. Is is a viable option to taunt+ reaver talents with healer support to wreak havok or is a classic sword and shield build necessary?

If you're playing normal, you'll be fine. If you're playing a difficulty above that, you need to make sure other party members can make up for what you lack.

There's people who play on Nightmare with a 2h tank, but the impression I get is that if you go that route Improved Stoneform is a must have.

I think he means Bulwark, the upgrade to Stonewall. Mages can help out a bit with Heroic Aura, Arcane Wall and Healing Aura.

honestly I've been doing playthroughs on nightmare without tanks, without healers, you name it. As long as you have good strategy and efficient builds with what you are using almost anything is viable. And on nightmare a 2H warrior (it doesn't even need to be a tank) is very viable. My 2H warrior is completely offensive with vanguard, 2H tree, and reaver and is the only "tank" in the party with varric and 2 mages. Stonewall is crucial for the 2H'er like he said earlier, and one of the biggest uses for it is you can block enemy assassins' deadly stealth attacks, and then proceed to mowing down enemies. On difficulties below that it will definitely be fine as your 2H won't even need to worry about friendly fire.

Didnt need Stonewall in my 2HW Vanguard playthrough. Following the Ultimate Vanguard thread's build, which is 100% offense. Same role in team.

You really don't need anything from the Defender tree. Or the Warmonger tree. You really only need two non-spec trees: Vanguard and your weapon tree. The rest go into your specs. Maybe a couple of one-point wonders like Second Wind, but otherwise there's not a whole lot you need to ask for, anyways.

The only tanking skills you need is taunt and stonewall. Anything else is just fluff and/or useless for tanking. Going the traditional tank builds in DA2 is rather pointless since damage is so much better for threat and simply eliminating the threats before they can do any serious damage.

It is possible indeed, however, you will do much better at mitigating damage in trade for only a bit less damage if you roll with Sword and Shield.
I've been tanking Nightmare with AreleX's Berserker/Reaver/Vanguard build while doing damage like a beast. I recommend investing some points into Defender and Warmonger to get Taunt and the upgraded Stonewall.
If you wanna roll 2h, i'd say take aveline into your group, use varrics goad (via tactics) on her and build her talents not all around mitigation, but more around offense.

On my 1st playthrough (on hard) i was tanking all the way with a 2h Reaver/Berserker build, so it is indeed possible, but not 100% optimal.

The big problem comes if you play on nightmare (which is really where the 2h warrior builds shine) because you cannot have more than 1 melee without a damn lot of micromanagement or some really clever tactics setups. Even a fully tank specced avaline is going to get insta gibbed if she ends up in the wrong place near a 2h reaver/zerker with FF. With cleave and a chunk of health lost i regularly see 7-800 damage swings

I beat DA2 nightmare with 2H warrior. Completely offensive setup as vanguard, with only tanking skill being elemental aegis and reavers consume skill (which seems to benefit from the 100% damage bonus you get in vanguard tree).

Your damage output is so huge, most AI will attack you by default, but have varric running goad on you.

You can tank with a 2h warrior with any build, holding arrgo is easy, you take more damage than a S&B but you kill enemy a lot faster and dead enemy damage = 0. Only problem is that you really really need to watch where you swing, you can 1-2 shot most of your companion.

I finished the game on hard with a 2-handed Reaver tank.

Wasn't hard at all. Didn't even fully spec into my Vanguard tree but fully speced into the Reaver tree.

I love playing this character, but I'm really irritated right now that even with tactics turned off, I still end up killing my party members more than enemies do.  If I wasn't so neurotically dedicated to playing through with Isabella and Aveline (I'd go all female NPCs but Merril has no healing capability so I'm stuck with Anders after B died), I'd drop them both and switch to Merril and Varric.  Or, Sebastian and Varric.

To make playing this character the most fun on nightmare, you probably want to have all ranged rest of party, a healer (Anders) so you don't have to take many or any defensive abilities, and a good chunk of your mage's abilities should probably be party buffs, enemy debuffs (harder with Anders), and crowd control.

Any party is doable, but the level of micro management I'm doing is reducing the fun factor.  Also probably doubling the time required for my first playthrough.
