Yay!!! An official thread!

Liked: Graphics were a lot better in this game, major improvement. The battle system and inventory system were a lot easier to use. The dialogue wheel was a nice add-on because I was able to see directly what my conversions effect were. The climaxes like Flemeth coming back to life, Isabella coming back to do the right thing and fighting to save her, your mother dying in a somewhat crazy way were excellent story plots in my opinion.

Disliked: Lack of character dialogue and interaction! This really disappointed me. I loved how in Dragon Age you could go up to your party members and interact with them in the camp and kiss them whenever you wanted. I also love how the missions were very personal like saving Morrigan's life or getting her a mirror because Flemeth broke hers when she was young. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring the options you had in DA:O in DA3. Also, what made ME2 so good was having the people you got to know in ME1 returning in ME2 and getting to know them even better! Yes, you had missions for the characters and they had somewhat interesting stories (I love when Isabella comes back with the book), but because I couldn't interact with them like I could if they were in real life it made me not really care. Especially my romantic option-- I felt NOTHING.Also, more Morrigan and Flemeth! I feel that you guys are kinda building this up, but I really wanted to find out what happened to my Warden and Morrigan as well as their child.

Story: It wasn't too bad, but I hated how most of the game took place in the same place with the same maps and dungeons. It got old pretty fast. I also finished the game going "who cares about the champion, why are they connected to the Wardens disappearance? It kinda ended when the story was just beginning with me. Yes, it's a sequel, but you guys made ME2 lol.

In DA3 please allow us to play with older characters, allow us to talk and interact with members in our party, and do not limit the story to a town. Answer and let us interact with Morrigan again!!! Overall it was a good game, not as good as DA:O for the things I listed. (Apparently the ratings from sites and magazines also show this). Good job! But please take my and others opinions seriously so DA:3 is epic!!! :)

I'm not far into the game but so far I adore Bethany as a character but I really miss Morrigan and Alistair to be honest. The combat is amazing - it's definitely less strategical but kind of makes up for it by being faster and more visceral. I hate the fact that my companions dont wear armor like Hawke does - I enjoy mixing and matching gear, it's part of what makes rpgs fun. I imagine this was done to sell DLC outfits but meh.

Those are my only observations atm but I'll update later.

Update 1: I just got to the part where Bethany, the only character I liked, is no longer available. Not happy. Now I'm stuck with a bunch of guys that hit on me and a dirty pirate lady. *sighs* I really don't know what to think at this point. I had such high expectations after Origins and maybe that's my fault but I can only hope that the story improves and the characters start being more interesting and less creepy soon. I'll update later.

Update 2: I'm pretty far into the game now which has turned out to be what seems like one sidequest after the next. No main plot to speak of.. just sort of an aimless and directionless mess. The companions are still annoying although the dwarf has grown on me - it's apparant why he's telling the story: He's the only interesting companion left after Bethany's disappearance. I've heard the game finishes strong but at this point I dont think it could possibly make up for what has been, thus far, Bioware's worst game ever.

I'm not sure why David Gaider allowed his name to be attached to this train wreck of an RPG. I remember DAO being praised as the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. It was. DA2 is not in the same league. It's a major step backwards - especially in the story and dialogue department.

And I'm sick of the gross dialogue options I can make towards other guys. I was told once I tell a guy NO - it meant I wasn't interested. You lied. The options still appear and they still make flirty comments. I don't mind gay content but Bioware has slammed people in the face with it in DA2 to the point where it's a joke. I'm glad less than 2% of the possible gamers out there will be happy because I'm sure I'm not alone in the 98% of gamers that felt beyond uncomfortable. I liked Zevran, he was a good character and when I told him no - it stuck.

And what is with the locations? In DAO I was going all over the place to new and interesting places. It was beautiful and diverse... In DA2 I feel like I've been going through the same 4 or 5 locations over and over and over. Where is the EPICness that DAO had? Where is the heart? Ugh..

I'll be back for my final update when I finish the game. I've heard the game gets better. I hope it does.

Final update: After researching some of the issues, I've come to the conclusion that the game was rushed by EA and that blaming Bioware is a little unfair. I don't agree with some of the design decisions but DA2 is not a bad game - it's just not what people have come to expect from Bioware. I don't think there's much more that can be said. It's just a sad situation.

I for one purchased two pc editions so I could have them on different computers when my grandsons come over that way they can both play at the same time. I did that with DA:O also. Overall as a hack and slash big explosion mass blood carnage game its fine. That part of the graphics engine is also very good. Linear paths not so good.....character graphics skins etc......really not good......everytime I get a close up of someone it looks like there face is going to shatter into small fragments. and for cryin out loud the dalish look like freakin aliens.........I guess thats why they live in an alienage....(sorry bout that).....overall it seems to be an entertaining game but limited in overall quality leaving me to rate it as.

VERY DISAPPOINTING  ....comparing it to the quality of DA:O.....not even close.......

I will continue to play it as it is enjoyable as I said as a game but if your looking for something deeper, dont get your hopes up.

The best way I can explain the difference is with DA:O I couldn't get off the computer until I was so tired I had to get some sleep and with DA2 it will take me longer to finish it because I am not in any hurry to get back to it. I will continue to play it but at a much less enthusiastic rate.

Hi Chris, thank you for this opportunity to provide meaningful feedback.
I am a fan of DA:O, ME1, ME2 and KOTOR all of which I give strongly positive reviews.
I am displeased with DA:II on PC (below are the negatives) it was not fun for me. The low budget and the approach of gearing the game toward consoles produced an epic fail. (no Tool set wtfOMgFAIL)
1. Shockingly disappointed beginning with character creation
  • Recycled hair styles from DA:O used in DA:II character creation (this is especially awful because the modding community has already produced a vast number of beautiful hairstyles for DA:O available through mods)
  • Tattoos from DA:O were re-used in DA:II and not improved upon
  • -No freedom to choose race
  • Only 3 classes
  • Unable to customize default Hawke face (can't even change his eye color)
  • I went from my first playable experience as hawke being totally awesome, high level with skills/spells/armor to being 100% useless and weak in a span of 2 minutes...this approach made me feel like playing my low level pathetic hawke was lame.
2. Uninspired introduction to game (I didn't care about Hawke's family)
  • Hawke's family didn't seem interesting to me, at all, except for bethany who was actually kinda hot and interesting but my sister...so yeah awkward...
  • Hawkes mom has the same voice as my human noble mom in DA:O...wtf?
  • DA:II failed to capture my interest from the get go, leaving me feeling unmotivated to play the game, and disinterested. Whereas, ME1, ME2 and DA:O all managed to capture my interest early and in a powerful way
3. Playing an entire game in 1 city... is failure.
  • Playing 80% of the game in the same city removed the feel of exploration and adventure (it would be like removing every location from ME2 and forcing Shepard play the entire game on the citadel, epic fail)
  • Re-used dungeons, locations etc, this is so beyond fail for many reasons but when I think back to diablo 1, even way back then they had an awesome randomized dungeon/location concept working so you never felt like you were in the same spot twice, why not use this approach?
4. Companions were much weaker than in DA:O or ME1 or ME2!
  • Maybe you set the bar too high with Morrigan, Leliana, and Alistair and shot yourself in the foot? Because these DA:II companions just don't cut it, by any standard.
  • ME1, ME2, DA:O companions blow DA:II companions out of the gaming universe
  • DA:O chatting with companions was vastly superior and more personal to DA:II approach.
  • I hated not being able to dress my companions and change their items
5. The Story is...where?
  • Hawks story is a bit uninspiring. I don't really care about Hawke or his rise to power. It feels insignifcant to me.
  • Poor story, especially compared to DA:O, ME1, ME2 etc.
The best part of playing DA:II is the comfort that at least I have Elder Scrolls: Skyrim to look forward to.

I haven't even gotten to Act 2, so consider this my initial impression.

Pros:

- I like the character creation options, and I appreciate that my little Hawke/Amell family looks sorta like me.
- The new graphics are nice.
- Flemeth frigging rocks--her voice, her animation, her costume...me likey.
- I'm fond of the new dialog wheel and the clues it provides as to how each response will sound.
- I like seeing the ways my Warden has affected the world in which Hawke now lives.
- Bethany's kinda awesome.
- I'm fond of the night/day maps. That's a great way to reuse resources while providing more content.

Cons:

- Really miss isometric view
- On the minimap during gameplay, I wish I could hover my mouse over a quest indicator or location to see which one it is, rather than having to go to the full map
- What. Did you DO. To the ELVES. They look like fish!
- Not a fan of the lack of utility in some of the female characters' gear. It's like Isabela's got targets on her femoral arteries. "Cut me here! Unprotected!"
- Not a fan of Varric telling my Hawke's story first as the default Hawke. I hear that was a decision made in order not to dump new players straight into the character generator and scare them off, but man. Cover Hawke up with a helmet and gear in the intro, then. Just...what. You know how fanatically possessive and detail-oriented people get about their custom characters, BioWare.
- On the general skill tree page, I wish I could hover over the skills *from there* without having to zoom in on each separate skill tree to see a description and compare what I might want to put points in next.

That's it so far. I am enjoying the game quite a lot. Can't wait to play it some more later.

Couldn't agree more.  The story was lacking for the entire game, and near the end is when it finally got interesting.  Then the game just ends basically.  Boss dies.  The champion left.  The End.  No closure what so ever.  The world (lol) is small, and lots of places are used many times.  Staying in Kirkwall for 90% of the game made for a boring game.  The best thing I can compare that to is Mass Effect, which does a wonderful job of making you feel like you are traveling a galaxy.  Here I felt like I had no sense of a world, no immersion.  Also the game is supposed to take place over a period of 10 years, and Bioware did a horrible job of making me feel like time has passed.  Almost nothing changed with the world, or characters.  Hawke shows no sign of age or battle scars and the like.  The city doesn't change.  I expect more from a Bioware game.

I hope DLC completes the story of the champion at the very least, and takes you to other places besides Kirkwall and the Wounded Coast.  Or if there is a DA3, then I hope that continues the story of Hawke, because it truly felt like the game was just beginning when I killed Meredith.  Lastly, I did like the way the story was being told as a narrative, but there wasn't enough of those scenes.

They should have just made this a DLC named "Kirkwall Chronicles"

*edit after 2 posts below me: sorry for posting - i realize its a "review" thread so it was late when i realized i should have posted a review instead. but unfortunately, i havent really finished the game, i felt i couldnt write a review yet (aside from some impressions of the game)

so taking from that, i hope people will still put in their reviews as i would so appreciate reading other people's thoughts about the game. I have not the intention of killing the thread with my post as this thread is important for both players and bioware themselves - developers need to listen to their customers/followers. The relationship works both ways. Thank you and once again sorry XP my bad hehe

Absolutely true, I have gotten to act 2 and my initial impressions have not changed, my only hope is that EA and Bioware have the good sense to publish a builders tool kit. This might actually save the game, if they decide not to which is there right well thats fine too. As far as DLC, after seeing the  final release I will not be buying or downloading any DLC for this game unless it is community content. That is unfortunate.

So far...

-Excellent storytelling and NPCs as always. /hats off to the writer team.

-Friendship/Rivalry system is confusing. (i.e. Accepting a fetch quest got +10 Rivalry from Carver, finish it got +5 Friendship from Varric and Isabela.)

-Spell targeting system is tricky. Playing "find the spot for your AoE spell" in the heat of battle can be annoying.

Also, because the camera cannot zoom out far enough, when fighting in small in-door areas choosing targets for AoE spell can be difficult, sometimes impossible. (i.e. When fighting in the door way, camera will be block by either the door, the wall and enemy mobs stacks ) (I will try to get a good screenshot for this.)

-There are few minor bugs in tactics. When choosing tactics right after gaining a new active ability, the new ability will not show up. And sometimes the presets (i.e. damger/scrapper) disappear.

Proofreading feedback

Mistress Selby
How to Frame a Templar

"...fortunately one is in the throws of lyrium..."
Should be throes.

It's not huge, but since just earlier in the day I had been thinking how nice it was that you had professional QA and proofreading, that homophone mixup underwhelmed me. If it's a wee thing that can be fixed when you do the inevitable patch, my inner English editor would be delighted.

Now I'm going to go back to playing and enjoying the game. I'll give real feedback when I'm done with my first playthrough.

Wonderful. Exactly what I wanted(even if no one will read this).

Starting with improvements over Dragon Age: Origins.
-Graphics: much better. It actually looks like a 360 game now, as opposed to a PS2 game. Good job Bioware! Paying your graphic designers!
-Combat: Much more involved and streamlined. Flows smoother, and is more intense/exciting/interactive (as opposed to hit A and watch). Although I can fit all of my abilities on the quick access menu. And I'm level 18. So a trade off I suppose? And one more, why is the range for Mighty Blow shorter than the basic attack for a two-handed weapon? Who else is using Mighty Blow but two-handed weapon users?
- Character design: All the races actually look different now! Elves actually look weak and frail as opposed to short humans, and Qunari look like their own race, not just a particularly ugly human.
- umm...

Things that did not get quite better from Dragon Age Origins.
- The story is the biggest issue for this game. For the type of game that Dragon Age is, and from what I expect from the company who made Mass Effect 2, this story is pretty poor. One of the problems is that I feel like i don't have a clear goal. All it seems like I'm doing, is, excuse the language, **** errands for everyone and their grandmother. Do this. Go here and do this. I could really use help going through this dungeon that looks exactly the same as every other dungeon to kill some non-descript enemies and a boss with a name that apparently was mentioned in the dialogue, but I really didn't pay attention because I was bored out of my skull listening to your asinine and banal dribble. Even past the first act, all the story is is just going from place to place, spending 10 minutes of loading time to switch from your freaking house to the hightown or whatever to run boring errands. Find a relic. Help Aveline score. Find the will. Find this. Find that. Kill these cookie cutter bosses. In Dragon Age: Origins, you had a clear goal to stop the blight. Everything you did was for recruiting allies, raising an army, stopping a traitor to the throne, and fighting a grand battle against the darkspawn and demons with all your allies that you personally went around and gathered at your back, fighting with you. Apparently, I'm the champion now. Apparently, I'm a slave, but not really because the game just told me a year has passed. In a matter of seconds. Apparently, if I take my sister into the deep roads, she dies. Oops. Apparently, my mother dies. Apparently, there is some kind of conflict between mages and templars. None of these events are done well enough to make me care. I feel so disinterested, and just want to beat people up.
- Party member interaction. It's great that they all have their own little homes that I have to systemically go visit with excessive amounts of loading time switching from place to place. It's great that if I happen to miss a gift for a character, I'm just like boned with relationships. It's great how I just get seemingly random deductions or additions to friend or rivalry, and It's great how I can't just talk to them or buy them cake and fix relationships. It's also great how I get to converse with them once every 10 hours. And get +5 friend for it. But I hate how they have more banter as I walk around. So annoying.
- What's funny, is that the fake intro to the game, that Varric is telling, is how the game should actually have started. It's intense, tons of action, you are kicking proverbial ass, and you are a bad-ass yourself. But that's an illusion! You actually are a pathetic weakling in lame looking armor, toting around a bunch of losers you call a family whom you have to continually prod along lest they sit down and cry about how much their life sucks. Not that it matters, because they all die anyways. Whoops!
- Junk. What is the point of junk? Seriously. This crap sells for like a silver each, and you can't do anything with it. So apparently they just really want you to fill up your inventory with crap that you can't use, and can only sell for a ****** poor amount of money. But it's alright because they included a sell all junk button! Which could have been avoided if they just didn't put that crap in in the first place. How about less time writing code for useless crap, literally junk, and some more time working on your story? Seriously. When Varric tells the exaggerated stories (the intro, meeting Varric's brother after the Deep roads), it's actually better and more awesome than the actual story.

But hey. Just my two cents Bioware, not that anyone actually reads any of this. End Rant.

I have to admit some of the posters are right.

This is Dragon Age: The Kirkwall Chronicles, the decent prequel/expansion pack for DA:O. Seriously, when I heard there was a sequel and how the franchise is revolving around the world of Thedas rather than a single character, I thought this will be a lot bigger in scope.
I wanted to visit Orlais, Tenvinter, and Rivia not just Kirkwall and the wastelands. This was the perfect opportunity to expand the scope of the world not minimize it! I'll even be lenient and say I wouldn't even have minded if the game focused only on Kirkwall if the BLOODY ENVIRONMENTS WERE VARIED! Sorry, cut and paste locations just annoy me like heck and the fact that we spent 90% of our time in Kirkwall and there's cut and paste locations in an already small world, it's unforgivable and badly reflects on the game and developers.
Also, what the heck happened to the character interactions? One thing that I loved about DA:O is the sheer amount of dialogue you can have with your companions anywhere and anytime. In DA: TKC, it's just one place and only that place where you can talk. At least, the banters between companions have increased despite lacking the humor and sharp wit of Origins.

Overall, a 7.5/10
I'm fine with the new combat and visuals.
Disappointed with the scope, the story, and the shallow ROLEPLAYING.

I only just got started but these are my initial impressions...

Dislikes:

1. Changes in the DLC installation procedure which prevented me from immediately playing the game as I tried to figure out how to get my DLC installed. The procedure in DAO made sense and this one does not. Why "fix" what worked well?

2. The re-fighting of the intro to start a new game. It made getting to the character creation too long and tedious. I like to experiment with my character to find out the differences in the game mechanics and to get the looks just right. This makes it  tedious to do this. I really would have liked to have a separate character generator as in DAO.

3. The inability to upgrade companion's equipment. In DAO certain equipment was perfect for certain characters. The Legion armor for Oghren. Cailin's armor and Maric's sword for Alistair. Etc.

4. Character generation options are too limited. The problem of the family can be easily explained by saying the character was adopted if we chose a non-human race. Or make the character the spouse of a member of the family. An early death of that unfortunate character would make the fall of Lotheren even more tragic. You already adjust the family member in the party based on whether my character is a mage or not. Aesthetically I thought the women all had manly jaws while the men all had
weak chins. It was easily adjusted and is more of a nit that a
dislike.

Likes:

1. The map is now usable. It is a nice simple graphic that easily shows the paths. Excellently done.

2. The inventory now classifies sellable loot as junk. The overall organization is much better.

3. Automatic assignment of the quick keys. That was one tedious housekeeping chore in DAO to make sure that that similar items (e.g. fire spell) were the same for different characters.

4. The graphics is nicer although that is an expected requirement since graphic cards went from EGA to VGA.

5. Finally my character speaks. This was a complaint of mine in DAO. I get to select a voice for my character but it is not really used much. While I would have like to be able to chose a voice, the voices used were fine.

6. Automatic tactical assignments now make sense. I had to make only minor adjustments instead of starting all over as I usually did in DAO.

Nits:

1. It takes way too long in the story to get to the shops and home base. The story should start off after the first year at Kirkwall in home base with shops around it. After one year my character should know his way around the city much better even though I, the player, may not know it on the first play through.

2. There is still a locked chest in the game before a rogue is acquired. At least it is only one, unlike DAO where there were many. It makes not being a rogue more reasonable.

More later once I finish the game the first time.

I have now finished the game twice, once as a good mage and once as an evil warrior. This review will take aside all bugs and issues with quests that didn't work out., will level criticisms in direct comparisons to other famous Bioware games, particularly Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age Origins, and suggest tips for making a better game.

Dragon Age II has a much faster paced and better done battle system than Origins. Battles are flashier, quicker, more fun, and more visceral in their feeling. Spell effects are not bad, although fire has no real depth and is all one color, and it is incredibly satisfying taking down the (few) bosses in the game. Unlike Origins, where I found myself constantly dreading the next area full of easily killed darkspawn that would still take 5+ minutes to complete, in this one I moved along at a steady clip and was excited to see the next area.

It's too bad that the next area was one that I had seen already 5+ times before. The absolute worst criticism being levelled at this game is the incredible over use of the same areas. Havng to go through each dungeon as they magically fill with more enemies constantly is boring. Seeing the exact same dungeon lay out is boring. This is the first missed opportunity: If this game takes place in the same place/setting over 10 years, why does NOTHING change? Parts of caves can collapse. Thieves can overtake a whole section of the Wounded Coast and build a small city. None of this happens. A good example is the Fable series, which is generally inferior to Bioware games, but really makes the passage of time successfully felt in that your choices actually have an effect on the world around you. Did you donate money to have the old town renovated? Excellent, now it's a sprawling inner city and looks beautiful. You didn't? Now it's home to brothels and seedy crime back alleys.

This is a big deal. For a game with a much lauded framed narrative and decades-spaning story, the effect of time passing is never really felt. Your companions don't age as you move on. Their housing looks exactly the same as they always were (Fenris' mansion annoyed me the most. So Fenris, that painting has been on the floor and the whole mansion has been trashed ever since you got it. It's been 6 years. When are you going to clean up?). This fails the immersion factor, and when I have to go into the codex to read what my companions have been up to, I realize I am playing a video game.

How can it be improved? When you enter the housing, (which should be updated after 6 years to show people actually live in it) A voice over ala the intro to Awakenings can update you on what your companions have been doing. Some Cut scenes of Anders helping Mages escape, Sebastian doing Charity work in the Chantry, Fenris brooding in his mansion, or Aveline getting promoted to Guard would help with the immersion and make the presentation more smooth. As it stands, characters statically remain in one spot and are exactly what they are: Video game characters.

The companions are another sticking point. I want to applaud Bioware first, for making all of the main Love Interests bi, as it keept everyone included, and to me did not feel shoe horned in. I just wish you had more options for talking with them. The aforementioned lack of time passing obviously made the romances and friendship talks feel way more rushed than they should have. I remember having long and intimate conversations with the origins characters, and really enjoying everything they had to say. That is all gone here. In short, companions should have been exactly like they were in the first one: Deep people with intricate backstories that took time to come out of their shells as they warmed up their friendships with you. The one year of time passed a lot better in Origins than the 10 years passed in DA2. More conversations. More romancing options, and more characters wouldn't hurt either.

I never really felt the great love or interest I had in the Origins characters. I remember talking to Wynn 6+ times and only feel like I did so on average 3x per character. They feel a lot more hollow than the characters in the first game. I didn't spend enough time with them to truly like any of them, except for Anders. The voice acting for them all was fairly good, and I liked the character designs.

The overall design for DA2 is worse than Origins. Graphics don't seem as detailed or crisp as origins, and I strongly dislike the way Kirkwall was built. Here's a good example: When you are running around and looking for the chantry, with the camera down and looking ahead you only see a bunch of right angles as buildings meet the pavement. If you want to see the actual tops of buildings, you have to crane the camera way the hell far up to see the skyline. I can't run around pointing up to see the interesting sites, and its absolutely TERRIBLY done how all of the interesting city architecture is completely out of frame for when you are playing the normal game.

You know the end of Star wars, where Luke is rushing down the death star and avoiding blasts in that huge trench? Imagine you are playing Dragon Age II and you are stuck in that trench. All you can see is the nondescript sides of buildings and if you want to see the tps of buildings, you have to move your camera all the way up. But while in the trench, everything looks the same. This kills immersion, removes interest in exploration, and makes Kirkwall ugly.

Color choice is poor. Lowtown is the worst zone in the game, everything is a sand color and has no variation. That sand color is on the sides of buildings, on the ground, and on the steps. No need to look around here, everything looks the same. It doesn't change over the years either. The alienage doesn't stand out either, despite the fact that it has a low resolution tree in the center of it.

Next, Origins import. When it isn't bugged, your choices you made in the first game are completely inconsequential. I saw that the reason for this was a design choice so that new players didn't feel left out, but by trying to exclusively cater to the  new player the old player (Who actually enjoyed and loved Origins, even embracing its faults) can't help but feel utterly betrayed. Oh I'm so glad Zevran is here! No mention of my Warden romancing him. Nathanial is here! No further dialogue on his mission. Why bother to allow anyone to import their saves if it really makes no difference? Are you rewarding new players or punishing old players?

The length of the game is another problem. There is simply not as much content as origins. I played Origins, over 6 characters, over 300 hours. That is an average of roughly 50 hours per character, although more time was spent on some characters than others, and this includes the Awakening Expansion. Dragon Age II? I have 2 characters who did every sidequest available to them on each playthrough, and finished each time in about 17 hours. That is not even 1/10th of what I got out of the first game, and is the strongest point of contention I have for the sequel.

I had fun while I played, and I enjoyed the story, although not as much as the first one. In the first game, the world changed depending on the choices you made, and that affected the final outcome of the story. Multiple playthroughs were required for each of them, and you could seriously screw up the world if you wanted to.

The sequel? It ends exactly the same no matter what choice you make, and you have to fight both factions. I don't mind a morally grey area or choice you have to make, but if your choices never matter in the long run, why bother giving them to us in the first place? When I play I'm going to find out if it mattered or not. I find it insulting to be given a choice and have it come out the same no matter what.

So how do I feel in general? Let down, disappointed, upset sometimes with what happens. This is the worst modern Bioware game, which is saying a lot, but it's still a Bioware game, which means it is still better than 90% of other games that released nowadays. (It'll always be better than say, Fable. Or Most JRPG's, and it was 1000x better than Final Fantasy XIII, which didn't know when to shut up with its stupid characters.)

Perhaps the game is better than most people want to admit, and they just want to spend more time in the world Bioware has created. It's a shame the sequel doesn't want you to.

Final Score: 6/10.

Other games comparisons: Origins: 8.5/10. ME2: 9.5/10.
I played the game on release date until a couple days ago, on the 12th. I played on Normal until I switched over to casual, and I played almost all of origins on Casual. I play for story and fun, not difficulty.

In summary, Dragon Age II is missing the Bioware magic. What is the Bioware magic? Playing a game and seeing how you affect the world around you. Experiencing exciting worlds and alien cultures, and bonding with the people who journey with you.

I'm only into the game a little bit, but these are my reactions so far.  I'm sure it will change as time goes by.

Liked:

Graphics (in gameplay) seem to be greatly improved.

Character models are a lot better.

Ability to pause, then assign actions to multiple party members before unpausing (this was lacking in the PS3 version of DA:O).

You got rid of those weird stone pad things that were supposed to be bathtubs.

The quote about a strange decrease in pigeon population in Ferelden.

Dislike:

(by the way, most of these things seem to have been changed simply for the sake of changing, as opposed to, you know, making it better)

Inventory, map, basically all secondary screen graphics. WAY too dark. Especially the map. dark map on a dark screen with dark location markers. huh?

Dark background for text. Clearly no one at bioware understands legibility or has spend any time looking at a web page with white text on a black background then looked at something else. I feel like the text is being seared into my brain.

No way to inspect items when picking them up. I have no idea what half the stuff is. "Belt" is totally undescriptive.

No way to access inventory when picking things up. This isn't a big deal so far, but what happens when inventory is full?

Little or no descriptions for items.

No markers or highlights for unread items in the codex. By that I mean in the headers, not individual entries.

No access to party members' inventory and character screens while at home. This is, frankly, utterly stupid. I can only have conversations with them while at home, but I can't check to see what their friendship level is before and after? I can't set up my tactics then? My storage box is there, but I can't really do inventory management because I can't access my party members? Perhaps this will change later in the game(I'm living in the hovel), but as of now, it is driving me crazy.

Inability to use what seems to be the majority of items on characters other than yourself.

The decision wheel(for conversations) seems utterly random sometimes in placement of responses. I pick a left response, and most of the time, further responses are on the left. But occasionally they are on the right. Huh? Frankly, the wheel motif in general sucks. Whoever thought it was better than a simple mulitple choice list is crazy. Pretty, yes. Better, no.

The abilities/talents section is a clusterf***. I get the tree idea. But the implementation is terrible. Why do I have to select one tree to see what's there, then unselect, then scroll to another tree, select it to look, then unselect it, then scroll to another tree, then select it, look, then unselect it, then scroll back to the first tree because I forgot what was there, then select it... and on and on. REALLY? Pretty is nice, but I'd rather have functional.

As far as I can tell so far, and I might be wrong, but the attributes have been dumbed down to being worthless. I am playing a rogue, and it seems like I only need 2 stats, dex and cunning. MAYBE the occasional constitution. It remains to be seen. This appears to be the case for each class, with one must stat and ignore the rest.

Although I loved the combat, the streamlining, the addition of a humorous/sarcastic dialogue option, and the return of past characters, I was disappointed with these:

Lack of physical scale
Kirkwall felt so tiny...the Ozrammar commons in DA:O felt bigger than the whole city of Kirkwall.

Reusing the same dungeons/caves
I must have been in that same cave in the wounded coast+sundermount at least 10-15 times, and the same dockside house 10-15 times. I understand it's the same city, but why always the same damned areas...it get really boring.

Lack of an inspiring story for most of the game
  • Act 1 was alright until you got into Kirkwall and then had to grind unrelated side-quests to fund the Deep Roads expedition.
  • Act 2 was about dealing with the Qunari and felt pretty bland, because I really didn't feel them as a threat until the took over the city.
  • Act 3 was interesting with the whole mage/templar relationship, but the antagonist was just boring...a crazy lyrium addict is the final boss, who cares?
  • There was no sense of accomplishment for defeating her unlike killing the Archdemon in DA:O, because she wasn't really evil, the lyrium just made her crazy and paranoid but not totally wrong. The game should not have ended here, it felt very incomplete, even more so than the Halo 2 ending.
Forgettable companions
  • Isabella was only good for humorous banter and DPS in combat and she glitched after Act 2 - she was stuck in my Estate with an "!" on her head but unclickable so I couldn't finish the romance, even though I had already bedded her.
  • Bethany was absent for most of the game after Act 1.
  • Merrill was cute at first, but turned out to be irritating as the game progressed (i.e. that damned Eluvian mirror...wtf does this have to do with restoring her people's history).
  • Anders was a lot more boring and just plain darker than in DA:A,
  • Fenris was an ass.
  • Aveline was alright, but bland.
  • Varric was the only character I cared for but I never used him in combat after Act 1 since his damage output was pretty bad (but that's kinda my fault since I used him for unlocking chests with high cunning instead of high dext)
Overall, what I think went wrong with the game is the lack of a major antagonist; this whole game felt like a prologue for a much greater game. This could've been a DLC if there weren't so many darned useless and boring sidequests.

[*]Other minor annoyances
  • Not being able to customized default preset Hawke: Why the heck not?
  • What happened to potions? I can't buy certain potions until I find all the ingredients, bah just charge me more gold...I had over 220sovereigns at the end and barely spent any, except on some runes and an endgame two-handed axe.
  • Junk...why even bother with junk items...just give me gold or nothing, why bother with junk??
  • Hard to find complete armor sets -> the only ones I had were Blood dragon and Champion.

Obviously I was exaggerating, but in all seriousness, Kirkwall is pretty small, when you compare it to all the places you can go to in DA:O. There should have been a lot more areas in the city that you can visit rather than just 2 main ones where most quests are found (Hightown and Lowtown) and several other minor areas (darktown, docks, viscount tower, chantry, gallows).

Well, if you put it that way...

Please write down at least 1more major area and 3 minor area that can be add to Kirkwall, and please, it had to make sense.

Well, like I said, most of the action revolved around Hightown and Lowtown and recycled areas, the latter which was really frustrating. Kirkwall as a city was not small compared to cities in DA:O, but you didn't really get to go around it much through questing.
