Really? The National Socialist German Workers Party that controlled Germany from 1933 to 1944 is a filtered ban word?

Liked: very nice battles, wonderful spell/talent trees, and a very good story. Wonderful the rogue skills combo (38022 damage points with assassination, lol!!!)

Disliked: story's span is 7 years instead of 10 (should we expect any expansion?). Sensation of "void" regarding almost everything...I mean, the story is beautiful but is not well explored. The companions are good, but they're not on the same level of the previous ones. Every area is wonderful, but more or less all the same (same dungeons, same halls, same enemies). The three acts follow a good plot, but each final part is too quick and superficial, without a real epic battle and epic ending (the only good one is the duel with the arishok, despite the fact it would be better in Kirkwall plaza instead of the palace). A lot of bug and troubles, mainly with some side-quest, Merrill personal quest, Merrill-Isabela romance, and with directX 11.

I liked the game, no doubt about it, but the sensation I had is that something is missing. I don't know about EA policy about deadlines, but it seems that the game is a sort of beta and in my opinion other 6-8 months of work to have something more "solid" is a time worth to wait for a masterpiece. I don't know why this step back (because, for example, ME2 is something wonderful and improve the ME experience), but Origins, despite the bad graphic and the "silent" Warden, is totally better and more exaustive.

My two cents

Like: Voiced dialog...that's it
Dislike: A ton. Read my post in the other review thread for all of it. It is a loooong list.

But in particular, I hated a spoiler one. I HATE the stupid lyrium sword. I hate it. It takes away all of the seriousness, all of the tension, and is just stupid.

You know what a magic sword was up to this game? One that glows when darkspawn are around, or just a strong one made of a meteor.

Now? A magic sword is one that lets you fly, shoot lightning bolts throw the ground, make statues come to life, make statue heads come to life with like spider legs that breath fire, move at ~200 mph and slash a shockwave, explode into red energy and emerge unharmed, create a red forcefield of electricity...Completely ridiculous.

Furthermore, why did she NOT use that weapon against the First Enchanter monster? I think that would've been pretty useful. She could've easily killed it there, then tried to kill me in the same room with NO witnesses. Also, no one to come to my aid. So why didn't she?

That's a very nice question

Generally speaking the game looked and ran pretty well.  There was some flickering with the graphics throughout, the occasional hitching up of cut scenes but nothing I couldn't deal with.  I got lucky in that all (if I recall correctly) of the flags from my Dragon Age: Origins import were correct.  Things mostly went to hell once I entered Act 3.  This was where it became really apparent that Dragon Age 2 was a seriously rushed job.  There are things that are just sloppy.  In act 3 my combat started glitching constantly to the point where I couldn't even attack sometimes.  There were quests I couldn't finish because they simply weren't there.  Things just didn't work properly, and it was increasingly frustrating.

Combat in Dragon Age 2 at first seems very button mashy and boring, especially at the lower levels when your protagonist doesn't have any activated skills or spells to really sink their teeth into yet.  As time went on, however I started feeling like a total badass working the hotkeys and radial menu like a boss while my rogue ninja owned everything around her.  The boss battles were nice and challenging, requiring some real strategy to win.  Plus everything just looked really beautiful.  No complaints about the combat, inventory, menus and all that other good stuff.

There was a lot of stuff that felt like mindless grinding, I have to admit.  The amount of sidequests in the game is ridiculous.  I am a fan of this as normally I am a sidequest ****.  Some of them could have been completely done away with though.  I would have preferred that they added more to the main plot and skimmed down the sidequests, but again this is where that whole rushed, somewhat lazy writing comes in.

I enjoyed the characters of the game.  I didn't fall in love with them the way I did with the characters from Origins, but they were pretty well rounded as far as being flawed, believable people.  At worst they suffered from some bad writing on occasion, another reminder of how quickly this game was finished.  By the end I still felt really disconnected to them for the most part.  I understand that you're supposed to infer that Hawke has been getting to know these characters in the "off camera" time and passages of time, but it didn't really work for me.

Neither did the passing of time.  The passage of time was handled poorly.  Which is a shame because it could have been amazing.  It should have been amazing.   I was really excited for this because it was something no game had ever done, at least not well.   Aside from people saying "well three years have passed since [insert climactic event here]"  there was no feeling of passing time.  They could have at the very least changed the outfits of the main characters.  I understand that people have a favorite shirt, but come on.

As for the main plot - there really wasn't one.  As a person who appreciates a grand narrative, I was disappointed, but I enjoyed playing the game enough that I was able to sort of shrug it off and go with the flow.   In the end though everything felt a little meaningless.   There was no Big Bad.  No Blight to conquer, no grand adventure, no heroic main quest line.  Basically Hawke is just...hanging out...occasionally fixing other peoples' problems.

In the end there was no real payoff for my protagonist.  I haven't even finished it because I'm frustrated and depressed right at the very end.  None of my choices mattered, which is a huge disappointment for a Bioware game.  I felt really useless for most of the game.   You cannot prevent certain things.  This leaves little desire for replaying for me.  The annoying thing about it is that Bioware goes to great lengths to make you think that you can affect the outcome of events.  There is no choice.  There is a set story that never changes.  It feels manipulative, like Bioware is presenting the illusion of choice even though there are actually no real choices in the game.  You can only choose how to react to the events that are already set in stone.  But your reactions have no real consequence.  They just want you to feel like they do.

If I were going to give Dragon Age 2 a score from 1-10, 1 being "piece of crap" and 10 being "best game ever made" I would have to go with a 7.  Enjoyable, playable, likeable.  I enjoyed it, but it was rushed, and it was very clear that Bioware simply didn't have their hearts in it.  Bioware can and has done much better.  In fact, this is not really a Bioware game in any of the ways I've come to love from Bioware.  At all. Nothing of what I love about Bioware was present.  It's like a different company made the game.  Good game?  Sure I guess.  Epic awesomeness exemplary of what Bioware can do?  Not even close.

Thank you for reading my opinion. Posted Image

EDIT:  Haha.  Someone mentioned they wanted a Cartman-esque "Screw you guys I'm going home" option at the end.  This is exactly how I felt.  You were left with no right choice and no one ever listened to you anyway.  So it was a choice between two horrible things, neither of which feels right.  At the end you're left with massive devastation, the loss of everything you ever loved all because could affect NOTHING.  ....Hooray I won?

I was talking about how the Tranquil Solution reaked of N-azism and the final solution and that it was the most blatant example of N-azism I've ever found in a game not specifically related to that particular party or time period.

Basically it was a nod at how the game did its best to demonize Templars in lore and then demonized the mage in game mechanics before just saying "Oh well" and demonizing them in Lore with Orsino.

I'm glad to see Bioware is looking for honest reviews from us.  Thank you for giving us a place to express our opinions.

Companions

I'll start with this because it's the most important aspect of the game, to me.  I loved the companion interaction in Origins and was pleased to see some things improved in DA2.  But, I felt more could have been done to make our relationships (be they family, friends, or lovers) more realistic and entertaining.

What I'd really like to see is a combination of Origins and DA2 in DA3. To me, a perfect system would be something like this:

-- Give us more companion interaction. Let us go visit them for a chat when we feel like it (at least once an act) as well as when they want to talk. A combination of PC initiated chats and NPC initiated chats would go really far in helping to build a better feeling of connection, I think.
-- Continue giving us companion reaction (especially LI) to events. I was very very pleased to see Hawke's LI come console her after her mother died. I want more of this!  This was sorely lacking in Origins and I hope we get more of it in the future.
-- Keep it coming with the party banter.  DA2 improved on an already awesome aspect of DAO and I just want to see more of it.
-- Have our LI's make a few moves once in awhile (give us a rose or recite bad poetry).   I really missed this in DA2.
-- Continue restricting conversations to home or camp, or at least non-combat areas.  I appreciated not getting ninja rosed by accidently clicking on Alistair while trying to loot a body after a fight.  Thank you.
-- Continue to allow us glimpses of our friends interacting with each other.  This was a great addition to DA2.
-- Let us keep friends who agree to disagree. I really like the rivalry as opposed to the hate stuff in DAO.

Story

-- Plot.  This was good.  Frustrating (which I'm sure Gaider loves to hear) but good.  I hated feeling like there was no "right" answer, but hated it in a good way.
-- Questing.  Very enjoyable except when it came to fighting people I didn't want to fight.  I'd like to have been able to have the option of talking some people down, espcially when you've got mages and Templars trying to work together.
-- Timespan.  I really enjoyed watching my character grow over a number of years.  However, I felt we were cheated out of three years since the tout of a ten-year story really wasn't (at least not yet).  I also would have liked to have seen some things change in Kirkwall in those seven years.  New barkeeps, new merchants, Fenris fixing up his mansion -- things like that would have really helped convey the passing of time.

Graphics and Sound

I'm not sure how many of these are bugs or just the way things are, but a few things really broke immersion for me in this department.

-- The gamma issue.  I was playing with DX11 and graphic cranked up, but comparing screenshots of Alistair in DA2 to Origins revealed just how flat DA2 looked.  I tried turning down my gamma but even a 10% decrease made things too dark to see.
-- The body types.  I love the new look of Flemeth and the Quanari.  However, women, human and elven, look deformed in the shoulders.  I realize you were trying to get rid of the manly look females had in Origins, but honestly I'd have preferred the broader shoulders to what we wound up with in DA2.
-- Faces.  They may be more realistic looking now, but I'd much prefer pretty over realistic.
-- Sound issues.  I love the music in games but I had to turn my music and sound effects down over 1/2 way to be able to hear and understand the dialog.  And even then, I can no longer play under a headset because even forcing stereo, I can't hear what's being said in cutscenes over the music and ambient sound.

Game Play

--Nodes.  Love 'em.  Glad we're no longer pretending to traipse all over a map.
--Maps.  I was a little annoyed at the reuse of areas, but eventually got used to it.   What'd I'd like to see is the maps reflecting the actual area we're in so it doesn't look like we have more to explore when in fact, that area is blocked off.
--Combat.  I liked the feeling of pushing a button and something happening.  I like the new skill trees.  I'd like to see a better targeting system.  It was difficult to do an AOE and then have to make sure I was clicked on an enemy to hit them with a single target skill or spell.  A tab to target option would be really great.
-- Dialog wheel.  Loved it.  The only improvement I could see would be to have numbers assigned to the wheel so we could use the keyboard to select our replies vs being forced to use the mouse.

Edited after finishing and replaying the game.
------

First off, I want to say, that of the games out there now, this is the best!

MAIN PLOT: This game's storyline is a slow build, but once I got to Act 2 everything changed. I started appreciating the plot and the almost gentle progression.  At times though, the main quest felt like a side-quest.. mostly because I didnt understand what the main quest even was.  As for the end, I thought that was a very useless epilogue - only my LI was mentioned, and no one else? What happened to them?

SIDE QUESTS: I dont think I've had so much fun playing the side quests before. I basically ignored most of them in DA1.

FAMILY: Its great to have family involved. I liked going home to my mom or fighting with my sister, the only disappointment was the fact that mom didnt have much dialogue and neither did sister.  I would have loved childhood stories about myself and my sister from my mom and uncle.  Some sort of backstory that's not buried in the codex.  What was I doing before the blight? Was I an accountant? I dont know.

COMPANIONS:
(a) Voice Acting. Awesome.

(B) Subplots. I like that we have subplots with our party members in every act.  Fenris and Aveline's subplots were very well done and definitely memorable.

© Same-Sex Romance: I still feel the need to thank bioware for including this again and in full form.

© Romance in General. I romanced Merril, and the only thing I kept thinking was that I wish I had a chance to talk to her more.  I felt as through the romance was based on very limited dialogue (more like a mass effect 2 kind of romance as opposed to DA1).  BUT the romance scene itself was so well executed that I forgot about how little I spoke with her before that.  The pillow talk after the scene was *great* too!  Also, as it goes with romance pacing, it was strange to have Merril move in after our first sex scene, especially since we weren't really dating or anything like that. And after the "move in" nothing is said about it nor can I even talk to her... and she's IN my house!  It would have been great to have my mom or sister say something about my romance.  Also, why does flirting stop after the sex scene?!  I'd like to still woo my character, even if it doenst lead to a sex scene, but maybe it leads to a kiss or something.. anything!

(d) Rivalmance.  I LOVED it.  On my second playthrough I went ahead and did what I originally wanted to do with Merrill, not give her the tool to fix the mirror, and we were able to actually have a fight about that. Nicely done.  The Rivalmance idea gets full support from me.  I only wish the sex-scene itself was different.

(d) Romance related Dialogue: There feels like much less companion dialogue in this game.   BUT I also like that I haven't exhausted the dialogue yet either.  Being able to speak with your companions of the fly was nice.  Merril has very few things to say about herself, the past or the Dalish.  Also, I found the flirting lines with Merril really cheesy, and only did so because I wanted to proceed with a romance.  The only flirting line I didnt think was cheesy, was the "You may not deserve me but I deserve you" bit.

(d) Banter.  Lots of good stuff here and with the number of companions, I don't think I'll ever hear all of the banter.

(e) Character designs.  I love how distinct everyone looks and acts. The new body types are great.

(f) Comforting Hawke.  I am soooo grateful that when I lost my mom that Merril came by to give me a peptalk.  Finally, someone asks me how I am!

(g) Companion Interactions.  Its refreshing to see the companions visiting each other and seeking their guidance, but it wasn't executed well.  I'd visit Isabela and suddenly Merrill is there; or Aveline tells me that its "been a long time" when it hasnt.   Like everyone else, I love that dog is there.  The fact that now I can ask a question to my party while in conversation with someone else is a good thing.

(h) Fenris and Aveline.  I think that these two are the best written characters in the game and have "star power".

THE WORLD:  I have no problems with being in one city, but I guess I expected the city to change more than it did.  I don't mind the reused areas too much.   I'm fine with there being a few places you always visit (the bone pit and sundermount) but its when I go into other places that seem very similar to each other, that's when it loses flavour for me.  I would have appreciated more fantastical locations (like in DA1 Sacred Ashes quest).  I really enjoyed how the landscapes looked.

INVENTORY
(a) Companion Inventory: The fact that I can still equip my companions with their own weapons saved the day for me. If they were completely static, it would have been boring, but I am still able to upgrade their weaponry.  As for their armour, I also like the idea of upgrades.  I sort of wish I'd see the upgrades though, as a different colour of armour or *something*.  The fact that I didnt have to equip the upgrades myself was nice too.

(B) Naming of Objects: This I found strange because there is space to put in neat names for items, but mostly they are just generic.  I mean it makes sense they are generic as in reality if you found a helmet on the street you wouldnt know what its called or it might not even have a special name.  I miss the idea of a mage "Identifying" special objects, but that's probably just me.

© Junk:  This container has gotten a lot of heat, BUT it does serve a purpose.  i can now mark items as junk and sell them all with one button when I get to the store, how convenient is that? Very!

TIME JUMPS: This left me feeling disconnected from the game. I believe its because I'm not filled in on what happened during the jump with myself or my companions (or perhaps the lack of control).  The game tries to remind me that 3 years have passed, but its hard to "get into" that.

ACTION: I loved the action.  The action makes this game a lot more fun to play (in that aspect) than the original.  The skill trees are a good addition as well.

RESOURCES / RUNES: This is something that was streamlined and that I loved.  I no longer had to go to the store and buy items to craft, they were always there.  Great job with this one.

LOADING SCENES: I think even this needs ot be mentioned.  Great loading scenes.  They were different each time and it was also a faster load.

WHAT ITS MISSING
Its hard to explain what this game is actually missing for me without saying its missing "charm" or "soul".  What I think has happened to create that feeling is the mix of: 1) not enough companion dialogue/backstory/progression, with 2) the fact that I'm not sure why my companions are still following me around.

In DA1 we were a group of people thrown together to save the world.  Even though its not a unique story, the fact that we were drawn together and that we had that camp common space created a feeling of "we're in this together" and "us against the world" which is missing from DA2.  In DA2 I just feel like "stuff happens" and maybe some of my companions will be around later.  They, currently, don't feel integral to Hawke, not even my LI.

Thanks for allowing a space where we can post our own take on the game!

I've really liked it so far.

I've encountered few bugs... I downloaded the high res patch though, but it seems that my GTX 275 with 1.5 GB of VRAM isn't good enough to run it. :-/

I really enjoyed the story, to the point where I just can't stop replaying it. The characters were engaging and the plot twists are fun.

The combat is significantly improved from DA:O, as are the talent trees.

The few things I didn't particularly enjoy include the immense amount of unusable armor pieces you find... this wouldn't be a problem if your companions could equip them, but since they can't, there is no need for all that loot. I also wish that junk wouldn't take up bag space.

An update to my review from few pages ago. I noticed several people pointed that out and I hope it will be fixed in the next game. Why were templars so blind to my Hawke being a mage, and a blood mage at that. I know that the knight commander knew, she pointed that out and she said she tolerated me, that's ok I suppose, at least in the 3rd act, but before? I know it could be a favoritismsm towards one class and all, but adding some pressure and more impact on the story b y the fact that Hawke is a mage would be really nice. Especially in case of blood mages. My companions knew Merrill was a blood mage and they talked about it all the time. Anders warned her over and over that it's evil, yet, not one word about me impaling myself on my staff to cast spells. I don't think that's something that would go unnoticed. Just imagine how many new plots could that allow to explore. For one, being a mage, Hawke could decide to go public about it, which would definitely complicate many things, but at the same time, with the right reputation, as a champion and all, it could help the mage causes, and similar, with bad reputation it would aid the templar's cause. Also, true or false accusations about using a blood magic would be nice... or accusations of being a mage should Hawke decide to keep his/her profession a secret.
The same could be done with the templar specialization, putting mages on edge and adding options to Hawke's career. It would also create more tension between party members, being a templar and traveling with a possessed mage and a blood mage would surely cause some trouble. As I said, I only played the game once with a mage, so I can't say more about it, but this is another thing the game lacks.

Ok, I finished the game last night.

On the whole I can take the game or leave it.  The story is extremely dark.

I really liked the environments in Kirkwall and Hightown.  I didn't like the Sundermount area.  My favorite area was the Wounded Coast.  I liked the look of the Deep roads better this time, easier to get through.  I loved the concept of the Black Emporium, really enjoyed that. I don't like the feel of reusing as many of the same environments that you did.  It got really boring and was hard to finish the game.  Nothing new or exciting to look forward too.  If your going to use the same area at least allow me to pick up loot.  I had a problem with the loot system, so  I'm not sure if it is a bug or what.  As I was killing enemies, I could see the loot on the ground which was a lot of loot.  I would pick up loot from one dead enemy which caused alot of my loot to disappear from the rest.  When they disappeared into the ground.

I didn't like the rune system and not being able to swap runes from one piece of equipment from another as in the DAO and DAA.  I really didn't like this.

I didn't get the feel of involvement with my companions that I did in DAO and DAA.  I don't know if it's the fact in the first game that we were on the road together?  The connection wasn't there for me.  I think you guys missed the boat in the romance department.  If love interest moved into my home should have been more interaction with the love interest inside the home.  Being able to walk up and get a kiss just like the first one.  I found this lacking in the romance.  The depth wasn't there with the love interest as in the first game.  I just didn't feel the connection.

I love the new battle mechanics.  Really fast paced and I got the impression that I was fighting for my life.  In DAO it was to easy.  The UI, I'm not really liking the look and feel of it.  I ran into a problem with the game telling me I had spec points to spend and when I clicked on a spec to add, the UI wouldn't click, so I lost out on a few spec upgrades.  The issue seems to be with the pointer in the game.   I also had problems with the Tactics screen, it was hard to figure out what I was doing.  Sometimes the screen would get stuck.

I thought most of the returning companions looked good except for Alistair and Zevran.  Was that a joke on your part?  Do you hate Alistair and Zevran fangirls?  They looked terrible.  I felt that Alistair should have looked like Cullen in the game.   Poor Zevran just got butchered in looks, at least Zevran had meat on his bones.   I don't like the look of the elves, they look sickly.   I understand the need to make a few slight changes but the with the elves you went the wrong way.   I enjoyed the look of the Qunari, didn't get the feeling they were tough to beat in combat.  I found this lacking given their reputation.  The Arishok battle was good.   I loved all of the new lore added to the game.

I did appreciate the unlimited storage in my chest at home.  I liked how my chest was there at the end with Sandal, nice touch.  I'm still on the fence about the crafting system.

I'm a bit confused on Sebastian, I thought there were more quest with this adventure or is that it?  What happened to the Fex?  Did I playthrough so fast I missed them?

I loved all of the references from the first part of the series: I felt you guys got that right, I really enjoyed this, you could have added more. No mention of Connor in my game even though in plot summary it seemed to be important.  I also had a glitch with the Quest for Bethany in the deep roads.  I took Anders and still was unable to save her?   The transition moved so fast I wasn't given the option to save her as the walkthrough says that we can do.

I do miss the conversations from the Journal that you could click on and review.  I found myself wanting to go back and reread those convos.  It wasn't there.  I will have to adjust my settings it is hard to hear dialogue with the background noise.

These are my first impressions.

I hope you guys do a better job with the dlc than you did with Origins.  I would also like to say I'm already in the camp of having the chance to play both of the characters in a future game.  That would be amazing if you can pull that off.  I'm starting to not like the open endings to much in this series.  I'd like a bit more closure.  I'd like to see an expansion for the wardens on why they disappeared?   I'll look forward to seeing what you do.  I'm ready for dlc at this point. I'm not sure I'll get the replay value out of this game as the first one.

Edited:  Just wanted to say I really loved all of the voice actors and felt they did a tremendous job.

Aveline's romance quest was hiliarious.

I did feel the game was lacking in choices with no saves for the family.

I don't like the armor situation for my companions.  I also hated picking up all of that junk. I don't  like that you took steal away from rogues, that is what a rogue does.  You could have added a unlock feature in Act 2 for stealing.  I also didn't like the tomes that we unlocked didn't have have any poems or any information about the persons flight from Ferelden...a missed opportunity.  Please return the quick weapons swap button back in.  I really missed that.

I do love watching the spells execute, awesome.  Love the new finishing moves of the rogues.   I also love the new looks of all of the armor.  Love the new eye colors in the game and how they show up better.   You guys still need better hairstyles.  I was hoping for a overhaul in this area.  I do like how the light in the character creator lights better.

I felt that Varric and Cassandra should have been in the game more and their discussion.  I'm intrigued about Leliana's appearance and her new codex entry.

I didn't like the time skips and what happened to the boon that the warden asks for at the end of the first game?

I missed the random encounters on the map.  I felt there should have been more.

Dragon Age 2 ---> Fantastic game. I'm going to review the game by trying to compare it to the first one.

I've already done 2 playthroughs of the game and each time it was a lot of pleasure to play it. Personally I was into the game as much as the first one.

Talking about the story, I have to say it was great to see something very different from the first game, and yet so marvelous, despite not everyone knowing how to appreciate it. A lot of people suggest that it was a lot worse than that of DA:O. However, they don't seem to understand that you can't really compare these 2 stories, since they are so different. It's like comparing a red pencil with a blue pencil, They are so different yet so alike at the same time. DA:O' story was like writing a book from scratch, DA2 story was like reading a book and filling in some of the blanks. You really can't compare them. Some suggest that the story was lacking epicness, well DA2 is about a simple person, by the name Hawke, that through will and skill ends up to be the most important person in the DA universe at that time. He might be the leader of a revolution, someone who was just trying to make a name for himself, or maybe someone, who was trying to achieve peace, but was forced into events that were out of his control. It's a story about sadness, adventure, love, loss, rivalry, racism, honor and humility. It's a kind of story that makes you wish you were part of it. Despit what everyone says I thing it WAS epic,  fantastic and on par with firsts story. It might start a little slow, but once you get to know some of the world and people in it, you start to get sucked into it more and more. Amazing and epic story.

Voice acting was outstanding and great same as the first game, the main character being extremely well acted. Characters were well developed and three dimensional, and the dialogue facial expressions were something that amazed me time and time again. They showed what characters were feeling and experiencing, making you care for what happens to them. It helped develop them and their feelings extremely well, and by the end you knew what to expect from them.  Big plus on this part.

The game-play was amazing. Main quests were good a usual, with some being even better than the quests of the first game. At first you don't understand why this or that was marked as a main quest, but once time passes, you realize that each quest affects, one way or the other, the course of the game. Companion and side quests were undoubtedly better than in DA:O, varying from dark and drama, to comedy. Some if not most have an impact on the general story, and I always wanted to do all of them just for some more info on the whole universe or just some comedic relief.

When finding out that the combat will have more of an action feel, I felt a little worried, that it might destroy the rpg style of DA, but I was wrong. It's faster, different and new, but somehow it keeps the same rpg-ish feel of the first game. The skill system is a little different from DA:O, but overall its mostly the same, and yet somehow I seem to prefer the 2nd games system. I don't have a preference for which combat style is better, and if you go for either in the third game, it will be fine for me.

The inventory and shopping system was better than the first. It was easy and fast to use, with the new potion, rune, poison and grenade system being a major improvement to the game, not needing to spend too much time on them, just enough to get you satisfied. Also companion armor was done brilliantly in my opinion. It makes a lot of sense them wearing what they want, instead of you "telling" them what to wear. It makes sense that you won't find dozens of armors for your companions to wear in your travels, but just upgrading the ones they already have. I do understand some of the complaints in this area, that some players might enjoy changing companion armor, but for me, it took way too much time, in the first game, to take care of all my companions armor. DA2 excels in this part and a thumbs up from me on companion armor.

Visually the game is beautiful, but in order to experience the most from it you need a pretty powerfull computer, but even on low or medium settings the game looks good. Dialogue was also good now I know what I really want to say and what response to expect from the conversation, although again I don't have a preference between the firsts dialogue system and the 2nds, both being well done.

There are some thing that I didn't like or was expecting a little more. I really, didn't like the fact that the level layouts were extremely overused, and that was a letdown, but everyone already exposed the issue enough. Also you spend too much time in Kirkwall. Eighty percent of game you spend it in Kirkwall, and with the overused layouts,  in time you're starting to get bored of the environmnet. Also I wanted to go back to some parts of Ferelden to see how things were doing after the Blight, and I wanted to see more involvement in the story from major characters from DA:O. Also if I would have seen my Warden , just for 2 seconds in a cutscene, in one place or another, it would have made me the happiest person on the planet. There are some bugs here and there and the import choices don't seem to register 100%, but that can be fixed through patches.

I would give DA:O a 9.5/10, I would give DA2 a 9.3/10, because you spend too much time in one place, and some hiccups here and there. For me it was a fantastice game, and I was not dissapointed by it one bit. I'm going to start my 3rd playthrough, and probably will do a 4th one after that. I recomendd everyone to buy the game, and enjoy it!

P.S. To all the people that say, the story or the ending was bad or that there weren't enough choices> stop whining about it. Try to understand that this  isn't DA:O, this is DA2, with a total different type of story, with a different type of ending. It's meant to be played differently. And with all the criticism this game is getting I'm sure everyone is at their 3rd or 4th playthrough. What other game can do that?

I'll try to keep it brief:

Story:

I felt Act 1 dragged on too long. I understand it was setting the stage an' all, but there was no real plot beyond "make money to pay for a deep roads expedition" and it felt unfocused. Plus the masses of secondary/side quests caused it to outstay its welcome for me. The Deep Roads Expedition was perfect - pacing, environment, storytelling, all great.

Act 2 was excellent - characters were revealing their depths, much more focused, I loved almost every quest. Leandra's death and the Arishok/Isabela were incredible. I'm trying to find criticism but I can't think of any damnit.

Act 3 felt a bit rushed. Siding with the Templars was great, but the Mage side felt very weird when I was fighting blood mages and demons more than Templars, and Orsino came across as total a moron on the Mage side. Siding with the Mages felt rushed to be honest.

The ending was more abrupt than it should have been, imho. Loved the tragedy, but it all ended fast. I'd rather have some content cut out of Act 1 to flesh out the ending more really.

Characters
:

Excellent. Sometimes the difficulty would jump around in companion quests - for example Merril's quest in Act 2 seemed to me to be insanely hard compared to most of the Act.

Otherwise, brilliant. The only thing I disliked was the inability to knife Sebastian at the start of the Climax, but that's just me ^_^

Gameplay:

Very good, though there were frequent difficulty spikes that would come out of nowhere. And the night-time gangs got plain annoying after a while if you weren't interested in hunting them and were trying to do something else.

Tone:

I loved the dark tone. I much preferred it over Origins' lighter tone. However the abrupt ending did make the ending seem more empty than it should've been, imho. I heavily appreciated the rare use of third options that let you get a 100% happy ending with no consequences, it made the victories you got worth more and the decisions far more interesting.

Overall, I loved it. Please keep up the amazing storytelling and characters.

Okay, I just finished my first playthrough, so here is what I think so far. Note: my pros and cons will be mixed as I'm not too great when it comes to making lists. I like discussing things side by side.
So, where to begin...
The graphics I think are pretty good, better than DA:O. Your armor doesn't phase into itself, and neither do your weapons. They stay apart like they should. Combat is also better. It's a lot cleaner and sharper and fun to watch. I was annoyed at first to have to touch the button everytime in order for my character to fight, but evenually I got used to it. And it really is faster than DA:O. After beating DA2 the first time, I went back to DA:O and found out how slow combat really was.

I also like the new design of the races, except one: the elves. WTF? What did you do to the elves, Bioware! I know that you wanted to make the races more different, and to make them their own when compared to other elves from other games or stories, but come on! In DA:O it was said elves were more beautiful than humans, but in DA2 they are not. I can get used to the very skinny bodies and sharp long faces, but it's the ears that are killing me. They make them look like goblins instead of elves. Some of them were way to long and pointed backwards, giving the goblin look. If anything, they should be shortened and made to point vertical, not horizantal. The Qunari though were nice, and giving them horns was a nice addition.

The story was lackluster at best. Where was the main plot? Where was the reason why I wanted to become Champion? It seemed as if becoming Champion really didn't do anything for me. Or maybe I just need to play again and do something different.

As for my new companions, there definetly could have been a lot more there.  I really hated that I couldn't speak to them like I could in DA:O. There was so much that could have been discussed, like their pasts and what they were currently doing in Kirkwall at the time. Isabela and her relic was something that felt out of the blue. You discuss it with her in Act 1 and say you'll help her to find it, but then it's not brought up again until Act 2, but it's not a quest to go and find it.

Then there are the romances. I like that I can basically romance four people at once (five if I'm female) but they seemed almost forced. I romanced Anders first, and even though his romance scene was romantic, I felt there should have been more. There would have been nothing wrong with having a romance scene similar to the ones in DA:O. I also didn't really like how the romance was completed. Why doesn't Anders kiss me in the end? I hear Merrill kisses you, why not Anders? I basically saved his life and he doesn't even thank me with a kiss!

I did like seeing old characters, though, such as Nathenial, Leliana, Zevran, and Alistair. But it felt as if they were there just to be there. Leliana may actually have a reason because she is seen in the end (as well as being Sisiter Nightgale), but the others it seemed were only there to satisfy my fangirl needs. Don't get me wrong, I loved seeing them but I would have liked it better if they had been there for a real reason instead of just an optional side quest. I could be wrong though, and they really are there for a reason, but it won't be revealed until DA3.

The music I also really like, especially the soundtrack. I would have to put it in the Lord of the Rings catagory of awesome music. I especially like "Rogue's Heart", "Destiny of Love", and "Mage's Pride". My only peeve is that neither of these songs play during the credits. In fact, I heard no music whatsoever. What was that all about? At the end of DA:O, hearing "I Am the One" was fantastic! Then having it followed by "This is War" by 30 Seconds to Mars was even better. Why was there no music at the end of DA2? Unless it's a bug or for some reason my game won't play it (and I didn't have one of my playlists playing, so that wasn't it), then it's pretty disappointing.

Speaking of the ending, I don't understand at all why First Enchanter Orsino became the harvester. Where did he learn to become one, and what does it have to do with the GOA DLC? Unless it's in his codex and I didn't read it, him becoming the harvester made no sense at all to me.

All in all, I really did enjoy DA2, and I think most of the complaints I have could've been improved with more time. Bioware, what ever you have planned with either an expansion for DA2 similar to Awakening, or if there's going to be a DA3, please don't rush it. I would whether wait 6 more months than be given a game with many faults that could have been easily fixed.

I enjoyed the game very much Posted Image

Took me slightly longer to complete than Origins which was a pleasant surprise

Story was interesting and made a unique change of pace by having a framed narrative over several years in a city rather than the usual hero v ancient evil.

Combat much improved. This was one thing in Origins which I found could sometimes get a little repetitive but this was faster and felt more involved

Graphics were fine and having a voiced protaganist, well being used to it from Mass Effect I was fine with that though I understand the reservations others have over this.  Hearing Hawke talk did make a positive difference for me.

Locations did get a little samey at times but there were plenty of quests/distractions to get involved in which offset this somewhat.

Characters were interesting mostly. Glad the party banter remained with Varric, Isabela and Aveline especially fun to listen to.  Not being able to change clothing didn't bother me (didn't really bother in Origns - Leliana spent the game in her Chantry robes which just looked nice)

Enjoyed the cameos (Leliana looks more beautiful although I think Alistair has been enjoying too much Fereldan stew)

Reading a lot of criticism/pessimism before the game tempered my expectations which is my fault but I enjoyed the game which for me stands alongside Origins as a worthy sequel.  I do hope the DLC is better this time though with some story development and not just generic cave/dungeon slogs. Given the intriguing ending to the game I'm looking forward to Dragon Age III

I pre-ordered DA2 the day it first allowed it to be pre-ordered. However, to my dismay, when I got it, I got an error that had to do with windows and priviledges, after waiting over a week for a response from bioware, I eventually got someone to go into the files and remove the bad file or whatever needed to be done. Anyways...

Like: The Storyline was alright in some parts, the new graphics brought some life into the game.

The character specific abilities and passive buffs, I love those and wish they were in DA:O

I liked how kirkwall was so big as well, makes Denerim look like a fishing village.

I also liked how there were multiple companion quests instead of just one

.Hate: The new combat, WTF were you guys thinking when you made it so when you poke someone with a blade they explode into a billion pieces, that is my biggest complaint. DA:O's combat was much, much better and more realistic.

I hate how you're only restricted to Kirkwall and the outskirts of it.  That ruined a part of the game I enjoyed in DA:O (Being able to see the geography over a large area)

I also hate how you can't talk to your companions anywhere you want to like in DA:O, that was a big part of what killed Awakening for me, and it killed a bit of this game too.

I also hated with a passion the new elf design, WHAT DID YOU DO TO THEM!??!  They were awesome before, but now they look like something taken out of my kindergarten fairytale book, comon bioware -_-.  And what's with the accent...

The darkspawn look pathetic now as well, I liked the old design, the new design is just.. bleh..

The abilities you can get are really restricted now, sure you added a few things but you took away more things than you added.

The ending, come on bioware. You nailed the ending of origins (almost), with being able to talk to people and celebrate after you kill the archdemon (before you go outside). I also like being able to see what happened after the game to your companions or other characters/cities within the game, with the pictures and saying that they want on to do stuff. Dragon age 2 lacked the talking and the aftermath stuff.
I hate the endings of Awakening and DA2 where you just kill the final boss and walk off, especially how there was just credits pretty much afterwards on this game.

I have many more comments and such, but I doubt anyone who works for bioware reads this thread anyways :-P

In all, I'm really just wanted 2013 to come fast (I bet DA3 will come 2013) to see what happens next.

I finished my first playthrough a few days ago and have had some time to think over what I want to say, so here goes.

Story:

Pros:  I'll start by saying that I really appreciate that BioWare was trying to tell a more complex, political story.  So many fantasty games are "defeat the bad guys and save the world from evil" (including Origins!), and that's fine, but it was refreshing to see something different being done in this genre.  Once I realized that most the side quests had some relevence to the main plot, I enjoyed the slow pace at which everything unfurled and began to create a larger picture.  Act II felt pretty epic.

Cons:  While I liked where everything was going once I realized where it was going... well, in Act I I didn't have any sense of that.  In hindsight I saw the connections, but at the time Act I felt like a bunch of unrelated side-quests, and it would've been nice to get a little more meat beforehand, or perhaps some sense of where the story would eventually lead to keep from feeling like there was a lack of direction.

Act III was also something of a disappointment.  I was a known apostate, romanced Anders, and openly sided with the mages.  Obviously, very pro-mage.  So why did everyone think I was working for the templars?  Why did the mage-sympathizers attack me?  Why did I have to do Meredith's dirty work at all?  Not to mention by this point it seemed like the story really, really wanted to beat me over the head with "mages = demons".  By the end of the game I felt like a fool for having ever supported them, despite being one.  There was a lot of talk about how mages were being oppressed, but anytime you meet one... oh what a surprise, *another* blood mage!  All of these things really soured the last act for me.  And of course, the non-ending... a game should leave room for an expansion but still feel like a complete experience.  This one felt like there was another act that simply got chopped off.

Companions:

Pros:
I really enjoyed all of the companions.  The party banter was great (I loved that sometimes it would turn into a group discussion), and the friendship/rivalry system was nice because it allowed me to roleplay my character without having to worry about driving off angry party members (that would be you, Fenris).  I liked that it felt like they were living their own lives as time progressed, not just spending all of their time following me around.  Also, having a family was pretty cool!  Shame about losing them all... though at least I'll always have my faithful mabari Wobbles.  Oh, and all of the love interests are bisexual!  I never thought I'd see that in a game; thank you.

Cons:
It would've been nice to be able to get to know the characters a little better.  I don't feel like there needs to be a conversation option every time I click on a companion, but in Act I I felt like I had a bunch of strangers hanging out with me.  Being able to chat and learn a bit about them when they first joined would've been nice.  For this same reason, the romance felt flat.  The romances in Origins were done excellently, but here... there was just no sense of connection.  Also by Act III all of the companion side quests felt like they bogged down the pace of the plot (in general I liked being involved in their lives, just at that point it felt like too much).  Also, more than one healer would've been nice... I had Anders in my party the whole time, but would like to bring someone else on my second playthrough.

Combat/Gameplay/Other:

Pros:
The pace of combat was great; I enjoyed the quickness and energy of the encounters.  The skill trees were also a huge improvement -- having passives and upgrades kept my action bar from feeling bloated (an issue as a mage in DA:O), and all of my spells felt useful.  I also liked that each companion had their own talent tree; it made them all play differently.  As far as difficulty, I played on normal and the tuning felt just right.  Also, unlike some I didn't have an issue with much of the game being set in Kirkwall... it seemed like the story was about the city as much as it was about Hawke and by the end of the game it felt like an old friend.

Cons:
There didn't always need to be one of two (or three!) waves of additional nubs to kill for every fight.  That made it fun for some fights, but I don't think there was ever an encounter where there *wasn't* at least one additional wave... eventually it got tedious.  Also, while I didn't have issue with the reuse of Kirkwall... it would've been nice to have more than one cave.  You know... that one cave, where every criminal or creature or person you seek can be found.  It's a wonder anyone even hides in there anymore since apparently everyone knows about it and goes there.  Also I would've liked the options to change more of the gear on my companions.

Overall:

On the whole I liked the game.  It was a fun way to spend 30 hours or so, and I'll buy the expansion that's bound to be released.  Was it as good as DA:O?  Well, no.  It had a lot of good ideas, but some glaring flaws, and at the end felt incomplete.  I hope future BioWare games will live up to their legacy of quality in a way that this one just *didn't quite* do.

Excellent city adventure in this kind of setting.. that's one thing I missed about Origins; there wasn't much of a D&D feel to the cities, not much to do there...
but with DA2 you really did a great job creating the feel of a city as it would be in that kind of setting.. choices were tricky as; you play nice with one faction you get attacked by an opposing one... lol I loved that about this game!

The story is really a very dark one, I really enjoy dark stories so you made my day in that sense..

The only thing I missed a little was the interaction of my companions, but obviously this is a different game with a different emphasis on different things and was not meant to be the same as DA:O... still, I miss that aspect of Origins a bit...

Overall, I think you did an incredible job with the city adventure in so many ways; the combat, quest choices, companions are very individual and unique (Merrill is so cute it almost hurts to interact with her..), although I think there's much more to her character than meets the eye or is apparent on the surface.. and it was great to see Anders back again.. didn't think he'd play such a major role in the story, the ending was a jaw-dropper..

I would say that DA2 is an average game.  I rate DAO as an excellent game.

DA2 is too short.  I want a game that will take longer than 30 hours to complete.  I also can't initiate dialog with the other characters when I want.  Granted when I was able to have a dialog, it was well written.. I just would have enjoyed more.

I loved Anders in awakenings... and maybe the writers did too good of a job then but I totally HATED what happened to him in DA2.

All of my love interests have dark emotional baggage.  Fenris walks out on you the first night and then 3 years later it's "oops, do you forgive me".  Anders slowly slips away and yet you get NO dialog to ask if you can help, is he OK etc.  I can happily take a blood mage to my bed or shack up with the pirate who lied, and caused many deaths because she stole a relic form the qunari.  The two most stable people are not romanceable.  I was ready to turn the whole lot in and keep Zevhran.  Sebastian has a great accent and I would listen to him all day, except he took a vow of chastity.

The necromancer kills your mom, you find notes from someone who has giving him information on how to be a necromancer, but you get no chance to follow up.  There is also no option that I can see to succeed at saving her.

The maps are recycled.  Yes you can be clever and try to have me enter from a different perspective but I can still see it is the same map.  Also very annoying when all the rooms appear on the mini map, even though they are not accessable by that blank stone or unopenable door.

I miss additional dialog options if you got if you maxed out your different skills.  (there are no skills in DA2)  I liked to be able to persuade or intimidate.

This game felt like a "filler" game to prepare for the next sequel.  It felt unfinished at the end and the end is buggy, showing that Anders never left my side, even after I killed him.

As soon as I learned that the relic was sold to a woman.. I knew immediately that Meredith had bought it.  Did anyone else think it was obvious as well?

My overall opinion is that Dragon Age II is a great game. Played through it once as a male warrior on the 360.

Likes
- The improved graphics was a great advancement; made interacting with people and environs all the more enjoyable. I was able to actually be proud at how my character looked.
- Having the preset character design was a great starting point for character creation.
- Segments were Varric embelishes Hawkes adventures, getting to play through them as a beast and then play the real events. Very cool.
- Combat in every way is an improvement. The animations are far better. I actually took the time to bother with potions and bombs in this game as they are no longer confusing and seem beneficial (combustion granade kicks ass). The combat is so much more exciting and fast and it no longer looks like the combatants are attacking on turn-based terms. The revamped class diversity makes having rogues in your party valuable assets in combat and not just lockpicking tools(Isabella is an "Elite rank" killer). Archers are fantastic in this game as they were for the most part nonexistent in DA:O. And the puase and play tactics are still there; these are made all the better via cross class combos, a brilliant idea. The improved range of skill tree options made warriors and rogues more diverse and made the combat more fun.
- The Charaters were memorable and party banter is always enjoyable.
- The scope of the available missions was impressive as most felt well thought out.
- Party member missions and party bases
-The story of Acts I & II. I enjoyed anything that had to do with the Qunari.
- The races felt very disticnt with their new looks. Elves feel more unique as they no longer sound like they are from suburban America. The Orzammar Dwarves appear to have different eyes then the surface dwarves. And the Qunari now look like a race that would have an Exhalted March declared on.
-Fully voiced Hawke
-The magic of save imports. This makes the world trully feel alive and that past actions have impact.

Dislikes
-The biggest problem for me was that the text of every thing was far too small and the colour of it made the job of reading harder
-lack of environments. Not very displeased with that though.
- Act III story was a little short on content
- Boss Battle Difficulty. in DA II the Arishok was hard and so was the highdragon and the Rock Wraith, but I enjoyed the challenge of these battles. But when the time came to fight Orsino and Meridith they were easy by comparison, much too easy for a final boss battle.
- Probably my second biggest dislike was the lack of free companion interaction.
- Having to press on a chest to buy goods instead of the merchant. WHY?
- I enjoyed having my companions have their own unique armor, but I hated the fact that their weapons did not level up too. What is the point of resricting armor but then having these cool weapons that you have to discard because they are far too weak. Isabella looks stupid with big bulky knives isted of her sleek daggers. Anders staff looked very cool and why would aveline not continue to keep using her husbands shield.
- Segments where Varric embelished the story were too few. I only encountered 2. 1 or 2 more would have been nice.
-The load times were very long. The small text was nearly unreadable thanks to the text blending in to the background so the usual informative tips that help the loading time pass was wasted.
- The game was buggy in parts. I could not complete at least two of my quests and there were graphical stutters in cutscenes from the start. Anders as vengence and Meridith gone mad, when their eyes were glowing I saw the balls of light on their checks instead of their eyes.
- For DA:O & DA:II : Why when I give my character a beard it gives them the shallowest checks possible. Less noticable in DA:II then in DA:O but why does this happen anyways?

Overall The Game was great and unlike the majority of people I believe it is equal to DA:O. I only hope that Bioware resolves Hawkes story in a full fledged sequel like Dragon Age III and not just resolve it in an expansion. PLEASE INCREASE FONT FOR NEXT GAME!

Finally finished the game and enjoyed it for the most part.. I have a few gripes but it's pretty much the repeat of what everyone else has been saying.

I don't feel the game has been "dumbed down" and I really think people who are claiming that are just latching on to buzz words.. but I do think the massive style shift to something more like Mass Effect was a mistake. I can see why they wanted it to be more character based and cinematic, but I think they could have just as easily achieved that, while still allowing you customise your character and choose the responses from a list like in DA:O. It didn't ruin the game, as some people claim, but it did feel like a completely unnecessary change and I can see why some have been alienated by that.

I also think the plot was too weak.. It got very interesting with the Qunari and the sympathisers and then again with the mages versus the templars.. I also really loved the parts that focused on the characters but there was too much fluff inbetween the good stuff and I actually ended up feeling pretty bored at certain parts.

Overall, it felt like more of an expansion or a spin-off game to me, rather than "Dragon Age 2" and I think calling it that is the biggest failing point.

THE GOOD

The new conversation system was very well done. Not just using Mass Effect's system but actually improved upon with the icons telling me what type of reply this is instead of just a good/neutral/evil. Also was nice to see that people would respond well to the sarcastic response too.

The skill trees were vastly improved over DAO. The "fluff" abilities were much fewer. In DAO I frequently would have to pick a skill or ability that I really didn't need just to get another one or because I had to spend a point. That didn't happen in DA2 as I found most abilities useful.

THE BAD

On the PC the new combat didn't work as well. Console users may enjoy the button mashing, but I liked the slower-paced tactical combat of DAO. Now, my tactics were start combat, pause, issue commands, unpause, watch a few secs, repeat. It really broke up the flow of combat with all the pausing I had to do.

Secondly, I didn't like how I couldn't give my companions any armor. My 1st playthrough was with a rogue so all that nice mage gear got vendored even though the other mages in my group could of gained benefits from them.

Conversing with companions was awkward at best and a headache at worst. In DAO if I wanted to talk to Morrigan, I talked to Morrigan, I didn't have to keep dropping by her place to talk to her there and only there.

THE UGLY

The story, for a Bioware game, was very weak. There was no overall theme, just a bunch of little subplots mashed together. It didn't have the epic feel of a single player RPG, I'm just .. there... doing.. things... cuz there is nothing better to do.

Having the game all take place in the same area was a giant leap backward from DAO. After the demo, I thought I'd go to Kirkwall, do Something, then leave and go Elswhere then learn of the Big Baddie, then go Someplace Else to fight The Big Baddie. Instead I get the same maps recycled many many MANY times for the numerous little quests that seem to not fit in any overall theme.

Lack of Choices was really disappointing. Bioware games are known for giving me choices and the consequences that go with them. Yet I can't save Trask, Carver or Bethany. I can't stop the Chantry from being nuked into rubble. They just happen and there is nothing I can do about it. I should of been given SOME option to stop or help Anders from blowing up the Chantry as an example.

DA2 didn't have the development time of DAO and it shows.

I've only played all the way through to the end once so far, but I think the replayablility of this game won't be as extensive as it was in Origins for the simple reason that there are a lot less options for creating your character... I'm still playing Origins after all this time and there are still things I want to explore, but the new game only having basically 3 choices; Mage, Rogue or Warrior without a real history behind the characters and unique starting points will limit the replay value, however I have not explored everything by any means so time will tell on that score... Im interested to see how much there is though...

this game was pretty awesome. i love mass effect and da2 felt alot like mass effect (with the conversation system). i dont care much for the companions in da2, i felt closer to the ones from the first. i also dont like how you cant just walk up to ur party members and have a convo wit them (like u were able to in the first game) combat system is defenitally better. (mage is best =P) i dont rele understand y the quinari darkspawn and the elfs look so different in this game, but all around this game gets a 9 outta 10 from me
