Merrill never hit my radar prior to the game release, and she's done nothing but annoy me in the game. I think when I play "good" she'll become more interesting as I try to open her up, but my evil character has no choice but to shut her down and berate her constantly. Her inability to take advice irks me personally, as well.
Anders takes the award for falling into least favor, surprisingly, because I loved him in Awakening. I think part of the blame goes to the new VA for him, and also because Justice is warping his personality. It's all TEMPLARS I HATE THEM WE HAVE TO KILL THEM ALL! His romance is very sweet, and I like to see him try to persuade my Hawke away from Fenris because he himself is more "open minded".
Fenris was the one I was most looking forward to, and while I think his backstory is kind of so-so, his dialogue is excellent and I like his quest. He is at odds with Anders so it's hard to keep them both in the party and do quests without constantly pissing one off every time you make a decision.
Isabella I didn't get because I glitched on the Chantry door, so I just moved on and will get her for the next quest.
Varric, I levelled him up wrong so I never use him in my party, but he has probably the most entertaining dialogue.

But... Varric and Isabela. Those two are the show stealers.

Hawke: "Varric, you mind taking care of this?"
Varric: "Way ahead of ya..." -kills a boss with one shot- "Bianca says the treasure is all ours."
So it definitely has to be Varric, granted I am having a blast with everyone (except Fenris who harshes my vibe so I leave him in his Brood Base)
I also agree with Rykoth that Varric and Isabela as a team are kinda hogging the stage because dam they are funny.

And Merrill. I was originally completely disinterested in her, and, as a Tali fan, a little annoyed that people kept comparing her to everyone's favorite Quarian. But she has completely grown on me, and I can definitely see some Tali similarities. I just wished she looked a little older because seeing Hawke flirt with her still kind of creeps me out.

Argh! Now I'm actually considering playing a mage just so I can have Carver on my team! I really like the idea of the Garrett/Carver sibling rivalry, especially since in this scenario, magic gave Garrett and Bethany a bond that superseded the one twins usually share. The fact that magic is such a thorny family issue between the brothers mirrors the larger plot really well.Deviana wrote...
Carver certainly grew on me. I liked how he stands up for my mageHawke to Fenris, even though he complains about being overshadowed by his older sister constantly. Also it was very unexpected to hear him bickering with Varric only to find out that they became good friends. Overall I'm surprised that despite all the worry I find myself enjoying all of the characters. Bioware are sneaky like that.

Merrill is about as annoying as I feared; Isabela I can't take seriously until she puts on some pants. Aveline is way too Lawful Good for my Hawke. Carver is a whiny little emo brat who needs a kick in the head.
Anders is the real disappointment for me. I liked him so much in Awakening, but between the monomaniacal Chantry hate, the surgical removal of his sense of humor, and the change in voice acting, all I can think is, "Who are you and where are you hiding the real Anders?"

it surprised me how much i like aveline. i totally cracked up at her annoyed "orlesians....*sigh*" near the end, and she's got a nice personality, which i didn't expect.what^^ how?try to persuade my Hawke away from Fenris because he himself is more "open minded".
First I flirted with Anders, then I flirted with Fenris and ended up with him in the sack towards the end of act 2. I kind of gave up on Anders because I kept pissing him off in conversations and would never take his side in the chantry/mage debate, since I'm evil and want to screw over everyone. When doing Anders personal quest where he wants you to hunt up some items, and you accept to do it he says "I knew you would say yes! Even though..." And you say "What?" He plays it off. Later on, when you enter the sewers, this happens:
Anders (Something like this): I can't believe that Fenris. He's always out to get me because I'm a mage. Why would you be interested in him?
Evil mHawke: Chose: I don't want to talk about this.
Anders: He's let ONE bad experience color his entire life! Surely you want someone more open minded.
That's really sweet, he is in love with my character, and I just realized that my casual flirting is going to have some serious consequences and someone's going to get hurt.
But I'm playing evil. What did I expect?

This is it exactly. Pun intended, the Magic of Anders from Awakening is missing in DA2.

Haha, that's great! Have your Anders and Fenris also had any pointed conversations about Hawke? In DAO, Zevran and Morrigan have nice bit of dialogue about the Warden if he's messing around with both of them. The only thing that would've made it better would've been the Warden responding, "I'M RIGHT HERE," after their little back and forth.Jaws_Victim wrote...

I try to keep people in line with my thinking in my party, so I don't just make them angry. I haven't seen any dialogue with each other, Anders so far has been the only one bad mouthing Fenris.

I thought I'd like Varric, but I really hate him. I guess I'm just not fond of jerks in general. I know the devs were trying to develop another Zevran-ish character, but Zev was only a sarcastic ass when someone poked him in a place he didn't want or hit a little too close to home. Varric's permanent home became the inn when he jabbed Fenris and Aveline for no particular reason.
And Anders... Add me in to the people who loved him in Awakening, but hate that he lost his humor and his VA. Greg Ellis did a fantastic job with him, so I'm utterly baffled about why he's no longer voicing Anders. Even weirder, because he's listed as doing additional voices in DA2 on IMDB. It just irritates me to no end that his humor vanished with Justice. My sarcasti-pragmatic-sorta-do-gooder FemHawke tried to joke around with him and ended up a bitter rival, go figure.

Only character I'm not to fond of is Merrill. I mean I thought I would love her, especially after seeing that live feet of her. But after actually playing with her for awhile she gets annoying. All the frolic, butterflies and everything talk kinda makes me queasy. She's too sweet and innocent for my tastes.

Merrill: Since this is my mostly-paragon Hawke playthrough, I'm doing the Merrill romance option. She is cuter than a basketful of kittens. She is just so adorable. ... boy, do I hope that her blood magic doesn't end in some horrid tragedy where I end up having to cut her head off to save her or whatnot.
Varric: Varric is awesome. Varric is the ****. Varric's got my back and I've got his. I haven't had this much fun with a street-smart partner since I was a Dwarven Commoner Origin and Leske was with me. Only unlike Leske, Varric isn't a backstabbing ****.
Anders: I miss the Anders of Awakenings, but I don't hate this one; I do feel very sorry for him. He's still a genuinely decent guy, just one in a lot of pain. And speaking of...
Fenris: About 1/10th of the time he opens his mouth, something worthy of respect comes out. The rest of the time, I want to punch him in his face. I haven't heard anybody emo on the past harder or longer or whinier since Sasuke Uchiha. Hey, Fenris, yes, your life was awful and you have every reason to have scars. But you wallow in them. Anders has a goddamn demon stuck in his head and is still trying to be nice and helpful to strangers, running a free clinic and anything. You sit all day in your house of brooditude (which you stole, btw) and... do what, exactly? You don't even help out in the alienage. *sighs* You're a useful meat shield, you self-centered ******, which is the only reason you've ever seen any time in the party rotation... but christ, there's a reason I use you the least, and it ain't because I'm going 2-h warrior as well.
Aveline: She's Lawful Good in an environment totally unsupporting of such, and I respect that. I even like talking to her, most of the time. But there's a reason I'm the Champion of Kirkwall and not her; she's got this tendency to, when up against something that she knows has no ideal solution, to fall back on the narrow letter of the law and deliberately not let herself look any further. Because she has no ability to make non-black-and-white choices... and lady, you live in Dragon Age, the land of the mixed blessing and the gray area of gray areas. So, yeah, she survives only by deliberately gimping her imagination, which makes her a little hard to work with sometimes. Still, she's a good person. Just... don't tell her everything you do.

Anders.... I don't know. I was disappointed because I wanted to go Rival Romance on that boy's ass but instead every flirty dialogue results in "LOLZ! NM! FRIENDSHIP POINTS!"
Seriously. I wish there was a way to have flirty dialogue + rivalry points.
