To answer your second question, no, you can only use staves (which function as swords/clubs/whatever at close range, using your magic stat for damage still.
For the first question, there is a list of nice warrior specific gear here: http://segmentnext.c...ocation-guide/. However, as a mage, you'll still end up with the mage's set for the Champion Armor Set, arguably the best set of armor in the game, so that'll be useless to you with less than 31 willpower.

I see, so it's better to just go with a pure mage build then so you have more willpower and use mage gear.

That's basically the way it seems. With your sustainables on for your pure mage, it's almost like having armor on anyway.

Its both funny and sad that a archer with a good bow can out AOE a mage
Perhaps its funny when you live misinformed. Mages have a variety of crowd control and AOE damage spells. Firestorm and fireball alone are extremely powerful while a ranged character has what? Explosive arrow that hits maybe three enemies? Other than Hail of Arrows they don't have much

Funny thing is.. mages need to complain to get THERE jobs back.. every
class has massive AOE attacks... stuns.. and what have you.. and many
are more effective then the mage versions.. or are infact 2 spells.
Their job back? DAO has Mages as the healers which is the only class that does so along with revive. All classes had stuns. Warriors had AOE with Two hander as did rogues with a bow. Did you even play the eariler games?

This is entirely self-policed, and since there is no multiplayer component, you're not breaking any sort of rules. This is just a temporary "fix" until someone gets a proper mod going.
Fun Fact: non-staff weapons have a faster "cast" than staves, ironically enough. Even two-handers' cast is a swift forward slash that looks awesome when casting offensive magic.

Started a brand new mage a few minutes ago, and as a level 5 with no pre-order or paid DLC items, he is an ungodly awesome beast.
Disclaimers:
-HARD MODE (Nightmare will be fun once I get to it, though)
-using Parthalan staff w/flame rune given from free content book
-used Maker's Sigh pot from Black Emporium to at least get rid of the useless Mind Blast ability
-Rock Armor, Arcane Shield, Heroic Aura, Fireball, Pyromancer
-70% Staff Melee damage, 20% Fireball damage, 10% Staff Ranged damage
-running in basic cloth and standing toe-to-toe with even-level hordes
-building pure CON > STR to wear Blood Dragon Armor; 19CON / 15STR so far
-obviously damage isn't set to "rock 'n roll!" just yet, as being able to survive melee is a priority
Parthalan is damn good in Act 1 especially considering it has no MAG requirement, and meshes well with the abundant +Fire Damage gear and Pyromancer to make your melee attacks -actually- worth (more than just) a damn. I assume Blood Dragon will suffice w/ 19 CON/STR long enough for me to pump MAG up to respectable numbers, and after that I'll play it by ear.
Update: after the year-lapse, I went straight to Aveline and picked her up, then went immediately to Sundermount to grab Merrill. There, this character traded hits with a Revenant and was doing great.
Hows it working for ya now? Also what specializations are you going for?

My tip would be:
Start playing it on lvl 10.
Go to Black Emporium and buy respec and staff,
youll get on 19 str, 19 con, 25 magic,
which lets you use that staff and full Blood Dragon armor

You really don't need armor for mages in this game, but to each his own I supposeStalky24 wrote...
I have finished game with this type of build on hard, playing it very casually, not controlling other members (and leveling them via auto-level up) and I quite enjoyed it.

Merrill/Anders. I prefer Merrill. Anders always dies fast and I always have enough money for all the potions I could ever need, so healing isn't really a problem for me.Jyaan wrote...
Anyone have suggestions for ideal party members for this build?
Fenris for damage
and a rogue. Varrick or Isabela. I like to mix it up between them.

playing on act 2 now, and found a hammer that i believe could be used by a mage i havent tired it out yet, but i found it at the wounded coast on a merchant named magus tavarin hall. Its called Void hammer and it's stats are 28dm 6%crit 5%attspeed 3+phys dm and only requires 33 str,and nothing else. not sure if this is a bug or something on the xbox but could possibly be a way to get your mage useing something else besides a staff if thats what you want
Interesting, though I hope you found it on either a Rogue or Mage, because I think if you look at a one-hander / two-hander on a Warrior, it doesn't show the additonal "Weapon and Shield" / "Two-Handed" skill requirement.
However, if it indeed does not have those talent requirements, then that could arguably be one of the best non-hacked Mage weapons in the game because non-staff weapons, as I mentioned earlier, have REALLY fast "cast" animations (simple slash), nevermind the fact it'd be a great alternative to staves for "Spellsword" Mages.

This is a great thread, thanks to everyone contributing. I'm currently trying out something similar. Here are my stats and how it's working out so far

Magic - 26 - Magic Resistance 10%
Cunning - 12 - Crit Damage 52%
Willpower -13 - Mana 189
Consitution - 20 - Health - 188
Damage - 41 DPS - 30
Attack - 67% - 132

Armour - 80% - 249
Equipment
Staff of Parthalan
Blood dragon helmet
Blood Dragon Armour
Boots of tremendous weight
All with +4 armour runes
Gauntlets of the Nug
Talents
Arcane Sheild - Defense 20%
Rock Armour - Armour 25%
Unshakable - Fortitude 100
Fist of the maker

I plan on getting Galvanism to increase Rock Armour and my lightning/stone fist spells. Then boosting Con + Blood magic
So far i'm blasting through the game on hard, can do good damage from distance and up close with staff and spells, can also take a lot of hits, just need mana! Party i have Carver specced as a Vanguard 2H damage and Aveline as a straight up tank. Varric as support archer.
Let me know what you think, hope this helps give people some idea's

You've probably already thought about this, but at some point, you're going to be hurting for some kind of reliable, unlimited healing. Considering all the physical damage you have in your party right now, you could stand to drop one of the non-Rogue members and replace them with Anders, or have yourself go deep Spiritual Healer, because if you're going to give yourself healing capabilities, you almost have to go into it, and if you're going to go into it at all, you might as well grab one of the single greatest passives in the game: Vitality, which gives you +10 CON that you don't need to spare attribute points for, and a MASSIVE HP regen bonus (+100) that is active even outside of Healing Aura.

My question is, I've already chosen Blood Mage as my 2nd specialization (simply for the passive health bonus), and I'm considering using the sustained Blood Magic skill - will my healing aura continue to regenerate my health? I recognize potions and Heal are useless, but generally my existing regeneration is more than enough to stay out of harm's way.
Any Healing Aura users out there using Blood Magic concurrently?

Yeah I plan on using Anders but I don't have him yet
Vitality is brilliant, but it's a lot of points (6) to put in for it as I wouldnt use the other 5? Blood mage + pumping con I think might be best. Need damage output tho as my magic is not very high
Half of me just wants to re-start and go all out 2h Vanguard as when I play as Carver it's very satisfying

Quick question for these builds - Does the Health Regen from an upgraded Death Siphon work through Blood Magic? Obviously the Mana regen is worthless, just curious if this is a viable way of offsetting the health loss from casting.
No, you have to use grave robber while blood magic is active.
