I haven't done the Fenris romance but I thought Fenris indicates later that nothing has happened since that night and other companions reference him breaking up with Hawke.

It's not as simple. Just like with Isa, he walks out for his own reasons, but there is an idication that feelings linger, as referenced by the companions. Merril outright comments that he's in love and watching Hawke when she turns away, even after the walking out part.  Then he also rebuffs Isabella's flirts (flirts along and even has a casual relationship with her if not in romance, and Isa isn't either), and then there is banter between him and Anders where speaks that walking away was hardest thing he ever done. His apology in act 3 has him admitting that the night was meaningful to him and he wished he apologized sooner, and told Hawke of his feelings.

That, um, sounds like he dumps Hawke. If walking out on Hawke in Act 2 wasn't him breaking off the relationship, why does he talk about how hard it was to do? Why would he apologize three years later?

I'm curious what companions say on Isabella's front after she walks away, though. She looked very torn up about leaving in the cutscene in act II. Does anyone pick up on her inner conflict?

Varric's conversation in Act 2 warns about her backstabbing Hawke. If you continue to romance her in Act 3, Merrill comments on it. I think that's it.

I think I've read numerous times that Anders and Merril are the only ones who can move in.

I get the impression that both Isa and Fenris need more time/space to work through their inner demons before they commit to actual relationship, let alone share the living arrangements, whereas Anders and Merril are more free and open with their affection.

Or maybe mages are just more clingy LOL! Seriously, poor Merill is in an alienage and all Anders has is a clinic. Fernis has whole mansion and Isabela prefers lowtown. O also think she likes being close to the sea.

Yes but if you do give her up to the Qunari I don't think she comes back to you does she? I've never explored this as I've needed her for her quest in Act 3 for the Ambrosia. Which you can only get by doing her quest.

She doesn't come back as far as I know(never actually followed through with that option since I needed her in party for gameplay reasons) but apparently she escapes the Qunari before the ship even reaches Par Vollen/Seheron/wherever and to add insult to injury, she escapes with the Tome.

I've never followed through with it either due to the fact that I needed her in Act 3 for the Ambrosia which is the only way for which you cna get it. I think it's funny that she gets away from the Qunari with the book as well. The only thing is giving her up to the Qun you don't get to kick the Arishocks arse who I think is an arogant SOB anyway.

He does break it off, the whole blurb was to adress that it wasn't a meaningless break off aka one night stand with no emotions involved :).

I didn't mean to derail the topic into the other romance, I was just asking if there is a parallel, since Isa does the whole 'now, my curiocity is sated' line, and walks away saying 'it's just easier that way' even if she does look torn up about it if Hawke tries to persuade her. It just looked to me that she broke it off too.

I was under the impression of this being the case as well. And than when I seen
the posting someone made about Issy moving in I'm like how in the world do you make that there happen.<G>

Now why is it that the mages Anders, and  Merrill for example are so with affection? Merril to me is just to whiny and Anders is just to broody. The only decent mage was Bethany and she  either dies somewhere along the line or goes to the Chantry or Wardens. Anyone ever do a run through without having a mage in the party and with out being one themselves? Except for doing their quests that is?

Right. I was saying you don't get that sort of dynamic with Isabela, not that Fenris never returns to the player.

I never got a line about her curiosity being sated. I got, 'That was... *laughs* Thank you.' and 'It was fun, wasn't it? Well, you know, if you ever want to do it again...' Then the conversation about her not being interested in love.

That doesn't read to me as breaking off, but wanting a combination of casual sex and friendship.

Even after the Act 3 confession of feelings, she'll attempt to sleep with Zevran and the amulet conversation has Hawke saying she'd like some lust right then.

I'm guessing there's more difference on rivalry/friendship path maybe? Or depending on dialog choices.

This was where I was basing my parallel on:
(act II Isa)

Isabela tells Male Hawke that it was just rutting. She tells Female Hawke that it was fun.

I find it unlikely that Isabela would sleep with Hawke, then engage in a purely platonic relationship for three years, and then casually flirt and sleep with her after returning from a trip. My assumption has always been that Hawke and Isabela were involved from Act 2 to Act 3 but that Isabela didn't allow things to get too serious.

If you give Isabella to the Qunari, she will not return..So bye bye Ambrosia. In Act 3 she does fall in love with Hawke if romanced. As for the "look " on her face before going with the Qunari, I think it's, she gambled with her feelings for Hawke and lost look, so to speak. And last but not least, NO she cannot move into Hawkes estate, only Merrill and Anders can.

Yes. One of the lines when Hawke returns to the estate and finds Isabela there is "Maker's Breath, woman! You're insatiable!" which is only available via romance. The alternate line is "Is something the matter?"

The 'insatiable' line makes little sense if they only tapped the midnight still only once. In addition, the 'why are you still here?' banter between Sebastian and Isabela indicates that Hawke and Isabela forge the moaning statue quite regularly.

For the record, the rivalry romance for Isabela was downright painful. I was only doing it because before they fixed the Thumbs Up glitch, the alternative was to not recruit her at all. Didn't enjoy a moment of that. Not only did I have to metagame and do things I'd never actually have Hawke doing, but he and Isabela argued constantly. He was more like an angry, disapproving father than anything else, and she seemed to kind of hate his guts. I'm not even sure how that was supposed to qualify as a romance of any kind...

Though, to be fair, I never completed that game, so I have no idea if anything changes during the final scene at the Gallows... That playthrough sucked.

Oh, and I want to just say that after reading this post, it's great to see another example of the writers making men seem like scum.  You know, "rutting" vs. "fun."  Great to see that they're consistent in their portrayal of lesbian encounters being more enjoyable for women than straight sex.  Had to say it...

I enjoyed the rivalmance. Then again, it was perfectly in character for the type of PC I usually play. My Hawke only yelled at Isabela once after the Fade.

Obviously, if you're doing things you'd never do otherwise, you're unlikely to enjoy the experience.

I am unsure how this shows men are scum.

Either way, Isabela continues to have a relationship with Hawke and brags about his or her sexual prowess. I read the difference as Isabela being a softer-touch with Lady Hawke. She probably sleeps with fewer women and they're probably a bit more sensitive.

The actual quotes in question:

for Male Hawke:
"I should go. That was an... interesting diversion."
"Ha! We were using each other, sweet thing. I was curious about you, and now my curiosity is... sated."
"Love? We were rutting. It has nothing to do with love."

for FemHawke:
"That was... *Laughs* Thank you."
"It was fun, wasn't it? Well, you know, if you ever want to do it again..."
"Love's not for everyone. It's not for me. It's just... messy."

I don't really see any denigration occuring either way. Her tone is one of amusement and teasing, like it always is.

Alright... maybe I didn't actually need to say that. It's just a vibe I get from playing Bioware games and reading too many threads on this site. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions without even knowing what was actually said, and I apologize.

You only complete the romance with Isabela if you talk to her about love after you have sex with her.
If you start that conversation she opens up to you and you get to know her better.
Then she says that she has fallen for you, and wonders if you feel the same.

Right before the end battle, when you can chat with your companions, you kiss Isabela and then you have the romance achievment.
If you dont start to talk about love after the sex, she will still stay with you, but you wont get the achievment.

interesting. Before the final battle when I talked to merril she kissed me, then I talked to isabella and she kissed me too. Was I romancing both of them at once? I had romanced isabella before that and then merrill afterwards who later moved in with me.

It's a bug. Sleeping with Merrill is supposed to end any other relationship.

I don't think it's a bug. I think it's possible to have a romance with Isabela and Merrill at the same time, if you play your cards right.
Remember that there are two ways to romance Isabela. One "fling" version and one "love" version.

Im not very fond of romances in videgoames. I play them in Bioware games because they allways bring something to the story and that's all. I do not like a lot the romantic side of it and allways find it a little bit awkward. That's why I liked Isabella romance a lot and avoided to romance Merryl. You know I loved it for being light, down to earth and not too "whiny". But I see that most people hate it for the same reason .

Isabella does say she falls in love with you. But I didn't really feel like there was a lot of romance content. I only remember two party banter conversations about it and they were both from Merrill. One was about Merrill saying I think "Hawke likes you" and the other was Isabella saying "I'm just happy." If there were more I must have missed them, but I took Isabella almost everywhere I went. I did get the kiss and the achievement at the end though.

I'm not really that fond of Isabela's demeanor regarding flirting with everyone and sexing up all the men she finds, basically. I mean, the first thing she does, more or less, is inviting you for some 'company'.

So to the question, does she -actually- fall for hawke? Proper love? Or is she just the same tease all throughout the game and just have a little special fondness for Hawke?

Yes. You can get a Meaningful Dialog quest with her where she says that Hawke is one of the few people she genuinely likes and respects. She is even willing to have a 3 way relationship with Hawke and Merrill if you decide to marry Merrill. The epiphany moment is the end of act 2. She will always run off with the book but if her friendship is high enough, she will return and unless you really screw it up, she becomes a loyal lasting friend with benefits for the rest of the game. However do not expect any more bed scenes. The quota is one per character per game.

Harold

WHHHUUUTTT?  You're telling me I can get my pirate queen and naive blood magess at the same time?  Frak I should have been flirting with both of them!
