I am not to far into the game as of yet, not even close to getting enough gold to to deep roads quest. I have read that I need to talk with my companions in there home base when they are not in party but I have tried and there is no conversation. Is this just something that won't happen until a bit later, I actually just got Merill.

Check your journal frequently.
It will tell you when you can talk to your companions at home.
Finish other quests and then companion chats become availalble.

If they want to talk to you, they will tell you when they are in your party, usually is asking for help...
You get one normal dialog right after you recruit them, one after you finish their personal quest in each act and one at the start of every new Act, there are also a few hidden dialog at certain places.
