It seems both are Blood Mage-like, as in they can power their spells with their health:

Anyone wondered why BioWare went in that direction?
Imagine them both with a Blood Mage Hawke, haha.

Companion specs seem to be a combination of two specs.
Merril is Blood Mage + Keeper.
Anders is Spirit Healer + something else. That ability isn't explicitly blood magic, even though it is similar in effect. But he is explicitly not a blood mage.
I think Martyr is supposed to represent him pushing himself to the point of physical damage.

EDIT
Not far from punishing your body for power though.[smilie]http://social.bioware.com/include/fckeditor/editor/images/spacer.gif[/smilie]Taleroth wrote...

I really love Ander's spec. He offers the ability to become a devoted healer / support character, or a Super-charged glass canon. Always have him in my party.
